Frances Garnett Morton

Frances Morton, age 91, born in Locust Dale, VA, on Sept. 21, 1917, the daughter of the late Selden Hunter and Nettie Baird Garnett, departed this life on Jan. 4, 2009.

She was a resident of the Sunnyside Retirement Home in Harrisonburg, VA.

She was married to the late Rev. Ferdinand “Pete” Morton, Jr., former minister of the Circleville Presbyterian Charge, from 1970 to 1975.

Surviving are three sons, Peter H. Morton and wife, Marilyn of Finksburg, MD, Garnett F. and wife, Lucille, and Caperton “Capie” and wife, Susan, all of Orange, VA; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Susan Frayser.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were conducted in the Orange Presbyterian Church and interment was in the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Oak Park, VA.

The Mortons were very loved by all that had the privilege of knowing them during their stay in the North Fork area.

Preddy Funeral Home of Orange, VA, was in charge of arrangements.

Edna “Annie” Turner

Edna “Annie” Turner, 82, of Pendleton Manor and formerly of Cabins passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born Oct. 30, 1926, at Seneca Rocks and was the daughter of the late Walter Nelsob, Sr., and Cora Alt Nelson.

She was a homemaker, attended school at the Miller Schoolhouse and was a member of the United Brethren Church, Seneca Rocks.

Her husband, Marvin Eston Turner, preceded her in death in 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Delores Keplinger and husband, Loney, Jr., of Maysville, and Marlene Ours of Cabins; one son, Roland Turner and wife, Carol of Cabins; two sisters, Hester Miller and husband, Hoover Miller of Seneca Rocks, and Dora Whetzel and husband, Isaac of Seneca Rocks; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Maxine Ours; four brothers, Burl Nelson, Oney Nelson, Alva Nelson and Walter Nelson, Jr.; and two sisters, Pearlie Burgess and Ninnie Ours.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Joseph Eversole officiating.  Burial was in the Turner Family Cemetery, Cabins.

Memorial donations may be made to Pendleton County Nursing Home, Pendleton County Rescue Squad or Marlene Ours Medical Fund.

Mary P. Murphy, 92

Mary Phillis Ruddle Murphy, 92, of Franklin departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

She was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Franklin and was a daughter of the late Phil Ruddle and Stella Warner Ruddle.

She was a lifelong member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church, where she had been active in the Women of the Church.  In previous years, she was a mail carrier for the Deer Run and Smith Creek communities.

Her husband, Dick Byron Murphy, a well-known coach and teacher at Brandywine Grade School for over 30 years, preceded her in death on May 13, 1963.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a great-great-niece.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Orland R. Dorsey, and two infant sisters.

A funeral service was held Monday at the Franklin Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kevin Hand presiding.  Interment was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

Dorothy M. Dove, 75

Dorothy Marie Griffith Dove, 75, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Feb. 18, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born Oct. 13, 1933, in Rockingham County, VA, and was a daughter of the late Harry Griffith and Virginia May Griffith Whetzel.

She was raised by her grandmother, the late Annie May.

Mrs. Dove was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Congregation in Harrisonburg, VA.

On Aug. 27, 1948, she married Boyd L. Dove, who survives.

Also surviving are eight children, Sandra Sue Cameron of Harrisonburg, VA, Boyd L. Dove, Jr., and wife, Melissa of Fairfield, PA, Carl L. Dove of Keyser, Elizabeth Ann Barb an husband, Ralph of Lost City, Joyce L. Hewitt and husband, Courchnesne of Thurmont, MD, Sharon A. Haney and husband, Greg of Harrisonburg, VA; Lisa G. McClintock and husband, Carl of Gettysburg, PA, and Michael A. Dove and friend, Donna of Harrisonburg, VA; five sisters, Peggy Sheffer of Grottoes, VA, Jeanie Moyer of Mount Crawford, VA, Karen Sites of Upper Tract, Helen Rohrbaugh of Maysville and Rosie McDorman of Dayton, VA; a brother, David “Bud” Whetzel of Moorefield; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Toby Whetzel, and a sister, Wendy Vanmeter.

The Rev. David Burrough conducted a funeral service Friday at the Grandle Funeral Home chapel in Broadway, VA.  Burial was at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mary Louise May Gaffrey

Mary Louise May Gaffrey, 56, of Franklin died Saturday, February 21, 2009, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born Sept. 24, 1952, at Fort Seybert and was the daughter of the late Roy Elmer May and Myrtle Dahmer May.

She was a 1969 graduate of Franklin High School and was Brethren by faith.

Her husband, Francis Jerome Gaffrey, preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1984.

She is survived by two sons, Jeremy Gaffrey of Issaquah, WA, and Eric Mullenax of Franklin; one brother, Steve May of Franklin; and one grandson, Blake Alexander Tullos.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Bobby May; and one sister, Barbara Wimer.

Funeral services were private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Grover Coffman, 88

Grover Franklin Coffman, 88, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Avante at Harrisonburg, VA.

Born in Raphine, VA, on Jan. 6, 1921, he was the son of the late Clinton and Grace Gibson Coffman.

He worked as a brick mason at Nielsen Construction in Harrisonburg, VA.  He served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was united in marriage in 1972 to Edna Mae Coffman of Harrisonburg, VA, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Wanda Mae Hedrick of Fort Seybert; two sons, Dwight Smith of Weyers Cave, VA, and Gary Wayne Coffman of Grottoes, VA; one sister, Margaret Shifflett of Harrisonburg, VA; three grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters and one step-grandchild.

A memorial service was conducted Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, VA, with the Rev. Wayne Wright officiating.

At Mr. Coffman’s request, his body was cremated.

Richard Vandevander, 74

Richard Harry Vandevander, 74, of Oakland, MD, and formerly of Franklin passed away Feb. 21, 2009, at Oakland Rehab Center, Oakland, MD.

Mr. Vandevander was born in Whitmer on Sep. 3, 1934, the son of the late Boyd and Verdie Nancy Lambert Vandevander.

Mr. Vandevander was a woodsman and timberman.  He attended Pendleton County Schools and was a member of the Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are two nephews, Robert Sherman and Tom Vandevander; and several cousins.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Vandevander; and one sister, Reva Sherman.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Daryl Ritchie officiating.  Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

Family will receive friends Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

Lynn Lambert, 92

Lynn Lambert, 92, of London, OH, and formerly a resident of Newark, OH, for 51 years died Feb. 19, 2009, at his home.

He was born May 28, 1916, in Riverton to the late J. Elmer and Maggie D. (Hedrick) Lambert.

Mr. Lambert was a veteran of the United States Army, faithfully serving his country during World War II in the European Theatre of operations.  Mr. Lambert was retired from the Westinghouse Corp.

His wife of 63 years, Dessie I. (Wimer) Lambert, survives.

Also surviving are a son, Wayne Lambert of Westerville, OH; two daughters, Charlotte (Richard) Hirst of London, OH, and Sharon (Tim) Rector of Troy, OH; seven grandchildren, Mark (Jill) Hirst of Hebron, KY, Kimberly Lambert of Pittsburgh, PA, David (Angie) Hirst and Amy Rector, all of Columbus, OH, Patti (Frank) Simonetta of Westerville, OH, Krista Rector of Miami, FL, and Eric (Nakesha) Hirst of Washington, DC; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, one half brother and one half sister.

A funeral service was held Monday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Gary Boggs and Rev. Carolyn Peacock officiating.  Burial followed in Newark Memorial Gardens.
