W. Ernest "Ernie" Mullenax

William Ernest "Ernie: Mullenax, 78, of Petersburg died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 at his home.

Born Oct. 29, 1925, in Pansy, he was the son of the late Roland C. Mullenax and Bessie C. (Harman) Mullenax. 

Mr. Mullenax was the owner and operator of Mullenax Refrigerated Transport.  He was the founder of the country Store Opry in Pansy 37 years ago where he "slaved over a hot guitar" every other Saturday night. 

He was a charter member of the Grant-Hardy Camp of GIdeons International and a long time member of the St. John's United Methodist church where he served with distinction on various committees.  He was an honorary member of the Landes Ruritan Club.  He found great pleasure in farming his spread down at the Snell place.  Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Anna (Harman) Mullenax; two daughters, Diana K. (Mullenax) Simmons and husband Allen of Harrisonburg, VA, and Peggy L. (Mullenax) Geary and husband, jay of Petersburg; one grandson, Lucas R. Geary; one sister, Jean Judy of Gordonsville, VA; two brothers, Carl Mullenax and Roy Mullenax, both of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Robert Mullenax, and one brother, Bruce Mullenax. 

Funeral services were held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Chapel, Petersburg, with the Revs. Gary Phillips and Edgar Null officiating. 

Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.  Memorials may be made to the St. John's United Methodist Church Building Fund or Gideons International.  

Ruby B. Mitchell

Ruby Belle Dollars Mitchell, 91, a resident of Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at the nursing home. 

Mrs. Mitchell was born June 30, 1912, in Levelland, TX, and was the daughter of the late Will Dollars and Dilla Dollars. 

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Franklin. 

Her husband, Raymond Curtis Mitchell, Sr., preceded her in death June 27, 1997. 

She is survived by a step-daughter, Odette Mitchell of Hemet, CA; three stepsons, Charles A. Mitchell of McGaheysville, VA,  Raymond "Curtis" Mitchell, Jr. of Franklin and Tom Mitchell of Port Republic, VA; four step grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.  

Mrs. Mitchell was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

Elder John Hartman conducted a graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Nursing Home. 

Arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. 

Mary E. Temple

Mary Elizabeth Temple, 94, of Brandywine, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Eden Pines Assisted Living Center in Hagerstown, MD.

Mrs. Temple was born June 15, 1909 in Keezletown, VA and was a daughter of the late Grattan W. Tutwiler and Fanny Coffman Tutwiler. 

She retired as a nurse from Rockingham Memorial Hospital and also had worked in Hagerstown, MD, and Berkeley Springs.  She graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1930 and the RMH School of nursing in 1933.  She was a member of the Franklin Chapter #1380 O.E.S. and the Riverside United Methodist Church in Brandywine. 

Her husband, Alva D. Temple preceded her in death Dec. 15, 1983. 

She is survived by two sons, Carlton D. temple of Falling Waters and Harry Lee TEmple of Brandywine; two sisters, Sue Tutwiler of Richmond, VA, and Abigail Lunsford of Glasgow, VA; three grandchildren, Dana L. Temple of Midland TX, and Alton D. Temple of Brandywine; three great-grandchildren, Taylor L. Stevens-Temple of Hagerstown, MD, and Alexis L. Temple and Barley Temple, both of Midland, TX. 

Also preceding her in death were one brother, George Tutwiler; and two sisters, Anna Lee Holsinger and Frances Depoy.

The Rev. Jerry Smith will conduct a memorial service 11 a.m. Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial will be at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine.  

Memorial donations may be made to Alva D. Temple Baseball Field, Brandywine, WV. 

Stanley Arbaugh 

Stanley Robert "Bob" Arbaugh, 79 of 86 Summercrest Avenue, Waynesboro, VA, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at Augusta Medical Center. 

Mr. Arbaugh was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Circleville and was a son of the late Gordon and Annie Wimer Arbaugh. 

He ws in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1948.  He worked in Beltsville, MD, for Bryan Moving and Storage as a truck driver, and retired in 1972.  He lived in Columbia, MD, until he moved to Waynesboro, VA, two years ago.  He was a musician who loved playing the guitar and banjo and he wrote many songs.  His artistic talents included painting, ceramics, and he was a published poet. 

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Dorothy M. Arbuagh, children, Edith Helsley of Edinburgh, VA, Judy McDonaldson of Waynesboro, VA Carolyn Stevens of Goshen, Larry Arbaugh of Oak Grove, KY, Rocky Arbaugh, of Owings Mill, MD, Alan Arbaugh, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Gary Arbaugh, of Hughesville, MD; four sisters, Mary Wimer of Moorefield, , Dorothy Whetzel of Dorcas, Martha Keplinger of Petersburg and Betty Whetzel of Romney; 32 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.  

A service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro, VA by Rev. Greg Mayo.  Burial followed in Riverview Cemetery.
