Olie “Guy” Smith

Olie “Guy” Smith, age 84 of Franklin, WV, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

He was born at Circleville, WV on March 30, 1927, the son of the late Olie (January 20, 1982) and Tressie Lee Calhoun Smith (April 17, 1970).

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Circleville High School and was a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church. He retired in 1969 as a Sergeant from the US Air Force. He worked for Sites Chevrolet and retired as a manager in 1990 from Franklin Oil Company. He was a member of Pendleton Lodge #144 AF & AM, American Legion #78, VFW #6454, and Easter Star Chapter #138.

In July 1949, Guy married Lucille Audrey Mays who survives in Franklin.

Also surviving are a daughter, Margaret Hedrick and husband Terry of Franklin; five grandchildren, Darren Hedrick of Franklin, Warren Hedrick and wife Judy of Franklin, Doug Rupe of Franklin, Travis Allen Smith of Salt Lake City, UT, Kevin Charles Smith of Riverton, WY; and a great-granddaughter.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Guy Allen “Buster” Smith (July 6, 1999).

Funeral services will be held today at 11a.m.at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin with Rev. Sam Harper officiating. Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin with military graveside services provided by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Pendleton County Volunteer Fire or Rescue Squads.

Ella Flinn

Ella Virginia Lee Raines Flinn, age 88, of Pendleton Manor, formerly of Moorefield and Petersburg, passed away on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Grant Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

She was born at Old Fields, WV on February 13, 1924, the daughter of the late Homer L. and Thelma V. Liller Raines.

She attended Hardy County Schools and was a homemaker.

On September 25, 1942, she married William Mason Flinn, who preceded her in death on March 20, 1995.

Ms. Flinn is survived by one daughter, Carol V. (Flinn) Graber and husband Edward of Jamestown, PA; one son, Larry F. Flinn and wife Jeanne of Franklin; a sister, Juanita See of Fisher; a brother, Gordon Raines and wife Eva of Moorefield; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son, William Mason, Jr. on December 3, 2002.

At the request of Ms. Flinn, her body has been cremated. Rev. Stanly Kile officiated a graveside memorial service at Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield, WV.

Viola May Kimble

Viola May Kimble, 94, of Upper Tract, went to be with the Lord early Wednesday morning, February 29, 2012 at her daughter's home in Upper Tract.

She was born in Kline, on July 18, 1917 and was the daughter of the late Carrie A. and Alvin S. Harman.

In 1982, she was honored as Mother of the Year by the Franklin Ruritan Club and was acknowledged as the Oldest Lady at the 2009 and 2011 annual Kimble/Alt reunions. She never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to everyone. She loved her family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She also loved to cook and enjoyed inviting everyone to visit and have dinner. She always filled the table with many delicious home-cooked meals and was known for her kind heart and generosity. A charter member of the Brushy Run Church of God, she loved her church family and remained supportive until her passing.

Her husband, Olie F. Kimble, whom she was happily married to for 62 years, preceded her in death on November 13, 1996.

Mrs. Kimble is survived by two sons. Reginald Kimble of Arthur, and Alvin (Annette) Kimble of Upper Tract; four daughters, Mildred Riggleman of Upper Tract, Elaine Keplinger of Upper Tract, Kay (Stanley) Simmons of Upper Tract, Wanda ( Bill) Showalter of Staunton, VA; one foster daughter, Debbie (Owen) Simmons of Franklin; ten grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lillian Harman of Kline; and many nieces, nephews and cousins

She was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen (Katie) Harman of Harrisonburg, VA and one brother, C.W. (Bud) Harman of Kline.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Bruce Cosner officiating.

Burial was at Kline Cemetery.

Roosevelt “Rosey” Turner

Roosevelt "Rosey" Turner, 84, of Franklin and formerly of Seneca Rocks, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the home of his companion, Mary Mitchell.

He was born September 11, 1927 at Onego, and was the son of the late Ted and Zona Mae Davis Turner.

Mr. Turner attended the one and two room schools in Pendleton County, worked on farms and in the woods, before serving his country in the United States Army from September 30, 1949 to December 20, 1952. He served in Korea, was missing in action and an assumed prisoner of war, and received the Purple Heart and other medals.

After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Turner went to Ohio where he worked five years at Youngstown Kitchen Cabinet. He retired after working 30 years at Republic Steel in Warren, Ohio.

He was a member of VFW Post #3647 of Elkins, the American Legion Post #0078 of Petersburg, the United Steel Workers Association, the NRA and the Onego Church of the Brethren. He loved to hunt, fish, dig ginseng and ramps, and ride his four-wheeler to feed the birds, squirrels and deer in the winter.

He was twice married, first to Alice Hise Turner, then to Betty Mick Turner, who preceded him in death on February 3, 1998.

Surviving are one son; one step-son; one step-daughter; one sister, Dorothy Warner and husband, Jim of Seneca Rocks; four brothers, Lester (Joe) Turner and wife, Mary of Seneca Rocks, Bruce (Pete) Turner and wife, Helen of Cabins, Ivan (Buck) Turner and wife, Carolyn of Cabins, Sonny (Jake) Turner and wife, Nancy of Bloomery; two aunts, Effie Davis George of Harrisonburg, VA and Lara Turner Long of Maysville; one grandson; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Herman and wife, Evelyn and several nephews, nieces, cousins, uncles and aunts.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Onego Church of the Brethren with Pastors Charles (Dusty) Twigg and Greg Adamson officiating. Burial will be at the Turner Family Cemetery at Onego with full military graveside rites conducted by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin and at the church from 10:00 AM Friday until the funeral service.

Esta Susan VanMeter

Esta Susan (Heavner) VanMeter, age 84 of Maysville, WV died Friday, March 2, 2012 in Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

She was born March 4, 1927 in Grant County, WV and was a daughter of the late Harry E. Heavner and Anna (Mallow) Heavner.

Mrs. Vanmeter was a member of the Lighthouse Community Church.

Her husband of 59 years, David F. VanMeter, survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Steve VanMeter and wife, Sheila of Arthur, Danny VanMeter and wife, Amy of Franklin, Mark VanMeter and wife, Brenda of Franklin; four daughters, Jean Corbin and husband Allen of Romney, Juanita Mauzy and husband Delmas of Dorcas, Hilda Moyers and husband Robert of Maysville, Beverly Dolly of Maysville, 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchilden and one great -great grandson; a step-mother, Orpha Staffer of Petersburg; one sister, Susie Figueroa of Petersburg; three brothers, Stephen W. Heavner of Petersburg, Larry J. Heavner of Warrensburg, Missouri, Dick A. Heavner of Hartsmanville; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two infant children, Johnny Wayne VanMeter and Susan Louise VanMeter; one grandson, Matthew Moyers; one infant granddaughter, Rachael VanMeter; one infant great grandson, Cooper VanMeter.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Lighthouse Community Church with Rev. Joseph Eversole and Rev Ken Phares officiating. Interment in Maysville Cemetery.
