Vincent John Budris

Vincent John Budris, 86, of Franklin and formerly of Cheshire, CT, passed away Tuesday evening, March 6, 2012 at his home.

He was born March 25, 1925 in Bethlehem, Connecticut and was the son of the late John and Teckla Skabeikis Budris.

Mr. Budris was a farmer and carpenter, and had worked as a millwright for Allegheny Ludlum in Wallingford, CT, retiring in 1986. He and his wife, Shirley Lacey Budris, moved to Franklin in 1986, where he restored the Priest Mill, which was placed on the National Historic Registry. As a result of the restoration, he was able to proudly generate his own electricity.

He was a man of immense talent and was generous with his time and skills. He was always willing to lend a kind hand. Family was most important to him, and every family member has their own fond memories that they will carry in their hearts. He was a loyal fan of all college sports, especially "his" UCONN women's basketball.

Freddie Lee Moats, age 89 of Sugar Grove, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Moats attended Pendleton County Schools, including the Moatstown Schoolhouse. He was a handyman and a farmer and he worked for Pendleton Senior and Family Services as a Maintenance Worker. He attended Moats Chapel AME Church in Moyers.

Mr. Moats was a WWII Veteran of the US Army. He was the last surviving African American World War II veteran in Pendleton County. He was Private First Class Longshoreman and Technician Fifth Grade (T/5) Hotel Tender. Freddie was awarded a Good Conduct medal and the WWII Victory medal. As a private, he was a certified rifleman and light machine gunner. He entered the service February 26, 1943 and was honorably discharged on January 13, 1946.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Moats, Burner Lee Moats; eight sisters, Clona Moats, Betty Moats, Lilly Moats, Hazel Moats, Margie Wright, Orpha Smith Strawder, Helen Moats, and Liza Jane Moats.

Interment will be at Harper Hill Cemetery, Moyers, with military graveside services provided by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Beulah Cook Will, 96, formerly of Harrisonburg, VA and Mt. Crawford, VA died Monday, March 5, 2012. She had been living in the Lehighton, PA, area to be with her family.

Mrs. Will was a sewing machine operator for Metro Pants in Harrisonburg for many years before retiring in 1980. Beulah was a lifelong member of the Mt. Crawford United Methodist Church; and was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed working her vegetable and flower gardens.

Surviving from her first marriage are two grandsons, James Snyder and his wife, Janet, of Lehighton, PA; and Craig Snyder and his wife, Nicole, of Grantville, PA; three great-granddaughters, Christina, Joelle, and Ellyana; and one great-grandson, Cameron.

Surviving from her second marriage are three daughters, Lois Baker of Weyers Cave; Judy Whisman of Harrisonburg and Audrey Rexrode of Keezletown; four sons, James Will of Elkton; Dwight Will of New Market; Charles Will of Harrisonburg and Ronald Will of Grottoes; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Arthur “Buster” Eugene Rexrode, 76, of Pirkey Lane, Harrisonburg, passed away March 6 2012, at UVA, Charlottesville, VA.

He had been in the National Guard and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. After 30 years in the bread business he had retired from Flowers Bakery and then Perdue. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing his stories. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Harrisonburg, VA.

Also surviving are three daughters, Ina “Jeanie” Jean and husband Jay Martin of Grottoes, VA, Vickie and husband Carroll Bland of Bridgewater, VA, Pamela and husband James “Cowboy” Whetzel of Broadway, VA; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters Betty Conrad of Ohio, and Janet Hyler and husband Harry of Mt. Crawford, VA.

Evelyn Carr Layman, 100, a resident of Harrisonburg Health and Rehab Center, passed away on March 12, 2012.

She was born on January 8, 1912 in Whitmer and was the daughter of the late Solomon and Peachie Montoney Carr.

Mrs. Layman had been primarily a homemaker and was also employed by the Harrisonburg Silk Mill, Harman Hatchery, and the Virginia Mennonite Home cafeteria. She was a charter member of the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church.

Surviving are a son, C. Sheldon Layman and his wife Marilee of Dayton, VA; two grandchildren, Michele L. Sites and husband Robbie of Sugar Grove; Michael S. Layman and wife Chris of Wytheville, VA; and five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Madison, and Regan Sites and Ryan and Will Layman.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church with Revs. Ron Carr and Wayne North officiating. . A private burial will be held at Weavers Mennonite Cemetery.

Beulah Mae Eckard, 91, of Mt. Sidney, VA, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Avante at Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born in Sugar Grove on July 15, 1920, and was a daughter of the late Samuel and Mattie (Eckard) Moats.

Mrs. Eckard worked as a cook for 13 years at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and 5 years at the Bridgewater Home. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Brandywine.

Surviving are three daughters, Anna Cupp and husband Harold of Sugar Grove, Shirley Lohr and husband Junior of Alexandria, VA and Gloria Wood and husband David of Mt. Sidney, VA; two sons, Edwin Eckard and wife Ann of Stafford, VA and Paul Eckard and wife Martha of Catlett, VA; a sister, Ruth Howdyshell of Dayton, VA; a brother, Richard Moats and wife Connie of Woodbridge, VA. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and three great great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Monroe Moats; a sister, Annie Calhoun; and a grandson, Harold Eckard.

A funeral service was conducted March 8, at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, VA, with Rev. Gary Monroe officiating. Entombment followed Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, VA.
