Shirley Mae Champ

Shirley Mae Champ, 73, of Upper Tract passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Champ was born in Upper Tract on Aug. 31, 1936, the daughter of the late John and Lacey Kimble Ratcliff.

She worked as a baker and cook at Thompson's Restaurant in Franklin for 20 years.  She attended Upper Tract Schools and  was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Her husband, Coy Adam Champ, preceded her in death on March 28, 2005.

Surviving are three daughters, Teresa Sponaugle and husband, Jed, and Elaine Champ, both of Franklin, and Darlene Sue Longtin of Spotsylvania, VA; three sons, Steve Champ and wife, Kenna of Upper Tract, Adam Champ and wife, Vicky of Franklin, and Bill Champ and wife, Angel of Petersburg; 24 grandchildren, Wendy Cook, Tommy Champ, Lisa Champ, Wes Champ, Tiffany Mongold, Deona “Emmy” Champ, Daniel Champ, Cindy Maddox, Brendan Baldwin, Alyssa Baldwin, Melanie Sponaugle, Mitchell Sponaugle, Esmie Longtin, Johnathon Longtin, Ethan Longtin, Marie and Luke Champ, Zackary Champ, Jessica, Kristy and Marissa Champ, Landon Champ and Ashley and Misty Bland; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Larry Wayne Champ and Richard Allen Champ; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Champ and Mary Elizabeth Champ; three brothers, Ralph Ratcliff, Joe Ratcliff and June Ratcliff; and a sister, Mary Ann Collett.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Elder David Hartman officiating.  Interment followed in Bowers Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Relay For Life.

Barry E. “Huck” Propst

Barry E. “Huck” Propst, 53, of Franklin died Sunday, March 28, 2010, at the home of his sister, Nila Bland, in Brandywine.

He was born Aug. 31, 1956, at Harrisonburg, VA, and was the son of the late Grant Propst and Edna Jane Harper.

He operated Thorn Spring Restaurant, known as Grant's, and was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening.  He was an avid WVU Mountaineers fan and loved playing on the independent softball teams.

Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Nila and Dale Bland of Brandywine; one brother, Lannie F. Propst of Valley Head; four nieces and nephews, Andy Bland, Tammy Davis, Patricia Housley and Patrick Lewis; and four great-nieces and nephews, including two special great-nieces, Laura Davis and Megan Davis.

Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Robert Anderson officiating.  Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

Edna Ruth Fleming

Edna Ruth McFarland Fleming, 86, of Richmond, VA, died Friday, March 26, 2010.

Born in Harrisville, she would have celebrated her 87 birthday on March 31.  She grew up in Franklin.

She attended the University of West Virginia at Petersburg.  During WW II, she worked in an aircraft plant in Hagerstown, MD, before she married Charles.  In 1957, they moved to Richmond, VA, with their family.  Recently the couple lived at the Hermitage in Richmond, VA.

Mrs. Fleming was the director of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church Preschool for 28 years.  A beloved teacher of several generations of children of Lakeside.  Mrs. Fleming was also an elder of the church and was honored as a lifetime member of the Women of the Church.  For many years, she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution.

Her husband of 66 years, Charles William Fleming, survives.

Also surviving are a son, Stephen R. Fleming of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Sharon Patricia Fleming Richter of Huntington Beach, CA; two granddaughters, Kathleen Patricia Fleming of Portland, OR, and Stephanie Nicole Richter of Huntington Beach, CA; a grandson, Joseph Benjamin Richter, III, of Seattle, WA; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth McFarland Phillips of Portland, OR; a sister, Marianne McFarland Gresham of Baltimore, MD; and 19 nieces and nephews and their children.

A memorial service will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church at a later date.

Naomi (Berg) Sites

Naomi (Berg) Sites, 80, of Petersburg died Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Petersburg and was the daughter of the late Thomas J. Berg and Nellie (Miller) Berg.

Mrs. Sites was a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church.  She was a member of the American Legion Post 78 Ladies Auxilary and had served as president for several years.  She also was a charter member of the VFW Post 5464 Ladies Auxilary.

Her husband of 59 years, Joseph E. Sites, survives

Also surviving are one daughter, Diana K. Sites of Petersburg; four sisters: Pauline Hyre and Betty Alexander, both of Petersburg, Marian Wilfong of Franklin and Peggy Bennett of Circleville; one brother: Alan Berg of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two infant brothers.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. G. Richard Cardot and Rev. Richard L. Longbon officiating.  Burial was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Memorials may be made to charity of choice.

Larry Robert Evans, Sr.

Larry Robert Evans, Sr., 59, of Maysville died Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home in Keyser.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1950, in Petersburg and was the son of Robert Lee “Gabe” Evans, a resident of the Grant County Nursing Home, and Romania Barr Evans of Maysville.

Mr. Evans was a 1968 graduate of Petersburg High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.  He was a carpenter and an avid hunter.

His former wife, Sue Evans Hines, preceded him in death.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are four sons, Larry R. “Bucky” Evans, Jr., and wife, Melanie, Cotdy E. Evans and twins, Wyatt L. Evans and Jarrett L. Evans, all of Seneca Rocks; one daughter, Amy S. Arbaugh of Moorefield; two granddaughters, Kelsey Hines and Lauren Arbaugh; three sisters, Barbara Zirkle of Clarksburg, Bonnie Carr of Maysville and Debra Crites of Romney; two brothers, Will Evans and Leon Evans, both of Maysville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Lighthouse Community Church with Wade Armentrout officiating.  Interment followed in the Evans Family Cemetery, Jordan Run Road, Maysville, with military honors by the Petersburg, VFW Post 6454 and the West Virginia Honor Guard.
