William Cosner, 74

William Kelvey Cosner, 74, of Petersburg passed away on Friday, March 27, 2009 at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, OH. 

Mr. Cosner was born at Mt. Storm on Sept. 25, 1934, the son of the late Wanda Cosner Hipp. 

He married Bertha Ann Heck Cosner who preceded him in death on May 2, 2005. 

Mr. Cosner was a painter and handyman.

Survivors are two daughters, Ronda Faye Cosner of Circleville Alicia Cosner of Petersburg; three sons, William Kelvey Cosner of Bartow, Jeffrey Ervin Cosner of  Kimbolton, OH, and  Kelvey William Cosner of Petersburg; three brothers, Clifford Schell of Bridgeport, Hobert Hipp of Mt, Storm, Dale Cosner of Detroit, MI; a special aunt, Opal Kuhn Lewis of Mt. Storm; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. 

Rev. Clifford Schell conducted a graveside service on Monday at Mt. Storm Cemetery, Mt. Storm. 

David M. Mallow

David M. Mallow, 88, of Upper Tract died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, West Virginia.

He was born September 2, 1920 at Kline and was the son of the late Otha A. Mallow and Agatha L. Dean Mallow.

He was a 1941 graduate of Franklin High School and attended Potomac State College. He was a farmer, custodian at Upper Tract Elementary School, member of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and a member of the Potomac Valley Mens' Choir.

On December 16, 1955, he married Vada R. Ratliff Mallow, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Gail Simmons and husband, Vernon of Monterey, VA, and Ginger Hartman and husband, Casey of Dayton, VA; three sons, D. Neal Mallow of Kirby, Brent Mallow and Leonard Mallow and wife, Donna, all of Upper Tract; two sisters, Lillian Sites of Keyser, Mary Ann Alt of Petersburg; and six grandchildren, Derek and Holli Simmons, Tara, Seara, Trina Mallow and Tiffany Hartman.

He was preceded in death by a daughter.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. at the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church at Kline with Rev. Rita Beeman and Pastor Otis "Buzz" Weatherholt officiating.  Burial will be at Kline Cemetery.

Harper K. Lambert,78

In accordance with his wishes, a public graveside service for Harper K. Lambert, 78, of Newark, OH was held March 27 at Eden Cemetery with Pastor Matt Van Winkle officiating.

Mr. Lambert passed away March 21, 2009 at the Selma Markowitz Hospice Care Center in Newark, OH.

He was born May 12, 1930 in Harman WV, to the late Otis and Gladys (Harper) Lambert.

He retired from White Westinghouse after 35 years as a storekeeper, then worked an additional four years at Buckeye Linen as a security guard. Harper served his county proudly from 1950-1953 during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the American Legion #764 Hanover, the National Riffle Association and the Long Run United Methodist Church.

His wife, Glenna Mae Lambert whom he married on September 3, 1954, survives.

He is also survived by his three daughters, Linda (Rick) Minot and Lori (James) McCollum, all  of Newark, OH, and Jeanette; four brothers, Keith (Harriett) Lambert of Lafayette, IN, Carl (Rita) Lambert of St Louisville, OH, Eddie (Sandra) Lambert of Seneca Rock, and Johnny (Wilma) Lambert of Stuart, WV; five sisters, Katie Smith of St Louisville, OH, Donna (Ed) Goins of Heath, OH, Betty Ruth (Leo) Spradling of Charleston, Ethel Gay Brinkley of Leonardtown, MD, and Mona (Johnny) Kisamore of Seneca Rock; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren,  and nieces and  nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Betty Ruth, brother, Earl Lambert, and sister, Irene Gray.

Jack Vance, 65 of Glen Burnie, MD, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at the Baltimore Washignton Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD.

Mr. Vance was born on Oct. 4, 1943 in Whitmer and was the son of the late Fred and Ruby Marie Harper Vance.

He was the owner and operator of J & L Vance Construction in Baltimore, MD, for 20 years.

His wife, Luxie Lavida Hitt VAnce, of 46 years survives in Glen Burnie, MD.

Also surviving are two daughters, Trina Vance Duck of Pasadena, MD, and Jackie Kirtz of Brooklyn, MD; three sons, Stine Vance, Jack Eric Vance and Jason Vance, all of Glen Burnie; eight sisters, Elaine Swick of Pasadena, MD, Margaret Ferris, Maxine Morris and Sue Ramsey, all of Glen Burnie, MD, Edith Good, Irene Stump, and Donna Herb, all of Upper Tract, and Jo Anne Plaugher of Franklin; six brothers, Richard Vance and Randy Vance, both of Eastern Shore, MD, Frederick "Mancie" Vance of Glen Burnie, Jerry Vance of Baltimore, MD, Tom Vance and Bob Vance, both of Upper Tract; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Gary and Roger Vance; and one sister, Billie Jo Stull.

Rev. Stanly Kile conducted funeral services on Sunday at the Basagic Funeral Home. Petersburg.  Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg. 

Halcy E. Vandevander, 90, of Kerens, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

She had been a resident of Nellas Nursing Home in Elkins for the past seven years.

Born December 18, 1918 in Pendleton County to the late Martha Mullenax, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a member of the Elk Mountain Presbyterian Church and worked all her life farming. She retired from the Hanover Shoe Company.

She and her husband Virgil were proud foster parents who were credited with raising over one hundred foster children during the course of their lives.

Her husband, Virgil Vandevander, preceded her in death. 

Surviving are three sons, Bob Vandevander and wife, Nanette of Elkins, Bill Vandevander and wife, Jo Ann of Charleston, and Randall Vandevander of Bartow; numerous grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four sons, Wayne, Tommy, David and Harlan “Pete” Vandevander, a grandson, Mark Vandevander, and a brother Harlan Mullenax.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale with Rev. Harold Mullenax officiating. Burial followed in the Vandevander Cemetery on Elk Mountain.
