Jerry R. Cassell, age 78, of Richmond, VA, died April 1, 2002.

The son of the late Willis and Pearl Cassell, he was born in Cass.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps 8th Air Force, serving in World War II. Later, he retired from the appliance business. He was Past Commander of American Legion Post 244, Glenn Allen, Virginia and American Ex-POWs, Denny Landrum Chapter, in Richmond, VA. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and a lifetime member of the VFW and the DAV. He was a dedicated volunteer at the McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital for many years.

Mr. Cassell is survived by his wife, Ellen; daughters, Diane Cassell, Gerilyn Alderman, of Buckhannon, and Martha Thompson; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Neal Cassell of Cass, and Grey Cassell of Brandywine; and three sisters, Gayle Mullenax of Arbovale, Beatrice Young of Virginia Beach, VA, and Charlotte Galford of Portsmouth, VA.

Roger Lee Snyder, 56, of Plainville, GA, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002.

Mr. Snyder, formerly of Buchanan and Lexington, VA, is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Lee and Ida May Snyder of Lexington, VA, and his grandparents, John Linaburg, Fred and Myrtle Linaburg Prost of Thorn Creek.

He had retired from the City of Lexington, VA, and was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lexington, VA

Surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Harold Cook of Buchanan, VA, and Janice and Sonny Barger of Plainville, GA; a brother Ronnie Snyder of Buchanan, VA; nieces and nephew, Mary Ellen Barger and husband, Steve, Chris Cook and wife, Marcee, Amy Ferguson and husband, Todd and Laura Cook; great-niece, Kaitlyn Barger; and two great- nephews, Caleb Peck and Joshua Ferguson; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 5, at 1 p.m. in the Springwood Baptist Church, Buchanan, VA, with Rev. Mike Woody officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Dennis Ralph Band, 50, of Riverton, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, a his residence.

Mr. Bland was born May 10, 1951, in Riverton and was a son of the late Jack Bland and Madeline Sponaugle Bland. He worked at Allegheny Wood in Riverton as a lumber stacker.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Kay Bland; one daughter, Elizabeth Kay Bland of Riverton; one sister, Debbie Burns of Riverton; one brother, Bobby Jack Bland of Riverton; one half-brother, Wayne Bland of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

Pastor Rebecca Bennett conducted the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial followed in the Burns Cemetery in Riverton.

Walter Lahman Eye, 77, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

A son of the late George A. and Hannah Sharader Eye, he was born Sept. 8, 1924, in Moyers.

Mr. Eye graduated from Franklin High School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Madison College, now James Madison University. He taught at Broadway High School and eventually became the first guidance counselor at the school. He retired in 1985.

Mr. Eye was an avid bowler and very active in the Association of Retired Teachers. His hobby was tracking family history. Mr. Eye served in the United States navy during World War II. He was a member of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a sister, Pauline Eye Simmons of Harrisonburg, VA; a niece, Fannie Propst of Moyers; a nephew, Mahlon Hoover of Newport News, VA; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 6, at 11 a.m. at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church with the Rev. Joseph Vought and Rev. Martha Simms officiating. Burial followed at 2 p.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery in Moyers.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Lindsey Harrisonburg, Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, VA.
