Maxine M. Moyers

Maxine Myrtle Moyers, 84, of Frostburg, MD, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at WMHS Braddock Campus.

Mrs. Moyers was born April 21, 1923, in Albright and was the daughter of the late John and Amanda Uphold Pullum.

She was a homemaker and attended the George's Creek Adult Day Care Center.

Her husband, Raymond J. Moyers Sr., preceded her in death.

Surviving are a daughter, Debra E. Loar of Loartown, MD; a brother, Joseph Pullum of Confluence, PA; a sister, Grace Waller of Manassas, VA; three grandchildren, Tony Spiker, Chrissie Spiker and Jesse Moyers and wife, Melissa; six great-grandchildren, Conner, Kayley, Colton, Lacey, Chance and Tarah;  six great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Susie Moyers. 

She was also preceded in death by one son, raymond J. Moyers, Jr.; one grandson, Wayne A. Moyers; and two sisters, Josephine Wilson and Martha Lewis.

The Rev. George M. Harpold conducted the funeral Saturday at the Smith Creek Church of the Brethren in Franklin. Burial was in the Moyers Family Cemetery in Franklin.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., Frostburg, MD, and Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

William H. VanMeter

William Henry VanMeter, 82, of Upper Tract died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

Mr. VanMeter was born May 11, 1925, in Landis and was the son of the late Sammy Harrison VanMeter and Mary E. Fool VanMeter.

He had been employed at Kessel Sawmill, Walker Manufacturing, Ethan Alan and had served as the Mill Run District Constable. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

His wife, Nora Belle George VanMeter, preceded him in death Oct. 30, 1992. They were married April 11, 1966.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Shreve of Franklin; two sons, William "Bill" VanMeter of Harrisonburg, VA, and Roger Grimm of Woodstock, VA; a sister, Edna Grimm of Timberville, VA; and two grandsons, Josh Shreve and Willie VanMeter.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters.

The Rev. Rob Borror will conduct the funeral Tuesday at Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Upper Tract with military honors by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

John C. Smith, 83

John Clyde Smith, 83, of Head Waters, VA, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at the McGuire V.A. Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Sugar Grove and was the son of the late Joseph Berlin and Della Jane Puffenbarger Smith.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and participated in the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. He received a Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 23 years of service.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to play country music.

His wife, Joy A. Mitchell Smith, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jean S. Higgins of Churchville, VA, and Dawn S. Armstrong of Middlebrook, VA; a son, Sonny Smith of Churchville, VA; and four grandchildren, Kenton smith, Katie Townsend and Hunter and Shannon Higgins of Churchville, VA.

The Rev. Beth Pyles will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. today at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA. Burial will be at Head Waters Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Highland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, VA 24465.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dolly C. Gallagher

Dolly C. Gallagher of Upper Marlboro, MD, died on Feb. 7.

Born in 1931 in Upper Tract, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Lessie (Dean) Riggleman.

Her husband the late Allen Gallagher, Jr., preceded her in death.

Surviving are children, Debra Gallagher (Joe Carr) and Tim Gallagher; and sisters and brother, Vivan (Ben, Icel (Buck) and Ralph (Pete) Riggleman.

She also was preceded in death by brothers, Ona (Owen), Teddy and Roy Riggleman.

Family and friends will be received at Lee Funeral Home, 6633 Old Alexander Ferry road, Clinton, MD  20735, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Feb. 18 and between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Feb. 18, with a 1 p.m. service.  Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.

Arnold L. Cook

Arnold Lester "Tinker" Cook, 73, of Franklin died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Cook was born Jan. 16, 1935, in Cass and was a son of the late Lester Arnold Cook and Leona Long Cook.

He retired from Nielsen Construction Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

On June 18, 1985, he married Linda Wagoner, who survives.

He is also survived by four daughters, Teresa Lynn Baker of Charleston, Debbie Newcome of Harrisonburg, VA, Melissa Holdson of Grottoes, VA, and April Cook of Franklin; two sons, Robert Cook of Brandywine and Wesley Cook of Franklin; a sister, Lucille Saint Claire of Streetsboro, OH; a brother, Everett Cook of Kimbolton, OH; and nine grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Baker; two brothers, Shallus Cook and Paul Everett Cook; and one sister, Betty Cook.

The Rev. Carl Tribett conducted the funeral Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract with military honors by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad.

Doris Rogers, 60

Doris E. Martin-Rogers, 60, of Old Fields died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at her residence.

Born Oct. 13, 1947, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Leander Srout and Una Pauline Pratt Srout.

She retired in 1996 from American Woodmark and was a cofounder of CE's Helping Hands in Old Fields.

Surviving is her soulmate of 26 years, Clifton E. Rogers.

Also surviving are four daughters, Lisa Taylor and husband, Albert of Hogansville, GA, Becky Hardesty and husband, tim of Oakland, MD, Loretta Castro and husband, Clyde of of Reston, VA, and Brenda Crites and husband Jody, of Moorefield;  one son, Denver Flinn of Moorefield; two step-daughters, Tammy Young and husband, Carrie of Kingsport, TN, and Jodee Cullers and husband, Matt of Arthur; a two step-sons, Greg Rogers and wife, Bonnie, and Roy Rogers and wife, Heidi, all of Old Fields; six sisters, Jean S. Evans of Arlington, VA, Mona Miller of Moorefield, Mildred Cole of McCoole, MD, Linda Lough  and Hazel Crane, both of Old Fields, and Janet Brooks of Westminster, MD; four brothers, Howard Srout and Doyle Srout, both of Old Fields, Paul Srout of Golden Valley, AZ, and Robert Rader of Ocean City, MD; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Srout and claude Srout; and one sister, Helen Srout.

Funeral services will be held today at 11a.m. at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg,  with Pastor Dan Howard and Elder Richard Warner officiating.  Burial will be at Thrush Cemetery, Antioch.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
