He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Karl, Don, Chester, Paul, Foster and infant Roy Bennett; six sisters, Eva Patterson, Ruby Burke, Merle Sites, Josie Payne and infants Violet and Ethel Bennett; and an infant grandson, John Merlin Adamson.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Pastor Duke Nelson and Pastor Rebecca L. Bennett officiating. Interment was in the Bennett Family Cemetery, Onego.

Dorothy Christian Arrowood, 87, a resident at the National Lutheran Home and Village at Rockville, MD, died at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville, MD, on Monday, Feb 7, 2011.

Born Dec. 26, 1923, in Sugar Grove, she was the daughter of the late Linnie Mae Simmons Eckard and Claude Eckard.

Mrs. Arrowood was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Sebring, FL. She served on the Hannah Altar Guild and was vice-president of the Dorcas Women’s Circle. Prior to her retirement from the nursing profession and move to Florida in 1983, she was a resident of Waynesboro, VA.

On Nov. 11, 1940, she married Andrew Lee Christian, who preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 1962. Her second husband, Jeter P. Arrowood, preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 2010.

Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Christian Tierney and husband, Michael John of Waynesboro, VA, and Sue Christian-Correll and husband, Larry of Winchester, VA; two step-daughters, Jane A. Lopez and husband, Manuel of Dutton, VA, and Audrey A. Hawkins and husband, David of Lexington, VA; and nephew, Donald L. Byers and wife, Linda of Spurger, TX.

Interment was held Saturday at Augusta Memorial Park, Waynesboro, VA, with Rev. Dr. Albert Connette officiating.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday in the chapel of the National Lutheran Home and Village, Rockville, MD, with Chaplain Tom Miller officiating.

Cora Ethel Moyers, 86, of Franklin died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at her home. Although her death was contributed to a fall, she had suffered with Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

Mrs. Moyers was born on Patterson Creek (Grant County) on March 1, 1924, to Clem and Beulah Mullenax Bennett.

As a child, the family moved to Snowy Mountain Road, Cherry Grove, where she resided until she graduated from high school in 1941. She attended Shepherd College and worked for a short while in the steel yards in Baltimore, MD. She then returned to the area and taught school in Pendleton County and Highland County, VA.

In 1950, she and her husband bought a farm eight miles south of Franklin on Rt. 220. In addition to farming, she began her career as a social worker where she worked for many years for the Pendleton County Social Service Department. In 1968, the family moved to Richmond, VA, which provided her with an opportunity to obtain her master’s degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1973. She continued her career in social work with the City of Richmond Social Service Department until her retirement in 1976. She returned to West Virginia and to the farm to care for her beloved cows and sheep. She was known not only for her love of people, but also for her love and special way with animals. In later life she and her husband bought a home on Maple Street in Franklin where she was residing at the time of her death. For the past four years she had been lovingly cared for by her friend and companion, Sharon Flinn.

Surviving are two daughters, Jeanne Marie Flinn and husband, Larry of Colonial Heights, VA, and Kathy Lynn Sponaugle and her husband, George I. Sponaugle, II; four grandchildren, Stacia Lynn Flinn, Katrina Moyers Flinn Jones, G. Isaac Sponaugle, III and Erin Brooke Sponaugle Blankenship; four great-grandchildren, Noah

Mason Jones, Jack Anndrew Jones, Brooke Elizabeth Blankenship and Emily Katherine Blankenship ; and a younger brother, Abraham Floyd Bennett of Cherry Grove.

A memorial service was conducted Friday at the Walnut Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Anderson and Stanley Kile officiating. Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

He was born On Oct. 9, 1938, in Franklin and was a son of the late Otha Carl Calhoun and Nellie Marie (Armentrout) Calhoun.

Mr. Calhoun was a 1957 graduate of Franklin High School and was a carpenter. He was a member of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and served in the US Army in 3rd infantry old guard in Fort Myer, Arlington, VA.

Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Calhoun and wife, Pam of McGaheysville, VA, and Derrick Calhoun of Timberville, VA; one daughter, Nanette Calhoun of Petersburg; one granddaughter, Nicole “Nikki” Calhoun of Upper Tract; three sisters, Patricia Harman and husband, Warren of Harrisonburg, VA, Noreen Alt and husband, Roger of Petersburg, and Judy Vandevander of Upper Tract; three brother, Jackie Calhoun and wife, Ann of

LaPlata, MD, Styrl Calhoun and wife, Evelyn, and Tony Calhoun, all of Upper Tract; and one sister-in-law, Violet Calhoun of Mt. Crawford, VA.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Pastor Rita Beeman officiating. Interment will be in Kline Cemetery, Kline, with military graveside services by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

She was born Oct. 17, 1924, at Cherry Grove and was the daughter of the late Don Cameron Mauzy and Verdie J. Lambert Mauzy.

Mrs. Selmon was a homemaker and along with her husband, owned and operated a farm. She was a member of the North Fork Church of the Brethren.

Also surviving are one son, Don A. Mauzy of Lavon, Tx; four grandchildren in Texas and California; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Mallow as a retired carpenter. He built many new homes in Canaan Valley, Timberline and surrounding areas. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, gardening and mostly spending time with his family. He was loved by all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed. He was a member of the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church.

Also surviving are four daughters, Patti Cooper, Jean (Jerry) Sebastian and Cheryl (Dana) Pennington, all of Dry Fork, and Debbie (Kevin) Lawrence of Harman; one son; Daniel (Beth) Mallow of Dry Fork; one brother,

Herbert Mallow of Mabie; one sister, Velma Ritchie of Grand River, OH; seven grandchildren, Tommy (Michele) Cooper, Sierra (Nick) Kile, Kristy Lawrence, Zach Cooper, Travis Lawrence, Daylen Pennington and Clayton Mallow; and three great-grandchildren, Alexis Cooper, Tanner Sebastian and Zayde Kile.

He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Warren Mallow; an infant daughter, Barbara Sue; two grandchildren, Casey Jean and Jesse Lee; four brother, Hancel “Hank”, Gerald, Forest and Roy Mallow; and four sisters, Myrtle Bible, Elma Haddix, Hazel Simmons and Opal Davis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church with Rev. Ric Lewellen and Sister Alice Davis officiating. Interment followed in the Buena Cemetery.

Peggy Ann Ratlief, 42, of Ft. Seybert passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

She was born in Milford, DE, the daughter of Harold Hannum of Ft. Seybert and Wanda Faye Cornish of Harrington, DE.

Mrs. Ratlief attended Harrington High School and was a member of the Church of the Brethren. She was a homemaker.

Also surviving are a daughter, Amanda Ratlief, of Ft. Seybert (age 15); a son, Robert Ratlief of Ft. Seybert (age 12); two sisters, Kimberly Faye and Crystal Lynn; and a brother, Scott Holland of Milford, DE.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Gene Shaver officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Grove Mennonite Church Cemetery, Ft. Seybert.

Mr. Depoy was born April 1, 1964, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was the son of Charlotte Whetzel Depoy and the late Weldie Revees Depoy Sr.

He was currently employed at James Madison University for the past 24 years and also worked at the Courtyard by Marriott in Harrisonburg, VA.

Also surviving are a sister, Carol A. King and husband, Charles of Franklin; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel in Killeen, TX. Burial, with full military honors, was at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.

Warren William Washington, 83, of Mount Crawford, VA, passed away Feb. 7, 2011, at Emeritus Nursing home in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Washington worked for Wayne Feeds and Ritchies Agriculture. He went on to work and retire in 2001 from the city of Harrisonburg, VA. He was proud of his service in the US Army during the Korean War, in which he received the Silver Star for his bravery and service. He continued to serve others with his membership in the Rion Bowman VFW post and the Staunton Moose lodge.

Also surviving are two sons, Weldon “Wayne” Washington and wife, Cindy “Sue” of Harrisonburg, VA and Richard Dale Washington and companion, Martha Dahmer of Mount Crawford, VA; two daughters, Joyce A. Michael of Richmond, VA, and Sandra L. Washington and companion, Delane Drummond of Penn Laird, VA; a brother, Jerry Washington and wife, Lois of Grottoes, VA; three sisters, Judy Custer and husband, Joe of Mount Clinton, VA, Arminna Fitzwater of Mount Crawford, VA, and Sue Long and husband, Larry of McGaheysville, VA five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Kyger Funeral Home chapel in Harrisonburg, VA, with Pastor Michael Fallin officiating. Burial followed in the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.

Mr. Hedrick was a life long farmer. He was a member, past secretary, and past master of the Wakatomika Masonic Lodge #108. He was active in the River View 100 bushel corn club. He will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness in sending cards.

Surviving are a brother, Dale (Kim) Hedrick of Warsaw, OH; two nephews, Jon Hedrick of Canton, OH, and Clinton Hedrick of Warsaw, OH; two nieces, Jodi (Jim) Nash of Albany, NY, and Kali Kent of Coshocton, OH; a great-nephew, Walter Dice Nash; a great-niece, Ellie Grace Nash; four uncles Joe Hedrick of Seneca Rocks, Roy (Dovie) Hedrick of Harrisonburg, VA, Hugh Hedrick of Coshocton, OH, and Wright Harper of Riverton; and an aunt, Ella Griffith of Arlington, VA.

Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw, OH, with Pastor Monica Huntsman officiating. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery at Warsaw, OH. A Masonic memorial service was held Wednesday at the funeral home.

He was an engineer in the U.S. Navy Air Corp and retired on June 30, 1970, after 20 years of service. After his time in the service, he worked several jobs in the community.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Ava, Elva and Evelyn; and three brothers, Quenton, Kenneth and Edwin.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, VA, with Pastor Randy Cosner officiating.

Lucille M. Louk Harper, 89 of Buckhannon went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Jesse Thurman and Mary Elizabeth Wymer Louk.

She operated the Solo Station in Buckhannon from 1978 to 1985. She worked for the Pendleton County Aging Services until her retirement, when she moved back to Upshur County with her family. She was a member of the Sunset CEOS and was Pendleton County Bell in 1989 and Upshur County Bell in 2003. She was member of the Macedonia UM Church.

Her second husband, Richard Mark Harper, preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1991. Her first husband, Ray Fawley, died Dec. 16, 1991.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary and husband, Joe Carpino of Buckhannon, Judy and husband, John Haddix of Oakwood Village, OH, and Sharon and husband, Clyde Lantz of Buckhannon; one son, Ronald Fawley and special friend, Sharon McQuain of Buckhannon; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Fawley of Buckhannon; 11 grandchilden, Joseph Carpino, II, Rosa Shaver, John Haddix, II, Jennifer Adams, Chris “Bubba” Stanton, Marie Stanton, Clyde Lantz, II, Rachel “Ali” Henley, Teresa Fawley, Mia Burr and Kelley Estes; 13 greatgrandchildren,

Jordan and Seth Shaver, Mathew, Creek and Haylee Stanton, Zach, Abby and Jayme Lantz, Sierra Hadley, Jacob Ham, Elizabeth Ross, Thomas McEnaney and Weatherly Burr; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Roger and Bobby Fawley; three brothers, Emory, Grover and Claude Louk; and one sister, Belvie Louk.

Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel, Buckhannon, with Pastor Ron Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Upshur County Memorial Park.
