Leland Ray Bergdall, 81

Leland Ray Bergdall, age 81, of South Fork Road, Moorefield, died on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA.

He was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Rough Run. 

He was the son of the late Silas Edward Bergdall and Ella Mae Propst Bergdall.  Also preceding him in death are one sister, Bertha Cleaver, and three brothers, Clarence Bergdall, Forrest Bergdall and Carl Bergdall.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Alt Bergdall of Moorefield.  Also surviving are two daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda and Carl Burgess of Moorefield, and Sara and Bob Faulk of Chantilly, VA.  Two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law survive him, Robert and Katie Faulk and David Faulk.  One sister Erslie Sites of Petersburg and several nieces and nephews survive Mr. Bergdall.

Mr. Bergdall was a retired farmer.  He was a member of the Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Peru.  He was on the board of directors and a charter member of the Peru Community Center.  He was a lifetime member of the West Virginia Poultry Association and a member of the West Virginia Farm Bureau. 

Funeral services were conducted at Elmore Funeral Home Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Pat Pittsnogle and Brianna Richardson officiating.  Burial followed at the Kline Cemetery at Upper Tract.  Memorial donations may be made to the Peru Community Center or a charity of choice. 

Mary A. Harper, 91

Mrs. Mary Ann Mowery Harper, 91, of Landes, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Harper was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Brushy Run, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Newton Mowery and Lillie Mae Dean Mowery. 

She was a member of  Bethel Church of the Brethren, where she served as co-treasurer with her husband.  She was active with the Women's Fellowship and was a charter member of the Petersburg Garden club.  

On July 27, 1940, she married Leon L. Harper, who preceded her in death Jan. 2, 1996. 

She is survived by three daughters, Carole Faye Judy of Glasgow, VA, Virginia Mae Propst of Stephens City, VA, and JoAnn Harper of Landes; three grandchildren, Janice (Judy) Buckner of Raleigh, NC, Mary Mae (Propst) Blowe and Marcia Leigh (Propst) Brackbill, both of Stephens City, VA; and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Janet Mowery; and seven brothers, Chester Mowery, Austin Mowery, Perry Mowery, Russell Mowery, Kermit Mowery, Stewart Mowery and Sidney Mowery.  

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

The Rev. Gregory A. Rotruck conducted the funeral  2 p.m. Saturday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Ronna Elizabeth Sponaugle

Ronna Elizabeth Sponaugle, 86, of Franklin, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Sponaugle was born Nov. 9, 1916, at Macksville and was a daughter of the late Wilber Harper and Bessie (Mauzy) Harper.

She graduated from St. John's Academy in Petersburg in 1933 and from Griffith Beauty School in Pittsburgh PA, in 1935.

On Dec. 31, 1937, she was united in marriage to George I. Sponaugle Sr., who died on Sept. 12, 1995.

She was a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church of Franklin, and belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star No. 138 for 50 years..

She is survived by her children, George I. Sponaugle II and his wife, Kathy M. Sponaugle of Franklin, and Jim Sponaugle of Zanesville, OH; one sister, Ruth H. Drake of Franklin; five grandchildren, George I. Sponaugle III, Erin Sponaugle Blankenship, Ashley Elizabeth Sponaugle, Sarah Michelle Sponaugle and Alexander David Sponaugle; three nieces, Betty Jo Caliguire, Mary Ann Warner and Patricia Bergsland; and one nephew, James B. Harper.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Arvella Harper May; and two brothers, Rubert W. Harper and Hansel J. Harper.

The Revs. William Hartsfield, Thom Malcolm and Stephanie Malcolm conducted a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was a Pine Crest Memorial Gardens in Franklin.

Bertie Long Heavener, 76

Bertie Long Heavener, 76, of Cabins, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Mrs Heavener was born Oct. 12, 1926, in Onego and was the daughter of the late Sheridan and Mary Jane Vance Long.

On Jan. 21 1967, she married Luther I. Heavener, who survives. 

Also surviving are eight sons, Larry J. Vance, George W. Vance, Douglas F. Morral, Sidney E. Morral and Joseph L. Heavener, all of Petersburg; Glen D. Vance of Mill Creek, Richard L. Morral of Landes and David A. Heavener of Cabins; nine daughters, Mary E. Thompson of Franklin, Anna M. Wimer, Jurlene Wimer, Johnnie Sue Kimble, Mary E. Blair, Cynthia K. Morral and Cindy K. Heavener, all of Petersburg, Ruthlene VanMeter of Upper Tract and Kathy S. Arbaugh of Cherry Grove; a sister, Beulah Cook of Onego; four brothers, Grover Long and Milton Long, both of Onego, Kermit Long of Jersey Shore, PA, and John Long of Seneca Rocks; 33 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two infant daughters, Wilda C. Vance and Anna L. Vance; four grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Long, Earl Long and Warren Long; and two sisters, infant Anna Mae Long and Hazel Mallow.  

Pastors Gregory A. Bland and the Revs. Brady Goldizen and Harold E. Evans conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was in the Long family cemetery in Onego.

Effie Mae Simon Charles

Effie Mae Simon Charles, age 106, of Cumberland, MD, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin, where she had resided since 1984. 

She was born May 30, 1896, at Milam, the daughter of the late Anne Rebecca Simon and James W. Davis. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E. Charles in 1946,  She was also predeceased by a sister, Minnie Simon Dasher; a brother, Samuel Simon; two nephews, N. George Dasher, Jr., and Edmound Simon; a niece, Hazel Dahmer; and a great-nephew, Charles Dasher. 

Mrs. Charles attended St. John's Academy and was a teacher in late teens and early 1920s.  She taught in several schools in Hardy, Pendleton, Grant and Mineral counties.  While teaching at Wiley Ford and staying with friends in Cumberland, MD, she met Albert Charles, whom she married in 1925.  After her marriage, she spent the next 60 years in Cumberland, MD.

Following her husband's death, she worked at various times as a housekeeper, practical nurse, and babysitter.  She was a charter member of Zion United Methodist Church on Bedford Road in Cumberland, MD.  She made the noodles for many gallons of chicken soup and helped make hundreds of gallons of apple butter to raise money for the church building.  She was a member of the YMCA Auxiliary in Cumberland, MD, the Senior Citizens Social Retirement Club of Allegheny county, the 60 Plus Club, and was a life member of the Senior Citizens Western Maryland Labor Temple. She was a delegate from Western Maryland to President Ronald Reagan's Conference on Aging. 

Mrs. Charles voted in the 1920 presidential election when women first became eligible to voted, and voted in every presidential election since, including the 2000 election.

Mrs. Charles is survived by one stepson, George Charles and his wife, Marion, of Frostburg, MD; two step-granddaughters; and two step-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by 14 great-nieces and nephews; and 21 great-great-great nieces and nephews.  

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Kight Funeral Home, Cumberland, MD, officiated by the Rev. B. Eugene Shaver.  Burial was in Zion Memorial Park.
