Sybilla Clara Kisamore

Sybilla Clara Kisamore, 92, of New Market, VA, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at her home.

Born July 15, 1920 in Whitmer, the daughter of the late George Alonzo and Laura (Hedrick) Allen.

Mrs. Kisamore was a native of Pendleton County. She and her brothers were raised by their single mom since their father died in 1925. She worked on the family farm, raised and canned vegetables and walked to the Brethren church faithfully each Sunday. She lovingly raised eleven children, eight of which were born in Pendleton County near the Seneca Rocks area.

Her door was always open and guests always got a meal when they came to her house. If they didn't eat, she felt insulted. She was kind, worked hard, persevered and never gave up.

Her husband, Edward “EJ” Kisamore, preceded her in death.

Surviving are five daughters, Gay Botkin, Weyers Cave, VA, Ruby Miller, Grottoes, VA, Ronna Bennett, Mt. Solon, VA, Barbara Shoemaker and Carolyn Bly, both of Edinburg, VA; six sons, Ray Kisamore, Roy Kisamore, both of Churchville, VA, Rex Kisamore, Staunton, VA, Roger Kisamore, Quicksburg, VA, Dolan Kisamore, New Market, VA, and Kenton Kisamore, Maurertown, VA; 26 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and her faithful dog, Weegee.

She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Willard Alonzo Allen and Archie Russell Allen, grandsons, Jerry Botkin, Mike Puffenbarger and Timmy Shoemaker, and great-grandson, Robbie Kisamore.

A graveside service was held Saturday at Mt. Jackson Cemetery with Pastor George Bowers officiating.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Antioch Church of the Brethren Building Fund or the Shenandoah Co. Animal Shelter.

Lillian Lorraine Harman

Lillian Lorraine (Mullenax) Harman, age 91 of Upper Tract, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

She was born April 24, 1921 in Crab Bottom, VA and was the daughter of the late William Edward "Billy" Mullenax and Sudie (Lamb) Mullenax.

Mrs. Harman was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in Mozer.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Her husband, C. W. “Bud” Harman, preceded her in death in 1981.

Surviving are three sons, Warren Harman and wife Pat of Harrisonburg, VA, Delmer Harman and wife, Sherry of Waldorf, MD, Alvin Harman and wife, Gretta of Grottoes, VA; one son-in-law, Dwight Kimble of Upper Tract; four daughters, Nina Simmons and husband, Vernon, Jr., of Moorefield, Judy Sherman and husband, Gerald of Lahmansville, Dolores Harman of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Ramona Harman and husband, Gary of Upper Tract; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Sylvia Kimble and Rispa Armentrout; two sister-in-laws, Viola Mae Kimble and Kathleen Harman; step-mother, Betty Mullenax; a son-in-law, Guy Dolly and an infant Granddaughter, Sharon Cerise Simmons.

Funeral services will be held on today at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in Mozer, with the Reverend Rita G. Beeman officiating. A private burial will be in the C.W. Harman Family Cemetery in Kline.

The family received friends on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.

William Hevener

William Curtis Hevener, 95, a resident of Harrisonburg, VA, died Saturday afternoon, March 9, 2013, at his home.

A son of the late Edward and Merial Bodkin Hevener, he was born on June 3, 1917 in Brandywine.

Mr. Hevener had been making his home in Harrisonburg, VA for the past 75 years. He had served in the Army during World War II and was a member or Rion-Bowman VFW Post No. 632. Mr. Hevener was a truck driver of Shenandoah Pride for 38 years.

On June 24, 1937 he married Reba Bodkin Hevener who preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2005.

Surviving are one son, William A. Hevener of Kettering, OH; one daughter, Judy Hevener of Harrisonburg, VA; a granddaughter, Sabrina Barragan of Harrisonburg, VA; a great-grandson, Ronald Fellows of Harrisonburg, VA and a great-great-grandson, Bentley Hayward of Palmer, Alaska.

His body was cremated at the Lindsey Funeral Homes and Crematory, Harrisonburg, VA.

Darlene Rushby, 75

Darlene Osborn Rushby, 75, of Blue Grass, VA, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013 at her residence.

She was born Dec. 6, 1937 at Mapleside near Paullina, Iowa, a daughter of the late Darlington and Elba Mabel (Hinshaw) Cope.

Mrs. Rushby received her teaching certificate at Northern Iowa University, and worked as an elementary teacher in Iowa and Kansas schools. For several years she also helped to operate her first husbands veterinary clinic at Hillsboro Kan. After moving to Highland County, VA., she served as a nurse at Pendleton Nursing Home at Franklin. Following retirement, she worked as the librarian at the Blue Grass Book Bank. Mrs. Rushby was a lifelong adherent of the Orthodox Quaker faith. For the past ten years she and husband, Bill found spiritual nurture and Christian fellowship in the McDowell Mennonite Church. Mrs. Rushby will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving wife, mother and gifted poet.

Her first husband, James E. Osborn, preceded her in death on October 3, 1977. Her second husband, William F. Rushby, whom she married on Nov. 24, 1978, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Janene Good and husband Gerald of Harrisonburg, VA, and Clarie Smith of Gun Barrel City, TX; two sons, Justin Osborn and wife Susanne of Seattle, WA., and Jonathan Osborn and wife Lindsey of Virginia Beach, VA.; three grandchildren, Danielle Smith, James and Emily Osborn; her sister, Lyn Cope of Melbourne Beach, FL.; and her brother, Lowell Cope of Lincoln, NE.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Osborn and David Rushby.

A funeral service will be conducted today at 2 p.m at the McDowell Mennonite Church in the Stonewall Ruritan Club Building in McDowell, with Pastor Steve Good, Pastor Clair Heatwole, Rev. Andre Crummett, speaking and Dr. Daniel Freed and Bradley Heatwole officiating. Burial will follow at the McDowell Mennonite Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Stanley Keith Helmick, Sr.

Stanley Keith Helmick, Sr., 68, of Rough Run passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his home.

He was born March 7, 1944 in Rough Run, and was a son of the late Glenn Cover Helmick and Elsie Virginia (Reel) Helmick.

Mr. Helmick was a carpenter and was superintendent for several construction companies and later worked for Hanover Shoe in Franklin.

He was a member of the Rough Run Church of the Brethren.

His wife of 42 years, Mary Etta (Kile) Helmick, survives.

Also surviving are three sons: Stanley Keith Helmick Jr. and wife, Martha of Brandywine, Bradley S. Helmick and wife Tina of Newport News, VA, Greg P. Helmick and wife Barbara of Woodbridge, VA; Two daughters: Anita Jo Spake and husband Danny of Liberty, NC, Martie J. Helmick and companion Rusty Friel of Dorcas; 10 grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren; two sisters: Dorothy Phillips and husband Dean of Martinsburg, Arleta Helmick and companion Carl VanMeter of Maysville; several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul Helmick and one sister, Cleta Helmick; and one nephew, Jeff Helmick

Funeral service were held at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Lynn Rohrbaugh and Pastor Randy Mongold officiating.

Violet Nelson

Violet Marie Nelson, 78, of New Market, VA, formally of Harrisonburg, VA, died March 5, 2013, from injuries received in a car accident in Rockingham County.

She was born on July 28, 1934 in Circleville and was the daughter of the late John Edwin Nelson and Mattie L. (Mullenax) Nelson.

Her husband, Norman Edward Burgoyne, preceded her in death in 1972.

Surviving are children, Anthony L. Nelson, wife Mary Lou of Harrisonburg, VA, Bobby Boyd Burgoyne and wife, Myra of Clearwater, FL., Johnny Lee Burgoyne and wife, Brenda of Fishersville, VA., Michael E. Hall and wife, Diane, of Harrisonburg, VA, Sandra D. Simmers and husband, Steve, of Broadway, VA., and Debra K. Koontz, of Moorefield; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

A graveside service was held Monday at the North Fork Cemetery, Riverton.

Leta Virginia Decker

Leta Virginia Decker, 86, of College Park, MD, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at Hillhaven Assisted Living Center in Adelphi, MD.

She was born on Feb. 11, 1927, in Upper Tract daughter of the late Alton Parker and Mary (Harold) Hedrick.

Mrs. Decker graduated from Franklin High School in 1945 and worked first at Kelly Tires in Cumberland, MD, and then for Merkle Press in Washington, DC, where she met her husband.

She was a homemaker, who after raising her own children, helped to care for her grandchildren.

Her husband, Robert “Bob” Decker, whom she married in 1950, preceded her in death in August, 1991.

Surviving are four children, Darlene McClurkin and husband, Peter, Lawrence “Larry” Decker and wife, Laura, Karen Murray and husband, Tim, and Scott Decker; six grandchildren, Bekki, Curtis, Jimmy, Christopher, Tony, and Lauren; seven great-grandchildren, Drew, Abby, Xavier, Jason, Nora, Lucinda and Grace; a sister, Bonnie Mowery of Upper Tract; a brother Carroll “Skinner” Hedrick of Upper Tract; four aunts, Icie Clark, Mary Thompson, Madeline Whitecotton and Pauline Waggy; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Hedrick.

Services were held on Saturday at Donald V. Borgwardt Funeral Home, Beltsville, MD, with the Reverend Alicia Vanisko officiating. Internment was at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, MD.

Naomi Grace Propst

Naomi "Grace" Propst, 64, of Franklin, passed away at her home on Monday, March 11, 2013.

She was born May 7, 1948 at St. George, and was the daughter of the late Jacob Nine and Virginia Wotring Nine.

She had worked at Goetz Candy in Baltimore, MD and with her husband, Garry Propst, Auctioneer. Grace was a member of the Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roger Pifer and also by her second husband, Edwin Johnson. She is survived by her third husband, Garry C. Propst.

Also surviving are one daughter, Patricia Raines of Franklin, an adopted son, Robert Alexander of Franklin; four sisters, Susie Hershman and Ruby Hershman both of Moatsville, Sharlett George of Junior, Frances Nine of Franklin; five brothers, Carl Nine of Montrose, Jerry Nine of Elkins, Richard Nine and Charles Nine both of Moatsville, Johnny Nine of Thornton; one granddaughter, Sabrina Mallow of Franklin; One grandson, Cody Alexander of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, with Pastors Rob Borror, Jason and Jess Felici officiating. Burial will be at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. to 8p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home.
