Omer Clyde Judy

Omer Clyde Judy, Jr., 91, of Monterey, VA, passed away on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

Mr. Judy was born in Circleville on May 27, 1918, the son of the late Omer C. Judy and the late Mary Hartman Judy.

He graduated Merryville College in Tennessee.  He was a member of the Blue Grass Ruritan Club and St. John Lutheran Church.  He was a World War II Navy Veteran and served in the South Pacific.

Mr. Judy was a school teacher for 32 years, having taught at Pendleton County and Highland County schools.  He retired as principal of Highland County School, Monterey, VA.

On Nov. 19, 1954, he married Dorothy Leah Rexrode, who survives in Monterey, VA.

Also surviving are a sister, Mary Jo Wilfong of Franklin; two brothers, William “Bill” Judy and wife, Sue of Keezletown, VA, and Jack Judy and wife, Ruthaleen of Franklin.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Mayo H. Judy.

Pastors Craig and Wendy Richter and Rev. Andre Crummett will conduct funeral services on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Basagic Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.  Military graveside services will be provided by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Family will receive friends on this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Eugene Wiseman, 83

Eugene R. Wiseman of Winter Haven, FL, and formerly of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away Monday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Winter Haven Hospital, FL., after a long battle of deteriorating health.

He resided at Consulate HealthCare, also in Winter Haven, FL, for the past four years.

A son of the late Burl and Lena Shifflett-Wiseman of Keezletown, VA, he was born on Sept. 10, 1926, in Rockingham County.

He lived his early life in the Keezletown, VA community.

Mr. Wiseman was a graduate of Keezletown High School.  He was a mechanic for Royal Motor Co. for 19 years and retired from Valley Implement after 20 years.  He served as a seaman first class gunner in the US Navy on the merchant ships USS John Fairfield and the USS Ocala Victory during World War II.  He was a past department commander for the State of Virginia Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1978.  He was a life member of Rion Bowman VFW Post No. 632 and a member of the American Legion Post No. 27.  He was a member of the Military Order of the Cooties and the Sunrise Church of the Brethren.

Mr. Wiseman was married on Aug. 29, 1949, to Reba Simmons, formerly of Franklin, who survives.  They were married for 61 years.

The couple moved to Harrisonburg, VA, where they resided for 48 years before moving to Winter Haven, FL, with their son, Steven, and daughter-in-law, Diann, due to his continued health issues.

Also surviving are three grandchildren, Brittany, Dallas and Haley.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial followed in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Erma May Mitchell

Erma May Mitchell, 79, of Franklin died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, at her home.

She was born Sept. 17, 1930, at Deer Run and was the daughter of the late Pearl A. Rexrode and Iscie Mae Lough Rexrode.

She had retired from Hanover Shoe and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

On Nov. 15, 1958, she married Everett P. Mitchell, who preceded her in death on July 6, 2000.

She is survived by one son, Dennis E. Mitchell and wife, Jamie of Franklin; one sister, Janet Fleisher of Washington Courthouse, OH; one brother, Herald Rexrode of Franklin; and one grandson, Jacob Dennis Mitchell of Franklin.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Rexrode.

Funeral services were held Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church at Moyers with Pastors Craig and Wendy Richter officiating.  Burial was at the Mitchell Family Cemetery near Moyers.

Dorlan G. Smith, 73

Dorlan Galen Smith, 73, a resident of Harrisonburg, VA, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Smith was born on July 7, 1936, in Reeds Creek and was the son of the late Raymond B. and Ruth M. Hammer Smith.

He was a driver for Hott’s Ag Service in Franklin from which he retired after 25 years.  He was a member of Garber’s Church of the Brethren.

On Dec. 10, 1977, he married the former Sharon Ann Sites, who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Jason M. Smith of Harrisonburg, VA, Jeffrey G. Smith of Franklin and Vickie L. Lancaster of Goldsboro, NC; one brother; one sister; two grandchildren, Shaina M. Pitsenbarger and Evan M. Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Lambert.

The Rev. Walt Crull conducted a funeral service Friday at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial was private at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.
