William E. Kuykendall

William Ervin "Bill" Kuykendall, 80, of New Market, VA, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at Life CAre Center of New Market, VA. 

Born in Pendleton County on July 19, 1928, he was a son of the late Coy and Eva (Hoover) Kuykendall. 

He worked as a police officer in the Town of Grottoes, VA, and had served in the U.S. Army. 

On Oct. 4, 1972, he was united in marriage to Betty Jo (Critzer) Kuykendall, who survives. 

Also surviving are three sons, John Simmons of Franklin, Jerry E. Kuykendall of Clover Hill, VA and Jeff Kuykendall of Franklin; three step-daughters, Diana Lynn Pike and Jackie Morris, both of Grottoes, VA, and Sharon M. Filler of Port Republic,, VA; two step-sons, John Richard Gibson of Elkton, VA, and Gerald L. Gibson of Grottoes, VA, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Billy Kuykendall. 

At the family's request, his body has been cremated.

Charles Rhodes, 85

Charles Lindamood Rhodes, 85, of Broadway, VA, died Jan. 26, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.  

He was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Broadway, VA, and was a son of the late Robert Neff Rhodes, SR., and Mattie Lindamood Rhodes. 

He graduated from Eastern Mennonite School.  He worked in the agriculture and poultry industry all of his life.  He was employed at Rocco Hatchery in Broadway, VA.  He and his brothers, Bob and Don, operated Broadview Dairy Farm at Broadway, VA.  He served in the Civilian Public Service during WWII and transferred to Brethren Volunteer Service.  He was a member of Zion Mennonite Church in Broadway.     

On July 26, 1974, he married the former Janet Dove, formerly of Fort Seybert, who survives. 

Also surviving are two brothers, Jim Rhodes and Barry Rhodes, both of Broadway, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews.  

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Don Rhodes,; a sister, Nancy Showalter; and his step-mother Virginia Rhodes. 

The Rev. Clyde Kratz and Pastor Kathleen Miko conducted a memorial service on Jan. 20 at the Zion Mennonite Church.  Burial in the church cemetery was private.

Ruthlene Kisamore Champ

Ruthlene Kisamore Champ, 73, of Petersburg, Feb. 7, 2009, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.  

Mrs. Champ was born in Brood, the daughter of Vallie Bennett Kisamore of Cabins and the late Fred Kisamore. 

Her husband, Paul Ruben Champ, preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1993. 

She was a homemaker and a member of the Riverside Mennonite Church, Harman. 

Surviving are three daughters, Rosalie Phares and husband, Allen, Brenda Kisner and husband, Charles, and Esther Lewis and husband, Roger, all of Petersburg.; one sister, Joy Kisamore, Cabins, one brother, Jimmy Kisamore and wife, Louise of Riverton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Clyde Kisamore.  

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, at the BAsagic Funeral Home Chapel, Petersburg, with Pastor Jerry Sebastian, Pastor Harold Emswiler and Pastor Robert Wenger officiating.  Burial was in North Fork Mennonite Cemetery, Petersburg.

Fannie Shoulders, 77

Fannie Alice Shoulders, 77 of Addison, IL, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downer's Grove, IL. 

Mrs. Shoulders was born Aug. 19, 1931, in Franklin and was the daughter of the late Verlie and Verdie Simmons Warner. 

On July 2, 1952, she married Donald Shoulders, who preceded her in death, and moved with him to Illinois for his 1-W service.

In Illinois, she became a mother, homemaker and active member of Lombard Bible Church. 

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Dominick Schiavone of Wayne, IL, Elizabeth and Michael Kugel of Hagerstown, MD, Susan and Craig Paulsen of Roselle, IL, and Janice and David Brookes of Houston, TX; and 16 grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Kyrie and Ashley Paulsen; sister, Thelma "Sis" Warner Harding of Franklin; and brother, Verlie "Bub" Warner of Manassas, VA. 

Pastor Steve Hammer and Dr. Gene Smiley conducted the funeral service at Lombard Bible Church on Jan. 10.  Burial was at Chapel Hill Gardens in Elmhurst, IL.

C. Jean Nelson, 79 

C. Jean Nelson, 79, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. 

Born July 27, 1929, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Eston and Dora Cox Kimble. 

She retired from Signet Bank.  She was a member of Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church in Baltimore, MD, where she served as usher and secretary and attended Darkesville United Methodist Church.   

She was a 1948 graduate of Petersburg High School.

Her husband, Fred D. Nelson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son, Thomas Nelson of Martinsburg; one daughter, Sharon Nelson of Baltimore, MD; three grandchildren, David, Jackie, and Jamie; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Kimble of Bel Air, MD, and Randy Kimble of Petersburg; and three sisters, Joan Borror of Petersburg, Barbara Bloom of Akron, OH, and Sylvia Ours of Martinsburg.  

Memorial services will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Darkesville United Methodist Church, Inwood, with Rev. Vicki Curry officiating.  Graveside will be held at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.  

Betty McAvoy, 76

Betty Jane McAvoy, age 76, of Purgitsville died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at her home in Purgitsville.

She was born Jan. 12, 1933, in Onego and was the daughter of the late Asa VAnce and Florence (Morral) VAnce. 

Mrs. McAvoy worked at American Woodmark, Moorefield, for 19 years. 

Her husband of 57 years, Jurl D. McAvoy, survives. 

Also surviving are one son, John W. McAvoy of Capon Bridge; three daughters, Dottie S. Mongold and Joan Feigley, both of Purgitsville, and Jean Caplinger of Timberville, VA; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Curtis Vance of Seneca Rocks, Richard Vance of Montrose, Lynn Vance of Maysville, and Bruce Vance of Job.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, infants Robert McAvoy and Jurl McAvoy, Jr., and David McAvoy; a daughter, Rose McAvoy five brothers, Minor Vance, Harry Vance, Melvin Vance, Oley Vance and Burl Vance; and a son-in-law, Carl "Bud" Vance.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Hughes officiating.  Burial was in the McAvoy Family Cemetery, Purgitsville.   

Laura P. Sites, 94

Laura Jane Propst Sites, 94, Hinton, VA, died on Feb. 7, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.  

She was born on Nov. 18, 1914, in Pendleton County and was the daughter of the late John Conrad and Lutheria L. Propst.     

Mrs. Sites attended school in Pendleton County.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church.  

On May 23, 1932, she married, Perry Sites, who preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 2000. 

She is survived by her five children, Evelyn Judy of Strasburg, VA, Jessie Hartman of Franklin, Donnie Sites of Linville, VA, Linda Lyons of Shenandoah, VA, Mary Sites of Hinton, VA; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  

She was the last surviving member of her family.  

A funeral service was held in the chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, VA, on Tuesday with the Rev. Gerald Meeks officiating.  Burial followed in Linville U.C.C. Cemetery.
