Linda S. Hedrick

Linda Sue Hedrick, 48, of Dayton, VA, died Wednesday, march 22, 2006, from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident. 

She was born April 22, 1957, in Washington, PA, and was the daughter of Harold Jack and Gladys Irene Brown Masquelier of West Columbia, SC.  

Mrs. Hedrick graduated from Baldwin High School in Baldwin, MS, and Tennessee Temple University with a BS in education. She was co-owner of B & G Mechanical Services in Dayton, VA, and was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Staunton, VA. 

On Feb. 14, 1981, she married Gary Hedrick, who survives. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by two sons , Benjamin S. Hedrick of Knoxville, TN, and Daniel Hedrick of Dayton, VA; one brother, Tim Masquelier of Gaston, SC; and two sisters, Susan Blackwell of West Columbia, SC and Lois Denson of Anniston, AL.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Andrew P. Hedrick.

Funeral services were held March 28 at the Victory Baptist church in Harrisonburg, VA with Pastor Ken Jackson officiating.  Burial was at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens by Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA.

Bernice W. Chester, 65

Bernice W. Chester of Richmond, VA, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died January 27, 2006. 

Born July 7, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Grover H. and Sallie Raines Warner.  

Mrs. Chester was a long-time member of Oak Grove Baptist church where she was a Sunday School teacher, youth department director and choir member.  She was a member and deaconess of Cosby Memorial Baptist Church, as well as a member of Bethany Place Baptist Church.  She grew up in Riverton, where she and her family were members of Solomon's Chapel. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dewey M. Chester. 

Survivors include two sons, Dewey Chester, Jr., and wife Charlene of Richmond, VA, and John Bruce Chester of Sylva, MC; three granddaughters, Mary Chester Wiggins and husband, Richard of Boston, VA, Anne Chester Coppedge and husband, Christopher of Newport News, VA, and Angela Faye Stewart and husband, Jeffrey of Savannah, GA; five great-grandchildren, Mary Grace, David Thomas, and Hope Ann Coppedge, Jillian Christine Wiggins and Ava Nash Stewart; and three sister, Irene Crist of Strasburg, OH, Juanita McDonough and husband, Hugh of Newport News VA, and Billie Nash and husband, Jay of Long Beach, CA.

Graveside services were held Jan. 30 in Dale Memorial Park. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Bernice to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. 

Bliley Funeral Home Chippenham Chapel, Richmond, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements.  

Irene M. Tanner

Mrs. Irene Mae "Renie" Lantz Tanner, 76, of Petersburg, died March 24, 2006, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Tanner was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Stanley Lantz and Lena Beatrice Propst Lantz. 

She was a protestant by faith. She was a member of the American Legion Post 78 Ladies' Auxiliary and VFW Post 6454 Ladies' Auxiliary in Petersburg. 

Survivors are a special friend, Chester Mackereth of Cumberland, MD; two nieces Cynthia Hinkle of Petersburg and Sherry Cain of Palm Coast, FL; three great-nieces, Rebecca Hinkle, Great-nieces, Rebecca Hinkle, Jessica Hinkle and Ashley Cain; three great-nephews, William Wesley Hinkle, Nathan Lee Hinkle and Dylan Thomas Cain, and one great-great niece, Hailey Cain.  

She also was preceded in death by one brother, Charles William Lantz; and two sisters, Margaret Lantz and Rosabelle Patch.

It was Mrs. Tanner's wish to be cremated.

A memorial services was held Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Petersburg with Bishop David Bradley officiating. 

A private burial was held in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Calvin Leroy Smith 

Calvin Leroy Smith, 73, of McGaheysville, VA, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 24 1933, in Sugar Grove and was a son of the late Roy and Mertie Grogg Smith. 

He was an army veteran and was a member of VFW Post 9666 in Sugar Grove.  He was a member of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, where he was an usher. 

Mr. Smith was employed by Harrisonburg Wholesale Grocery, Whetzel's Wholesale Grocery and did carpentry work.  He was an avid hunter, especially in West Virginia. 

Survivors include his wife of 45 years. Nancy Sacra Smith; a daughter, Rebecca Hawkins of Weyers Cave, VA; three brothers, Donald Smith of Bridgewater, VA, Orville Smith of Bement, IL, and Ona Smith of Hammondsport, NY; three sister, Patricia Sacra of Mount Sidney, VA, Evelyn Varner of Sugar Grove and Leta Billiot of Marrero, LA; and two grandchildren. 

A memorial service was held Monday at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren.  Burial was private. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the William A. Sacra Scholarship Fund, c/o Rockingham Education Association, Rockingham County School Office, 100 Mount Clinton Pike, Harrisonburg, VA  22802.  

Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements. 

Lossie VanMeter, 88

Lossie Orlando "Shorty" VanMeter, 87, of Upper Tract, died March 19, 2006, at the home of his son, Gary VanMeter, in Woodsfield, OH.

Born Sept. 25, 1918, in Grant County, he was the son of the late Guy and Liddie VanMeter. 

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Helmick VanMeter, a resident of the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg; three sons, Gary VanMeter of Woodsfield, OH, Warnie VanMeter of Franklin and Jim VanMeter of Ohio; six step-sons, Donnie VanMeter, Ronnie VanMeter, David VanMeter, Lester VanMeter, Mike VanMeter and Michale Lynn Van Meter, all of Upper Tract;  two daughters, Bonnie Knight and JoAnn VanMeter, both of Akron, OH; three sisters, Joy "Micky" Whetzel of Virginia, Telbie VanMeter, resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg and Belle Dye of Akron, OH; one brother, Russell "Curley" VanMeter of Upper Tract; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, John VanMeter.

A memorial service was held March 25, at the Brushy Run Church of God, Upper Tract with Rev. Bruce Cosner officiating.

Shirley M. Smith, 86

Shirley M. Smith, 86, of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, passed away December 22, 2005.

She was born May 10, 1919, at Cherry Grove and as the daughter of the late James Harrison and charlotte Lottie (Hinkle) Vandevander of Cherry Grove. 

She was employed by the Rex Humbard Foundation for many years and was a member of the Chapel of Prayer Baptist church. 

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, James R. "Smitty" Smith.  

She is survived by three sons, James Smith, Jr., Jerry Smith and Mike Smith, all of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sister, Mable Hennessy and Alpha Bennett and one brother, Russell Vandevander. 

A funeral service was held Dec. 27 at chapel of Prayer Baptist Church and interment followed in the the Northlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. 

Arrangements were made by Hennessey Funeral Home in Akron, OH. 

Jessie Armstrong, 84

Jessie S. Armstrong, 84, of Churchville, VA, died Friday , March 24, 2006. 

Mrs. Armstrong was born May 19, 1921, in Sugar Grove and was daughter of the late Riley Jacob and Maggie Viola Smith Simmons.  

She was a member of the Lighthouse church in Swoope, VA, and also attended the Church of God in Deerfield, VA. She was employed at king's Daughters' Hospital and was a local caregiver. 

On April 11, 1936, she married Melvin S. Armstrong, who preceded her in death Dec. 24, 1986. 

Survivors include two daughters, Norma June Slawson of Doe Hill, VA, and Brenda Crump of Churchville, VA; three sons, Lyle Wayne Armstrong and Steve Armstrong, both of Churchville, VA; a sister Charlotte Tichenor of Staunton, VA; two brothers, Norval Simmons of Cleveland, OH, and Blaine Simmons of Staunton, VA;  24 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. 

The Revs. Harold Lee Wade and Jerry Thomas conducted the funeral Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA..  Burial was in the McKendree Cemetery.
