Mabel Gum Samples

Mabel Gum Samples, 87, of Monterey, VA, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. 

Mrs. Samples was born Feb. 3, 1916, at forks of the Water in Highland COunty, VA, and was a duaghter of the late Charles Doran and Minnie Catherine Simmons Gum. 

She was employed at Montvallee Motel and retired from Aileen, Inc. She was a past member of the Forks of the Water United Brethren Church. 

Her husband, William Leo Samples, preceded her in death. 

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Thelma and Bobby Nesselrodt, with who she lived for three years; three sisters, Matie Rexrode of Franklin, Helen Helmick of Mount Crawford, VA, and Dorothy Hedrick of Blue Grass VA; a brother June Gum of Springfield, VA; a grandson, Doug Nesselrodt, and his wife, Chris of Franklin; and two great-grandsons, Matt and Kenny Nesselrodt, both of Franklin. 

She was also preceded in death by a son, Carl Samples; and four brothers, William, Ray, French and Arch Gum. 

The Rev. Jerry Ginn conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  Burial was at the Monterey Cemetery in Monterey, VA.

 Alex D. Osborn, 71

Alex D. Osborn, quietly passed on March 25, 2003, in Lubbock, TX, at the age of 71 years. 

Mr. Osborn was born December 13, 1931, in Keyser to the late Alexander Bland Osborn and Helen Hiner Osborn. 

He graduated with a bachelor's degree from San Jose State and a master's degree from Marshall University in Huntington.  He moved to Lubbock, TX, from Korea in 1980.  He married Carolyn White on January 8, 1981, in Clovis, NM.

He was an education counselor for the Department of Defense and a social worker in West Virginia before retiring in 1983.  He was a  member of Life Gift, International Kidney Foundation, Internal Society of Poets, 700 club and the Trinity Church.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. 

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Osborn of Lubbock, TX; two sons, mark William Wells of Lubbock, TX, and Jonathan Earl Wells of Syracuse, NY; a daughter, Nita Annette Winkleblack of Lubbock, TX; four grandchildren, Sarah Renee Winkleblack of Santa Cruz, CA, Susan Marie Winkleblack, Rebekah Annette Winkleblack, and Reagan Patrick Wells, all of Lubbock, TX; and several cousins in Clarksburg.

Services were held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Trinity Church Chapel in Lubbock, TX, with Rev. David Savage officiating, and Rev. Paul Jantzen and Chaplain Walter White, assisting.  

Burial followed in O'Donnell Cemetery under the direction of White Funeral Home of Lubbock, TX. 

David J. Howdyshell, 72

David J. Howdyshell, 72, of Lanham, MD, and formerly of Rockingham County, died Sunday, March 23, 2003.  He had been in good health for the past two months. 

Mr. Howdyshell was born Aug. 29, 1930, in Briery Branch, VA, and was the son of the late Jesse L. and Ina Moyer Howdyshell. 

He lived in Bridgewater, VA, before moving to Maryland in 1957.  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean WAr and retired form the Washington DC, Fire Department in 1980, after 23 years of service.  He was a member of the Lanham United Methodist Church and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. 

Surviving are his wife, Mary Hedrick Howdyshell, whom he married March 28, 1953; three sons, David L. Howdyshell of Huntington, MD, Michael C. Howdyshell of Beltsville, MD, and Daniel E. Howdyshell of Prince Frederick, MD; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. 

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. 

His body was cremated and a graveside service will be held later at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine.

Ella F. Teter

Ella Frances Teter, 94, of Nella’s Nursing Home in Crystal Springs, and formerly of Onego, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at the nursing home where she had lived for the past seven years. 

Mrs. Teter was born April 24, 1908 in Onego and was a daughter of the late Columbus Long and Stella Burns Long.

Her husband, Zola Lee Teter, preceded her in death on June 28, 1969.

She is survived by two daughters, Velma Crites, Glen Burnie, MD, and Louann Smith, Edgewater, FL; four sons, Kenneth Ray Teter, Riverton, Bruce Teter, Petersburg, Jerry Teter, Bruceton Mills, and Ward Teter, Onego; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Also preceding her in death were two sons, Donnie Teter and Hansel Teter; one grandson, Jerry Reynolds Teter; three brothers, Jim Long, Homan Long and Glenn Long; and four sisters, Laura Long, Sylvia Mallow, Martha Davis and Flora White.

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral noon tuesday at SEneca United Methodist Church.  Burial was in the Teter Family Cemetery in Onego. Arrangements were by Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin 

Clarence E. Thorn, 78

Clarence Elwood Thorn, 78, of Mount Sidney, VA, died March 29, 2003, at the Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Thorn was born March 27, 1925, in Rough Run and was the son of the late Jesse Thorne and Virginia E. (Whetzel) Kelley and stepson of the late Raymond Kelley and Lula Thorne.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in Germany in the 630th Tank Destroyer Battalion.  He received the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and a World War II Victory Ribbon. 

Surviving are his wife, Ruby (Williams) Thorn, whom he married March 28, 1953; four daughters, Sharon Linell Roadcap and Patricia Kay Dean, both of Mount Sidney, VA, Linda Ann Beathe of Weyers Cave, VA, and Barbara Jane Hearn of Stuarts Draft, VA; one son, Ronald Elwood Thorn of Staunton, VA; seven sisters, Myrreah Simon of Petersburg, Virginia Bergdoll of Moorefield, Edna Mae Ours, Purgitsville, and Catherine Funk, Eula Jane Thorne and Eveline Lofton, all of Dorcas; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Wesely Thornberry conducted the funeral 2 p.m. at the Henry Funeral Home in Staunton, VA.  Burial followed at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens with graveside rites by Stuarts Draft VFW Post No. 9339.

John "Herb" Hoover, 83

John Herbert "Herb" Hoover, 83, of Harrisonburg, VA, and formerly of Doe Hill, VA, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.  

Mr. Hoover was born Aug. 13, 1919, in Doe Hill, VA, and was a osn of the late Cameron William and Bertie Snyder Hoover.

He was a member of the Highland Seventh-day Adventist church.  He was a farmer and a self-employed carpenter and mechanic.  

Survivors include his wife, Leona Irene Simmons Hoover; three daughters, Bettie Pryor of Vienna, VA, Ann Lotts of Mantua, OH, and Sue Burow of Springfield, VA; two brothers, Bill Hoover of Staunton, VA, and Ellis Hoover of Moyers; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 

Pastor Elmer Malcolm conducted a memorial service 2 p.m. Monday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  Burial was private.
