Robert Earl Rhodes

Robert Earl "Bob" Rhodes, 62, of Seneca Rocks, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at the Grant County Nursing Home, where he had lived since may 15, 1995.

Mr. Rhodes was born Sept. 3, 1939, in Glady and was a son of the late McClellan Rhodes and Della Baker Rhodes.

He was formerly employed at General Motors in Baltimore, MD, and had worked at Adell Polymers, Inc., in Petersburg for several years. He was a member of the Glady Church of the Brethren and Attended Pleasant View United Methodist Church in Seneca Rocks.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rella Cooper Rhodes; a son, Richard W. Rhodes of Seneca rocks; a daughter, Rita A. Rhodes, Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister, Della Mae Cork of Stuarts Draft, VA; two brothers, Roger Rhodes and Roy Rhodes, both of Glady; two grandsons, Cory and Tyler Rhodes; and several nieces and nephews.

Chaplain Paul O'Gorek and Pastor Barbara K. Rexroad conducted the funeral at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was in the Cooper family cemetery in Seneca rocks.

Rubie C. Sites

Rubie Catherine Sites, 81, of Riverton, died Tuesday, Feb 19, 2002, at Nella's Nursing Home in Crystal Springs.

Mrs. Sits was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Macksville and was a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Armentrout and Margie Harper Armentrout.

She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught in Randolph and Pendleton counties for 30 years. She was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of High Rock United Methodist Church, North Fork Rescue Squad/Paramedic, and American Legion Post No. 183.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Louise Marshall of Blue Grass, VA, Nancy McCarty of Kensington, MD and Linda Judy of Riverton; a son, Jerry D. Moore of Franklin; three sisters, Carrie Wetsch, Elkins, Ann Armentrout of Front Royal, VA, and Jean Wimer of Riverton; four brothers, Arthur Armentrout and Ray Armentrout, both of Seneca rocks, Guy Armentrout, Cherry Grove and John Armentrout of Columbus, IN; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pastors Rebecca Bennett and Barbara Rexroad conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Saturday at High Rock United Methodist Church. Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Fork Rescue Squad or High Rock United Methodist Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

 

Stella S. McGuinness, 87

Stella Catherine Simmons Koontz McGuinness, 87, formerly of Franklin, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at the home of her son in Payson, UT.

Mrs. McGuinness was born April 11, 1914, in Franklin and was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Jennie Florence Rexrode Simmons.

In August of 1933, she married Edgar William Koontz, who preceded her in death in June, 1974.

Surviving are one son, Norman Koontz, of Payson, UT; two brothers, Claude Simmons of Franklin and Leo Simmons of Brandywine; one sister Glenna Harper of Dayton, VA; four grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

 

Clyde Vance, 82

Clyde Vance, 82, of Berryville, VA, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at his residence.

Mr. Vance was born June 7, 1919, in Onego and was a son of the late Jason Vance and Emmatie Long Vance.

He was a biology researcher for Fish and Wildlife Services in the US Department of Interior. He retired in 1984 after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Clarke county Ruritan Club and was a member of the Apple Valley Community Church.

On Aug. 4, 1944, in Washington, DC, he married Olive K. Vance, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Delores Marrow and Carleen Puglisi, both of Winchester, VA; one brother, Harvey Vance of Franklin; two sisters, Virgie Torkelson of Union Bridge, MD, and Lucy Vance of Harrisonburg, VA; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Rev. Richard Bell conducted the funeral at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Enders and Shirley Funeral Home Chapel in Berryville, VA. Burial was in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum, Frederick County, Va.

Roy Allen Jameson

Roy Allen Jameson, 44, of Franklin, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Jameson was born Feb. 3, 1958, in Pomona CA, and was a son of Vernon Michael Jameson, Sr., and Phyllis Rhodes Jameson of Bellflower, CA.

He retired from the U.S. Navy on Oct. 31, 1996, with 20 years of service. He was a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife, Karen L. McManus Jameson; two sons, Cody Allen Jameson and Jeremy Cole Jameson, both of Franklin; two sisters, Diana Griffith and Cricket Jameson, both of California; and two brothers, Vernon Michael Jameson, Jr., of Seattle, WA, and Warren Wayne Jameson of Grand Junction, CO.

Pastor Mike Watson conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with full military honors provided by the Sugar Grove naval Base.

Sylvia Mae Huffman

Sylvia Mae (Lambert) Huffman, 85, of Franklin, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at her home.

Mrs. Huffman was born June 15, 1916, in Smith Creek and was a daughter of the late Lafayette Lambert and Sarah Elizabeth Bennett Lambert. After her mother's death, she was raised by Phoebe and Bert Lambert, her aunt and uncle, and John and Laura Nelson.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church.

On Oct. 7, 194?, she married Earlie Albert Huffman, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughter, Rettie Mae Waggy of Franklin, Sarah Fay Harper of Bridgewater, VA, Mildred Florence Jennings of Peterstown, and Rose Elva Adams of Wellsburg; two sons, Albert Wayne Huffman and Ralph Ora Huffman, both of Franklin; two sisters, Mildred Mitchell and Dessie Hedrick, both of Franklin; a brother, Byron Lambert of Bridgewater, VA; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one son and one grandson on March 3, 1979, Earl Lafayette Huffman and Roy Lee Huffman; two brothers, Jeff Lambert and A. Green Lambert; and one half-sister, Mazie Vandevander.

Pastor James A. Phares Rev Johnathan Jennings and Elder Willard Huffman conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the George Dice Scholarship Fund at Pendleton County High School.

 

Edward Kuykendall, 84

Edward Kuykendall, 84, of Moorefield, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the Winchester Medical Center, in Winchester, VA.

Mr. Kuykendall was born in 1917 in Hardy County and was a son of the late Edward and Nannie Mongold Kuykendall.

He was a member of Bass United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a brother, coy Kuykendall of Upper Tract, and a half sister, Beulah Fitzwater of Petersburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

The Revs. Ted Osgood and Danny Sterns conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home in Moorefield. Burial was at the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield.

 

Justin Curtis Mines, 19

Justin Curtis Mines, age 19, of Singers Glen, VA, died Thursday, Feb. 21,2002, at Elkins, NC, from a job-related accident.

He was born Oct. 21, 1982, at Harrisonburg, VA, a son of French Timothy and Debra Lynn (Bennett) Mines.

He was a member of the Totten Chapel United Methodist Church. He graduated from Turner Ashby High School class of 2000. At Turner Ashby High School, he was a member of the Future Farmers of America. He was active in 4-H and showed livestock at Rockingham County Fair. After graduation, he joined the Turner Ashby Young Farmers. At Massanutten Technical Center, he earned a degree in welding. While attending high school, he worked part-time at Silver Lake Welding Service, Inc., after graduation, he worked fulltime. He was an EMT, being a member of the Singers Glen Volunteer Fire Department for two years and a member of the singers Glen volunteer Rescue Squad for three years.

He is survived by his parents, Tim and Debbie Mines of Singers Glen, VA; maternal grandparents, Paul and Nancy Bennett of Moyers,; paternal grandparents, Jim and Helen Mines of Dayton, VA; a fiancée, Kelly Shipp of Linville, VA; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by an infant sister, Jessica Mines, and his great-grandparents, Curtis and alpha Bennett; French and Fannie Moates; Ida and John Cunningham and Annabelle and Brock Mines.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb 24, 2002, at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, by the Rev. Dave Boger and Rev. Charles Townsend. Burial was at the Totten Chapel Cemetery.

John David Hammer, 74

John David Hammer, 74, of McDowell, VA, died Sunday, Feb 24, 2002, at the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, VA, where he had been a patient since Feb. 9.

Born Feb. 25, 1927, at McDowell, VA, he was the only son of the late Winfield and Maggie (Varner) Hammer.

He was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club.

In 1945, during his senior year at McDowell High School, he entered the US Navy, where he served two years. After being honorably discharged, he returned home to farming. For 30 years, he was employed at Barnes Lumber company, now Taylor Ramsey Lumber company, where he was a manger for 27 years. He retired in 1992.

Surviving are a wife of 47 years, Vertura (Malcom) Hammer; a daughter, Patricia Lee Hammer of McDowell, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, John Maynard and Kim Hammer of McDowell, VA; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arna Lee Pullin of Staunton, Va, and Mary Sweitzer of Monterey, VA; two nephews; three great nephews; and several cousins, including some living in Pendleton county.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, VA, with the Revs. Dave Boger and Jerry Ginn officiating. Burial was in the McKendree Cemetery.

Albert Joseph, Jr., 62

Albert "Bub" Joseph, Jr., 62 of Harrisonburg, VA, died on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Joseph was born Nov. 24, 1939, in Brandywine and was the son of the late Albert and Mary Huffman Joseph.

He attended the Augusta Military Academy and moved to Harrisonburg, VA, from West Virginia in 1959. He was a member of the Freelandia Bible Church in Broadway, VA, and worked for 41 years at the Owens-Brockway plant in Harrisonburg, VA, as an assistant foreman.

He was an avid outdoorsman who took several trips to different states and Canada to hunt and fish. Besides his love for the outdoors, if he wasn't working or spending time with his family, he loved to sit down with a good book.

On Aug. 30, 1959, he married Doris Clatterbuck, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Albert "Joey" Joseph, III, and his wife, Cindy of Harrisonburg, VA; three sisters, Betty Curry of Harrisonburg, VA, Ramona Hummel of Bridgewater, VA, and Frankie Knicley of Mt. Solon, VA; and three grandchildren, Jordan, Justin and Jenna Joseph, all of Harrisonburg, VA.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA, by Dr. Delmar Shoemaker. Burial was in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Treva M. Pennybacker, 85

Treva Mae Pennybacker, 85, of Bridgewater, VA, died on Sunday Feb. 24, 2002, at Bridgewater Home, where she had been a patient for the past seven years.

Mrs. Pennybacker was born May 2, 1916, in Franklin and was a daughter of the late Jesse H. and Mary V. Propst Moyers.

She had cooked at several restaurants, and retired from Shen-Mar poultry plant.

She was united in marriage on April 1, 1934, to Scott Pennybacker, who died January 9. 1968.

She is survived by three sons, Charles Pennybacker of Dayton, VA, Carroll and his wife, Jackie Pennybacker of Harrisonburg, VA, and Bill and his wife, Diana Pennybacker of Franklin; one daughter, Shirley Propst of Dayton, VA; one sister, Nora Hartman of Franklin; six grandchildren, Deborah Helmick, Robin Garrett, Shawn Pennybacker, Valerie Pennybacker, Matthew Pennybacker and Heidi Pennybacker; and fever great-grandchildren, Christopher Cubbage, Jonathan Cubbage, Justin Garrett, Monica Garrett and Samantha Garrett.

A funeral service was conducted at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, VA, Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carroll Goodridge officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin, at 4 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to charity of choice.
