Treva M. Mitchell, 79

Treva May Mitchell, 79 of Harrisonburg, VA, died March 11, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born September 18, 1929 in Timberville, VA,  and was a daughter of the late Isaac F. and Grace Biller Pence.

She had been living at Steele’s Home for Adults since March, 2005. She worked at Rocco in Dayton, VA, before retiring in 1991.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Janice Mitchell of Harrisonburg, VA; daughters and sons in law, Linda Mitchell of Johnson City, IL, Judy and Carson Smith of Penn Laird, VA, Brenda Cook and companion Kenneth Eye of Brandywine, Debbie and Gary Hottinger of Grottoes, VA, Donna and Wayne Secrist of Myersville, MD, JoAnn and Charlie Reedy of Fulks Run,VA; a brother, Carroll “Jim” Pence of Mt. Jackson, VA; sisters, Faye Miller of Timberville, VA, Joyce Mongold of Harrisonburg, VA; eight grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; family friend, Nanci Motschiedlar of Johnson City, IL.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; Chester, Stanley, and Billy Pence, and three sisters; Mary Frances Tusing, Louise and Peggy Pence.

The Rev. Roger Austin will conduct a graveside service at St. Lukes United Church of Christ near Timberville, VA.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at R.M.H., 235 Cantrell Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Stanley Nesselrodt, 85

Stanley Wade Nesselrodt, 85 of Bergton, VA died March 10, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

He was born October 12, 1923 in Fort Seybert and was a son of the late Leslie F. and Janie Cowger Nesselrodt.

Mr. Nesselrodt taught school in Rockingham County, VA, for 33 years. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of WWII. He was a member of Damascus Church of the Brethren in Bergton, VA, where he enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was the last surviving charter member of the Bergton Ruritan Club. He served as an officer and director of Bergton Community Fair. He was a former member of Harrisonburg Turkey Trotters Square Dance Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working with woodwork in his shop, gardening, golfing, camping, and traveling.

His wife of over 62 years, the former Eileen Smith whom he married in 1946, survives.

Also surviving are a son, Richard “Dick” Nesselrodt of Bergton, VA; a brother Virgil Nesselrodt and wife, Fadene of Bergton, VA; nieces, Deborah Nesselrodt, Jane Belloff and Phyllis Cassada; nephews, Scott Nesselrodt, Reggie Kimble and Chuck Kimble.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Francis Kimble.

A funeral service was held Saturday at Damascus Church of the Brethren. Burial was in the Caplinger cemetery in Criders, VA.

Golden Richard Schell

Golden Richard Schell, 70 of Cabins passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

Mr. Schell was born on June 25, 1938 in Scherr, the son of the late Teddy W. and Anna Lilley Schell.

He was a member of Petersburg Southern Baptist Church, NRA, WV Men's Baptist Ministries, and the American Legion Post #6454.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in the French-Algerian War.  He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1956. 

He was a diesel mechanic for Hinkle Trucking, Dettinburn Trucking and Kessel Lumber Company.

His wife, Donna Jean Delawder, who he married on July 6, 1956, survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Dane F. Schell and wife, Pamela of Stephens City, VA, J.C. Schell and wife, Rhonda of Cabins, and Kevin Schell, Petersburg; one brother, Roland Woodrow Schell, Cabins; and six grandchildren. 

He was also preceded in death by one brother, William "Bill" Schell.

Rev. Allen Friel conducted a memorial service on Friday, in the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg.

His body was donated to medical science.

Roger Botkin, 63

Roger Dale Botkin, 63, of Monterey, VA, died Wednesday evening, March 11, 2009, at his home.

He was born Oct. 4, 1945, in Highland county, VA, a son of the late Edward Harrison and Eva (Puffenbarger) Botkin.

Botkin was a livestock farmer and a truck driver.   He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.  He was a member of the Hiner Church of the Brethren and the Stonewall Ruritan Club.  He loved to play bingo, hunt and fish.

His wife, Leona C. Botkin of Monterey, VA, and the formerly of Smith Creek, survives. 

Also surviving are three step-daughters, Bonnie, Diana and Jenny Botkin, all of Monterey, VA; a step-son, Berlie M. Botkin, Jr., of Scottsville, VA; a special granddaughter, Josey Bolling; and four step-grandchildren, Ellie, Talan, Karsyn and Cooper Botkin. 

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Alvin Botkin.

A funeral service was conducted Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, with the Rev. Garold Senger and The Rev. Jack Tucker officiating.  Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland County Rescue Squad, PO Box 268, Monterey, VA 24465.  

C. Jean Nelson, 79

C. Jean Nelson, 79, of Martinsburg died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at the Winchester Medical Center inWinchester, VA.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Chapel on Jake Hill Road at Brushy Run.  Inurnment will follow at Cherry Hill Cemetery at Upper Tract.
