Julius "Butch" Basagic 

Julius "Butch" Basagic, 82, of Fairmont died Feb. 27, 2007, at his residence after a long illness following a stroke in 1989. 

Mr. Basagic was born June 23, 1924, in Monongah and was the son of the late Hasan Basagic and Rose Eslary Basagic. 

He was a retired pipefitter and welder and a former coalminer.  He served in the South Pacific as a tail gunner in the USMC during World War II and was a sergeant.  He graduated from Monongah High School and was a member of Monongah Baptist Church.  He was a member of the United Mine Workers Local No. 31, the Steamfitters and Pipefitters Local NO. 152 and the Marine Corp League. 

On March 20, 1948, he married Anne Vukovich at Monongah Baptist Church, who survives.  

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Janet Ann Basagic of Fountain Hills, AZ; three sons, David J. Basagic of Franklin, Mark M. Basagic of Franklin, Mark M. Basagic of Petersburg and John J. Basagic of Fairmont, who was his father's personal caregiver for 17 years; two sisters, Goldie Myers of Monongah and Julia Costalac of Enterprise; five grandsons, Morgan Basagic and his wife, Jessica of Moorefield, Neil Basagic and his wife, Kimberly of Petersburg, Julian Basagic of Franklin, Grant Parker Basagic of Petersburg and David B. Cain of Fairmont.  

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Greta Rose Cain; three brothers, Hassan, John and Richard; and an infant sister, Doris. 

The Rev. David S. Huckins conducted the funeral Saturday at Monongah Baptist Church.  Burial was a Mohammedan Cemetery, Monongah.

Iva Sponaugle, 99

A memorial service for Iva Lambert Sponaugle will be held Saturday, March 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Walnut Street United Methodist Church, Franklin.

Iva Lambert Sponaugle, 99, passed away at Parsons Residential Care in Chesapeake, VA, on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.

Roy Lee Eckard 

Roy Lee Eckard, 63, of Brandywine died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, VA. 

Mr. Eckard was born Sept. 2, 1943, in Brandywine and was the son of the late Floyd "Koontz" and Kerneda Cleo Rexorde Eckard. 

He had retired from electrical construction, and had worked for Rockingham Construction and Wampler Foods.  HE attended Brandywine schools.  He enjoyed gardening.   

Surviving are two daughters, Lori Ann Eckard Grogg of Bridgewater, VA; three sons, Steven Dwayne Eckard of Plymouth, IN, Charles Linton Eckard of Koontz Lake, IN, and Roy Lee Eckard, Jr., of Bridgewater, VA; a brother, James "Roger" Eckard of Clover Hill, VA; and five grandchildren, Christopher William Grogg, Stephanie Kerneda Eckard, Matthew Linton Eckard, Jacklyn Ann Eckard and Nathaniel Hunter Cook.  

He also was preceded in death by one brother, Verlin "Dick" Eckard. 

The Rev. Lucas Cook conducted the funeral Sunday in the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine.

Riley V. Smith, 90

Riley Vaden Smith, 90, of Dayton, VA, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mr. Smith was born July 30, 1916, in Sugar Grove and was the son of the late Martin and Maggie Puffenbarger smith. 

HE served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.  He was a farmer most of his life and spent much of his time working on his West Virginia farm.  He enjoyed horseback trail riding and cover wagon trips with a local group.

Mr. Smith was a serviceman for Wampler Foods until retiring in 1980.  He was a past assistant scoutmaster for the Bo Scouts.  He was a lay speaker for 20 years of Andy Ridge Brethren Church in West Virginia and was an active member of Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren, where he served in many capacities.  

On April 6, 1947, he married the former Juanita Shiflet, who survives. 

He is also survived by three sons, Gareth Wayne Smith of Weyers Cave, VA, Stephen Dale Smith of Mount Solon, VA, and Dennis Leigh Smith of Dayton, VA; two daughters, Cheryl Smith Payne of Harrisonburg, VA, and Karen Smith Snyder of Dayton,  VA; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. John Jantzi conducted a memorial service Sunday at Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren.  Burial was private.

Roy William Edmonds, Jr.

Roy William Edmonds, Jr., 68, of Richfield, UT, passed away Feb. 26, 2007, at home in Richfield, UT. 

He was born Oct. 21, 1938, in Salt Lake City, UT, to the late Roy William, Sr., and Margaret Audrey Eldridge Edmonds. 

On July 25, 1964, in Franklin, he married Bethea Fay "Beth" Johnston, who survives.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple on April 26, 1977.  They were married for 42 years. 

He graduated from Jordan High School and later served a LDS mission to West Mexico Mission.  HE served in the US Army during the Vietnam War.  After marrying, he got BS and MS degrees from BYU.  HE then went to Colorado State University and did all the requirements for a PHD but writing of his dissertation.  In 2003, he retried from the BLM.  He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, hunting birds and training dogs.  His love for training dogs enabled him to form many lasting friendships.  He will be remembered for a keen sense of humor that brought laughter and a smile to all.  

Also surviving are three sisters, Jalene (Terry) Ivie, Gilbert, AZ, Kathy (Tony) Lupica, Canyon Country, CA, and Cheryl Rushton, Salt Lake City, UT; three brothers Nolan (Claudia) Burton, South Jordan, UT, Lyle (Lorrell) Burton, Orem, UT, and Michael (Christina) Burton, Lehi, UT; an aunt, Ruth (Willis) Newbold, Salt Lake City, UT: and many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were held Friday at the Magleby Mortuary Chapel, Richfield, UT.  Burial was in the Richfield City Cemetery with military rites by the V.F.W. Sevier Post #5050.
