Virginia Rosalie Vogel 

Virginia Roselie Vogel, 91, of Franklin and formerly of south Charleston, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA, following a brief illness. 

She was born August 3, 1913, and was the daughter of the late Zoa Sheets.

Her husband, John A. Vogel, preceded her in death on August 29, 1995. 

She was a pharmaceutical technician and had worked at Boyer's Pharmacy and Long's Pharmacy in South Charleston.  She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in South Charleston for over fifty years.  She was a member of Darlington United Methodist Church and attended Franklin Main Street United Methodist church.  For the past nine and one-half years, she made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Jack D. and Ruth Vogel of Franklin. 

Also surviving are a son an daughter-in-law, Joe A. Vogel and rose Soriano-Vogel of Tucson, AZ; three grandchildren, John Vogel of Franklin, Traci Vogel-Pavolka and Carl McAloney, both of Tucson, AZ, and three great-granddaughters.

She also was preceded in death by two sons and five brothers. 

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Keller Funeral Home Chapel in Dunbar, with Rev. David Fisher, Pastor Jim Thomas and REv. Eileen G. Dumier offciating.  Graveside services were conducted at North View Cemetery at New Martinsville. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Pendleton Nursing Home, PO Box 700, Franklin, WV 26807; Pendleton Senior and Family SErvices, Po Box 9, FRanklin, WV, 26807 or Gideons International. 

Sally M. Kirk

Sally M. Kirk, 77 of Franklin, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mrs. Kirk was born Nov. 27, 1927, in Cleveland, OH, and was the daughter of the late Harry E. Gray and Dorothy Helen Rossow Gray. 

She was a graduate of Lakewood High School.  She was a retired claims adjuster for the Health and Welfare Office of the United food Commercial Workers UFCW Local No. 880 in Cleveland, OH, and was a finance officer for the city of Westlake, OH.  She was a member of the River Chapter OES NO. 517, No. 135 Mended Hearts of Harrisonburg, VA and Franklin Presbyterian Church.  

On Aug. 30, 1947, she married Ronald K. Kirk Sr., who survives. 

Also surviving are  a daughter, Barbara G. Kirk of Parma, OH; three sons, Ronald K. Kirk, Jr and wife, Marcia of Franklin, Thomas M. Kirk of Lakewood, OH, and Robert D. Kirk and wife Jeanette of North Ridgeville, OH; two sisters, Ruth Cimino and husband, Fran of Westlake, OH, and Donna Pfister and husband, Richard of North Olmstead, OH; four grandchildren, Kris and Justin Kirk of Franklin, Joshua Kirk of N. Ridgeville, OH, and Genni Kirk of Rocky River, OH; and one great-grandchild, Bryce Kirk of Franklin. 

The funeral was conducted Monday at the Jenkins Funeral Chapel of Westlake, OH. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Westlake, OH.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton county Rescue Squad or Franklin Presbyterian Church.  

Gilbert Simmons

Gilbert Clinton Simmons, 82, of Sugar Grove died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Bridgewater Retirement Community, Bridgewater, VA. 

He was a member of Crummett Run Church of the Brethren.  He was a retired Pendleton County school bus driver and a farmer.  He had also worked for the CC Camps as a young man.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in both the Pacific and European Theaters, having received two Bronze Stars.  He was a member of the VFW Post 9666 in Sugar Grove.

On May 20, 1950, he married Marie Virginia Wilfong Simmons, who preceded him in death April 17, 2000. 

Surviving are four brothers, Vernon Simmons of Staunton, VA, Hobert Simmons of Romney, William Simmons and Alvin Simmons, both of Moyers; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

He also was preceded in death by one brother Oather Paul Simmons. 

THe REv. jerry Smith and Patrick Godfrey conducted the funeral Saturday at Crummett Run Church of the Brethren.  Burial was in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Gretta Mae Warner

Gretta Mae Warner, 88, of Cherry Grove, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. 

Mrs. Warner was born Oct. 6, 1916, at Dry Run, a daughter of the late Mike and Fannie Mae Waybright.

She graduated from Circleville High School in 1937 and was a homemaker. She had been a member of Community Educational Outreach Service since 1942 and an honorary member since 1992. She was a past president of North Dry Run Home Demonstration Club. She was honored as Pendleton County Belle in 1987. Since 1966, she had been a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 138. 

She was a member of North Dry Run United Methodist Church, where she had served a superintendent and secretary-treasurer.

On June 20, 1939, she married Russell M. Warner, who preceded her in death May 25, 2003.

Surviving are two daughters, Frances W. von Schilling of Cherry Grove and Sherry Lee Pillow and husband, Dennis, of Warrenton, VA; a brother, Junior Waybright of Palmyra, PA; a grandson, Adrian Sean Pillow; and two great-grandchildren, Susan Lily and Maxwell Wilson Pillow.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Jason, Joseph and Dwight Waybright; and four sisters, Marie Waybright, Gaitha Bell, Ethel Colaw and Evelyn Rexrode.

The Rev. Stanley Kile and Mike Lambert conducted the funeral Sunday at the Basagic Funeral Home.  Burial was in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery. 

The Order of the Eastern Star no. 138 conducted a memorial service Saturday at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Fork Rescue Squad.  

Goldie J. Shirk

Goldie Jane Shirk, 76, of Cabins, died March 2, 2005, at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg.

Mrs. Shirk was born March 17, 1928, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late Otis VanMeter and Alice (Kimble) VanMeter. 

She was a homemaker and a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  

Her husband, Henry Shirk, preceded her in death March 18, 1982.  

She is survived by three daughters, Patsy Champ and Mary Sherman, both of Petersburg, and Patricia Goldizen of Maysville;  three sons, Michael Shirk, Clyde Shirk and Rodger Shirk all of Cabins; two sisters Dora Alt and Thelma Shreve both of Petersburg, seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.   .

She was also preceded in death by two sons Raymond and Garry Randall Shirk; one great-grandson, Tristan, four brothers, Melvin, Mervin, Clinton and Kermit Kimble; and three sisters, Macil Dolly, Gaynell Whetzel and Gernie Judy. 

Elder Stephen Kimble and Bishop David Bradley conducted the funeral Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at the Shirk family cemetery.  

Memorial donations may be made to Petersburg High School or Pendleton County High School.  

Russell M. Kuykendall

Russell M. Kuykendall, 79, of Fort Seybert died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin where he had lived for the past week. 

Mr. Kuykendall was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Fort Seybert and was the son of the late James Elmer Kuykendall and Elsie Rexrode Kuykendall. He was the mail carrier for the Franklin-Brandywine-Milam route for 33 years.  He was a member of Bethlehem Church of the Brethren, where he was Sunday School superintendent. 

On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Maude Elizabeth Mitchell Kuykendall, who survives. 

Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Helen Kuykendall of Fort Seybert; a daughter, Bonnie Lambert of Elkton, VA; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.  

The Rev. Richard Lintz conducted the funeral Friday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was in the Rexrode family cemetery in Fort Seybert.

Retha Hartman Radovich 

Mrs. Retha Hartman Radovich, 81, died peacefully on Feb. 23, 2005, in Baltimore, MD, after a bout with cancer. 

She was born in 1924 and was the daughter of Charles and Pearlie Hartman.  

Mrs. Radovich grew up in Franklin and moved to Baltimore, MD, at the age of 18 to work for Eastern Aircraft druing World War II.  She worked as a welder at martin Marietta for 20 years and a nurse at city Hospital in Baltimore, MD, for seven years, until retiring in the early 1970s to help her daughter with granddaughter. 

Although much of her life was spent in Baltimore, MD, she always affectionately referred to Franklin as her home.  

On Ssept. 5, 1944, she married Francis Marion Radovich, who preceded her in death. 

She is survived by a daughter, Linda J. West of Baltimore, MD; a granddaughter, Nicole D. Kelley of Towson, MD; two sisters: Catherine Smith of Franklin and Dessie Witt of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers; Edwin Hartman and Charles Hartman, both of Franklin; and a half brother, Leslie Lambert of Franklin.  

Funeral services were held at Evans Funeral Chapel in Baltimore, MD on Feb. 26.  Bishop Robert Moesinger conducted the service with inspirational talks given by Pastor Winnie Gilliam, Roland Huebner and Kathy and Don Wessel.  She had requested her friend, Vanessa Lawson to sing the "Lord's Prayer" at her funeral.  She was laid to rest at Parkwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Baltimore, MD. 

Grethal Vandevander

Grethal Lee Vandevander, 91, of Nella's Nursing Home in Elkins died March 5, 2005, at Nella’s Nursing Home where she had lived since 1998. .

Mrs. Vandevander was born Oct. 30, 1913, on Elk Mountain at Cherry Grove, and was the daughter of the late Glendi Lambert and Nellie Mae Thompson Lambert.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bit Run Presbyterian Chapel in  Cherry Grove.  

Her husband, Willie Vandevander, preceded her in death May 21, 1999.

Survivors include five daughters, Lena Mae Hiett of Falling Waters, Minnie Pearl Bennett, Cindy Sue Jarvis and Myrtle Lee Vandevander, of Elkins, and Bonnie Lou Mick of Cherry Grove; four sons, Willis Vandevander of Brandywine, Golden Vandevander of Norton, Allen Vandevander of Whitmer and Curtis Vandevander of Republic, OH; 43 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and more than 40 great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Jeffie and Charlie Vandevander; three brothers, Ashford, Oakland and Richford Lambert; and a sister, Arzella Wimer.

The Rev. Velma Waddell conducted the funeral Wednesday at Big Run Presbyterian Church in Cherry Grove.  Burial was in Lambert Family Cemetery, Elk Mountain, by Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.

Virgie Simmons, 89

Virgie Mae Simmons, 89, a resident of Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin, died Monday, March 7, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, were incomplete at press time.
