Paul Lambert, 72

Paul Lambert, 72 of Broadway, VA, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at his home.  He had been ill for the past year and a half. 

Mr. Lambert was born in Franklin and was a son of the late Arthur and Ida Propst Lambert. 

He served in the U.S. Army and was a meat cutter at various locatons for 22 years.  He then worked for Harrisonburg, Transit until retiring .  He was a member of Mount Zion Church of the Brethren. 

On Dec. 15, 1956, he married the former Jean Propst, who survives. 

Also surviving are three daughters, Jenny Propst and Sarah Lambert, both of Dayton, VA, and Lois Priest of Singers Glen, VA; a son Danny Lambert of Dayton, VA; four sisters, Arvella Pitsenbarger of Franklin, Sally Wright of Mount Crawford, VA, Lola Nelson of Indiana, and Phyllis Lambert of Franklin; two brothers, Billy Lambert of Staunton, VA, and William "Butch" Lambert of Franklin; and three grandchildren. 

The Rev. Bob Johnson conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Zion Church of the Brethren.  Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of the McMullen Funeral Homein Harrisonburg, VA. 

Raymond V. Eye

Raymond V. Eye, a native West Virginia retiree living in Sun City Center, FL, expired Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his home in the Kings Point Section of Sun City, FL.

His second wife, Jo Anne Eye, predeceased Mr. Eye in June, 2002. 

Mr. Eye was also predeceased by his first wife, Joane, and their daughter, Mary Deb, in 1956, and latter by their their son, Raymond Douglas Eye, in 1983 and their other daughter, Carolyn Denise Knapp in 1997. 

He is survived by brothers, Rollie Eye of Fairmont, and Billy Eye of Elkins and their spouses, grandchildren, Matt Knapp and family of Atlanta, GA, Amy Kotula and family of Charleston AFB, SC, and J.B. Knapp of Sarasota, FL; three great-grandchildren, Abby and Jack Knabb of Atlanta, GA, and Danny Kotula of Charleston AFB, SC.

He was a career employee of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and served as Colonel of the Law Enforcement Division of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  Later, he served as assistant director of the West Virginia DNR, a position he held until his retirement in March 1986.

During his tenure as "Chief Law Enforcement Officer," Colonel Eye held a voluminous number of regional and national posts in conservation  law enforcement and was recipient of many honors and awards.  He was appointed to other boards and commissions by other presidents.  He was honored as "Distinguished West Virginian" by Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr., and received numerous awards and commendations from Governor Underwood, Smith and Rockefeller. 

Mary Virginia Miller, 79

Mary Virginia Miller, 79, of Mount Sidney, VA, and wife of James M. Miller, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at her residence.  She had suffered with pulmonary fibrosis for the last 14 years. 

She was born on May 11, 1923, in Franklin, a daughter of the late Charles S. and Phoebe Jane Rexrode Simmons.

Prior to retirement, she was employed by the American Safety Razor Company with 23 years of service. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Fix; and two brothers, Alvin and Amos Simmons.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, whom she married on July 7, 1941, are five children and their spouses, Mary Catherine Crabbe and Irvin, Judy M. Buchanan and Charles, Dickie M. Miller and Sharon, Brenda R. Hevener and Gary, and Millie M. Kehrer and Ted.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; and a very special neighbor, Vera Layman; and several nieces and nephews.  

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

A funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Mark Westebee and the Rev. Dr. Robert D. Goshorn.  Burial followed in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

James H. McFarland, 75 

On his 76th birthday, former Herndon High School principal James H. McFarland received dozens of cards from alumni from the 1960s, expressing their appreciation for his work and describing how their high school education impacted their later successes. 

But, McFarland died March 12 of a pulmonary disease, four days before his 76th birthday and shortly before most of the cards arrived.

"It was bittersweet because he got a to read them," said his daughter, Susan De Filippo. 

McFarland, or "Mr. Mac" as he was known to his students, worked at Herndon High school for more than two decades, starting out as a physical education teacher in 1954 and later becoming the assistant princpal and principal of the school.

McFarland was born March 16, 1927, in Franklin, the oldest son and fourth of eight children for the late Daniel W. and Eula McFarland.  His family moved to Hagerstown, MD, when McFarland was a freshman in high school.  And after 17 months in the Navy, McFarland returned to his native West Virginia for college.  He initially attended Potomac State College in Keyser and transferred to Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, where he graduated in 1950.   A natural athlete, McFarland played football throughout college and was president of both his senior class and his fraternity. 

 He married Margaret Ann McFarland in 1950, and the couple moved to Staunton, VA, where he taught physical education and history in Fishersville, VA, while she taught home economics at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. 

McFarland was also an active member of Trinity Presbyterian church, where he served both as an elder and deacon.  Through Elder Hostel and other service organizations, he and his wife traveled across the country as well as to Hong Kong, Hawaii, China and Japan. 

McFarland was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel McFarland and Eula McFarland. 

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann McFarland of Ashburn, VA; son, Daniel Willard McFarland of Germantown, MD and wife, Tracy; daughters, Susan DiFilippo and husband, tom of Arlington, VA; Beth McFarland of Alexandria VA, and four grandchildren.  He is also survived by three sisters, Edna Ruth Fleming, Betty Lee Lippincott and Maryan Gresham. 

Funeral services were held March 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon, VA, with the Rev. Stephen Smith-Cobb officiating.  Interment was held March 31, at 2 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery.
