Rose V. Vance,

Rose Virginia Champ Vance, 81, of Seneca Rocks died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Mrs. Vance was born June 30, 1925 in Seneca Rocks, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Champ and Ethel Alt Champ. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Vance, April 11, 1999. 

Survivors include two sisters, Thelma Rohrbaugh of Petersburg and Ruby Dolly of Medley; two brothers, Dayton Champ of Lahmansville and Darrell Champ, a resident of Grant Nursing Home in Petersburg; a grandson, Jason Vance of Columbia, MD; and several nieces and nephews. 

She also was preceded in death by one son, Harold Gene Vance; four sisters, Verdie Hedrick, Dora Cooper Mauzy, Evelyn Boggs and Joy Basinger; and seven brothers, Earl Champ, Quentin Champ, infant Paul Champ, John Champ, Harlan Champ, Merrill Champ and Bryson Champ.

The Rev. Harold Cullers conducted the funeral Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at  Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville.

Jonah A. "Andy" Guy

Jonah Andrew "Andy" Guy, 42, of Franklin died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, on U.S. Route 33 West in Brandywine as result of a single car accident from a falling tree due to the snowstorm. 

Mr. Guy was born Nov. 22, 1964, Harrisonburg, VA, and was a son of the late Charles William Guy and Dorothy Mae Wright Guy.

He was a technician at RR Donnelley & Sons, where he worked for 20 years.  He graduated from Franklin High School in 1983 and was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Tracey Renee Fisher Guy; a daughter, Mackenzie Guy of Franklin; a son, Justin Guy of Franklin; and three brothers, Kevin Wright, Phillip Wright and Sherman Wright, all of Franklin.

 The Revs. Carl Tribett and Jackie Dorsey will conduct the funeral today at 2 p.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Franklin.

Dr. King Seegar, Jr., 97

Dr. John King Beck Emory Seegar, Jr., 97, died on FEb. 26, 2007, in Towson, MD. 

Dr. Seegar was born Oct. 25, 1909, in Baltimore, MD< to the late J. King B.E. Seegar, SR., MD, and Elizabeth Bosley Seegar. 

He was proud of his Maryland heritage, reaching back to 1658 on the Eastern Shore, of each of his much--loved hcildren, and of the fact that from 1900 to the present there has been a J.K.B. E. Seegar in the practice of medicine. 

Dr. Seegar attended Boys' Latin, St. Stephen's College of Columbia University, 1933 (now Bard College), and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, 1937.  He did his internship and residency in Obstetrics at University  Hospital Baltimore, MD, and was chief resident in Gynecology at Bon Secours Hospital, 1941-42.  

A WWII veteran, Dr. Seegar served lieutenant to captain as an Army physician with the 142nd base hospital for the university of Maryland in the Fiji Islands, South Pacific theatre, then in India, and at Oak Ridge, TN, with the Manhattan Project, 1942-46. 

He entered private practice in Obstetrics & Gynecology 1946-1966, during which time he was on the visiting staff of four hospitals, served as Chief of Obstetrics at two hospitals and taught at Johns Hopkins and the university of Maryland.  He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology.  He received wide recognition for a course of emergency obstetrics, which he developed and taught, including a version he taught for the Maryland State Police.  

In 1966, Dr. Seegar retired from private practice and joined the Maryland State Health Department to develop the Obstetrical Family Program, retiring in 1982 as deputy director of preventative medicine.

During those years, he enthusiastically joined his active family in outdoor sports and travel. 

Dr. Seegar devoted much time to his activities in the patriotic society Sons of the American Revolution, for several years as as Surgeon General and in 1987, was presented with the society's coveted Minute Man Award.  He was a lifelong member of St. David's Episcopal Church, Roland Park. 

He will be remembered by all for his gift of storytelling, his love of fmaily and country, and his full head of hair. 

He is survived by his beloved wife, jane ISabelle Slick Seegar, whom he amrried in 1942. 

Also surviving are four children and their spouses, MR. and Mrs. James M. Seegar of Baltimore, MD, MR. and Mrs. Arthur Walker of Richmond, VA, DR. and Mrs. William S. Seegar of Glen Arm, MD, and Dr. and Mrs. J. King B.E. Seegar, III, of Franklin; five grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dr. Howard W. Jones of Norfolk, VA, and Denver, CO; and a sister, Elizabeth B. Seegar. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Dr. Georgeanna S. Jones, in 2005.

James "Jim" Underwood

James Christian "Jim" Underwood, 62, of Franklin died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at his home. 

He was born Jan. 3, 1945, at Sydney, NY, and was the son of the late James R. Underwood and Marie Sorenson Underwood. 

Mr. Underwood was a carpenter, Stone mason, educator and inventor.  He was a member of the Mountain Institute Board of Directors and a Stone Foundation member. 

He is survived by his wife, Janet Pidacks Underwood of Franklin; one son, Yar Underwood, and his wife, Jenna of Marlboro, MD; two brothers, Thom Underwood of San Diego, CA and Kai Underwood of Rowayton, CN. 

His first grandchild is expected in July. 

Also preceding him in death was a brother, David Underwood. 

Following cremation, Underwood's ashes will be sprinkled on the Spruce Knob Campus of Mountain Institute. 

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Underwood residence in Franklin.

Icie V. Botkin, 90

Icie Virginia (Varner) Botkin, 90, resident of Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center, died Sunday morning, Feb. 25, 2007 in Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, VA. 

She was born March 14, 1916, in Sugar Grove, a daughter of George P. and Ammanda (Eckard) Varner. 

Prior to retirement, Mrs. Botkin was employed as a nurse's aide by Western State Hospital.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Botkin, on Oct. 10, 1985. 

Family members include three sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Ray and Dale Botkin of Verona, VA, Larry Dean and Pat Botkin of Staunton, VA, and Sherrill Wayne and Sandra Botkin of Churchville, VA; a daughter-in-law, Audrey Botkin of Staunton, VA; 11 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. 

She also was preceded in death by a son Robert E. "Bobby" Botkin; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Howdyshell Botkin; two sisters, Stella Varner and Gracie Varner; and a brother, Virgil Varner. 

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday at the Henry Funeral Home Chapel, Staunton, VA, by the Revs. Cecil Bradfield and George Yoder.  Burial followed in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

E. Guy Alexander

Edwin Guy Alexander of Davis, CA, died Feb. 22, 2007.

Mr. Alexander was was the seventh of 12 children parented by George William and Ola Vivian Alexander.  His brothers were Foster, Roy, Ernest, Warnie, Marvin, Raymond and Dolan. His sisters were Hazel, Grace Eva Mae and Neva.  He was born Aug. 9, 1921, near Kline.

He attended Mowery (Main Mountain) Elementary School and Franklin High School and the Baltimore Construction Inst. in Maryland.  

Like many men at that time, Mr. Alexander was drafted into the army. He began his service in October of 1942 and was given medical training at Camp Grant in Illinois and desert training from Camp Hahn in California, as well as other training in Tennessee and North Carolina.  In February of 1944, he was a member of the largest Convoy to cross the Atlantic. On D-Day, June 6, he was part of the historic amphibious assault and landed on Utah Beach at 4:00 p.m. He was also involved in the Battle of the Bulge, the Danube River and Rhine River campaigns. He found himself in southern Germany in May of 1945 when the war ended.  He returned to civilian life the following year and settled in Baltimore, MD..

He married Mary Hedrick and had one son, Donald.  In 1957, the family moved to Harrisonburg, VA, where Mr. Alexander built his own home, worked as a construction foremen and became a Deacon in the United Church of Christ. 

After his divorce, he met and married Gertrude Prater, living in Oklahoma and then in California.  He and his wife spent much of their time traveling over most of the United States.  

He was a member of the Davis VFW #6949, Odd Fellows Yolo Lodge #169 and Rebekahs in Davis and the Church of Christ in Woodland.  He also served as a hall manager and was a Council Chaplain for the United Commercial Travelers of American in Virginia.  

Surviving are three sisters, Grace, Eva Mae and Neva; three brothers Warnie, Marvin and Raymond; two grandsons Jeffrey and Ronald Alexander of Virginia, and a close friend, Emma Driscol of Davis CA.   

Mr. Alexander was preceded death by his wife, Gertrude; son Donald; his mother and father; his sister, Hazel; his brothers, Foseter, Roy, Ernest and Dolan; and his four brothers-in-laws, Harry Mitchell, Edwin Dunkle, Alton Hatton and Ellis Mallow. . 

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Wiscombe's DAvis Funeral Chapel, Davis, CA.  Interment followed at Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery in Dixon, CA.
