Nancy H. Cannon, 66

Nancy Hartman Cannon, 66, passed away January 29, 2004, at her home in Fairfax, VA.

Mrs. Cannon was born in Franklin on October 13, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Shirley and Elmer Hartman. 

She graduated from Franklin High School in the class of 1956. 

She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Hugh L. Cannon; her daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Robert Slugg; two beloved grandsons, Kyle and John Slugg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Maggie Hartman of Frnaklin and Wayne and Helen Hartman of Hampstead, NC; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat Hartman Sheehan and husband, John Sheehan of North Beach, MD, Judy Hartman Ratcliffe and husband, Robert Ratcliffe of Tryon, NC, and Jo Ann Hartman Walker and husband, Ed Walker of Phoenix, AZ.  She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, and many loving and devoted friends.  

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Everly Funeral Home, Fairfax, VA, with burial immediately following the service in the Fairfax City Cemetery.  Friends and family were received following the burial at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.  She will be remembered by all who knew her for her loving spirit and joyful nature. 

Erma Lough Dyer, 88

Erma Lough Dyer, 88, a resident of Crozet, VA, and formerly of Harrisonburg, VA, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at her home.  

Mrs. Dyer was born April 15, 1915, in Kline and was the daughter of the late Benjamin N. and Nina Lough Hartman.

She lived the majority of her life in the Harrisonburg, VA, area and had lived in Crozet, VA, for the past 11 years.  She had been employed with Shenandoah Valley Produce and the JMU dining hall until retiring in the early 1980s's.  She was a member of the Muhlenberg Lutheran Church. 

Surviving are three children, doris Grimm of Harrisonburg, VA, Eric L. Dyer of Del-Norte, Co, and Donna Conley of Crozet, VA; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. 

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

Dr. Roy s. Thomas, III, conducted the graveside funeral 3 p.m. Sunday at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crozet Baptist Church, 5804 St. George Ave., Crozet, VA 22932 or to a charity of your choice. 

The Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA, handled the arrangements. 

Juanita Sponaugle, 88

Juanita Harper Sponaugle, 88, a resident of the Sullivans Crossing Community, Elkins, and a patient at the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington, departed this life Friday evening, Feb. 6, 2004, at the Broaddus Hospital at Philippi. She had been in declining health.

Mrs. Sponaugle was born Friday, Sept. 10, 1915, at Circleville, a daughter of the late Owen Harper and Osie Nelson Harper.

She was a graduate of Circleville High School with the class of 1935. She was a member of the Circleville United Methodist Church.  She had worked for the Fairchild Aircraft Co. at Hagerstown, Md., and briefly at a Candy Shoppe at Seattle, WA.  In later years she was certified as a nurse’s assistant and was employed by local health care centers.  She was a kind and caring individual who had numerous friends in Pendleton and Randolph counties. She was a hard worker, enjoyed helping others and was loved and admired by all whose lives she touched.

On Nov. 5, 1936, at Oakland, MD, she married Willard Mason Sponaugle, who preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 2000. 

Surviving are one sister-in-law, Jean Dove and husband, Ray, of Petersburg; two brothers-in-law, Willis Turner and Billy Turner; several nieces and nephews; special survivors, Warden Heltzel and wife, Letha, of Milan, OH, and Harry “June” Heltzel and wife, Sally, of Bristol, VA, as Mr. and Mrs. Sponaugle had kept Harry and Warden in their home as though they were their own sons. 

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband are two brothers, Conley and Cranston Harper; and three sisters, Nellie Shrader, Cornelia and Reva Harper; and a special friend, Allen Young.

Final rites were conducted at the chapel of Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins with the Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley officiating.  Interment followed at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. Visit the website of www.lohrbarbfuneralhome.com to extend condolences. 

Frances Bowling, 71

Frances Marie Bowling, 71, of MAcArthur, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital. 

Mrs. Bowling was born at Sprague, December 31, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Raymond and Frances Piotrowski Gravely. 

She was a homemaker and a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Beckley Moose Lodge #1606 and a past president of the Pocahontas Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. 

In addition to her parents, her husband Muarry Bowling, son , Jim Bowling, and sister, Joan Peck, preceded her in death. 

Surviving are her daughter, Debra Jackson of Franklin; brothers, Frank and Freddy Gravely of Marlinton; special nephew, Bobby Peck of MacArthur; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 

Father Thatson held graveside services at Mountain View Cemetery, Marlinton, at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Darlene M. Dale, 62

Darlene M. Dale, 62, of the 1300 block of Algona Road, Chesapeake, Va, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital. 

Born in Sugar Grove, Mrs. Dale was the daughter of the late margie Simmons Smith and the late Samuel H. Smith and the widow of Linwood Dale. 

Mrs. Dale is survived by four daughters, Hilda Harper and husband Thomas, Annie Norton and husband, Bill, Sharon McCray and husband, Martin, all of Chesapeake, VA, and Rebecca Gearhart and husband, Harold of Scott Depot; two sons, Donald McCray and wife, Carla, and John McCray, Jr., and wife Theresa, all of Chesapeake, VA; three brothers Sammy Smith, Stanley Smith and Willie Smith; four sisters, Stella Ringgold, Linda Falls, Mary Smith and Nola Smith, all of Harrisonburg, VA; 29 grandchildren, Crystal and boyfriend, Tony, Stephanie, Margie, Carlton, Marci, Gloria, Jennifer, Dwayne, Latoya M., Donald, Ashley, Rebecca, Cierra, Atika, Hank, Cleveland, Maurica, Terryon, Clevon, Alfonso, Latonya, Lawanna, Yolanda, Rolando, Latoya Q., Laquisha, Tyamkea, Tenesha and Deshawn; four great-grandchildren, Kiera, Ja'Niya, Jermain and Yoncey; her loving companion, John Shelton; her son-in-law, Roger Jensen; and her caregivers, William Brinkley and Susan Hales. 

A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Louis Martin.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Francis Gay Chapel.

Mrs. Dale was a very caring person who would do anything for anybody and will be greatly missed by her friends and family. 

Susie C. Reedy, 63

Susie Catherine Reel Reedy, 63, of Bridgewater, VA, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at her home.

Mrs. Reedy was born Feb. 28, 1940, in Romney and was the daughter of the late George Washington Reel and Lula Bell Hawse Reel.  

She attended Briery Branch Church of the Brethren.  She had worked at Wampler Foods for more than 20 years, and at Wendy's.

Surviving are nine children, Kelly Simmons, Kitty Smith, both of Bridgewater, VA, Betty Bowman of Broadway, VA, James Michael, Jr. of Moorefield, Janie Sites of Beverly, Josephine Hendrix of Petersburg, Joyce George of Upper Tract, John Wichael, Jr. of Moorefield and George Wichael of Elkton, VA; three stepgrandchildren, Earl Minnick, Jr. of Kentucky, Everett Minnick of Harrisonburg, VA, and Linda Lam of Elkton, VA;  29 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.  

Pastor Randy Cosner conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at Briery Branch Church of the Brethren.  Burial was in the Briery Branch Church Cemetery. 

Arrangements were under the direction of the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, VA.  

Ervin Hartman, 77

William Ervin Hartman, 77, of Riverside, OH, died at his home SAturday, Jan. 24, 2004. 

Mr. Hartman was born January 15, 1927, at Brandywine and was a son of the late C. Oak Hartman of Frnaklin and Ottie Eye Hartman Hoover of Brandywine. 

He is survived by his wife Edith (Welsh) Hartman of Riverside, OH.

He was a retired truck driver from White Villa Grocers of West Carrelton, OH, having served them for 37 years.  

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II in Yokahoma, Japan.  He was a member of the American Legion #619, AMVETS Club #24, AMerican Slovach Club, all of Dayton, OH, and the Eagles #2641 of Fairbourne, OH. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Carolyn (Oliver) Burkett of Spotsylvania, VA, and Karen (Mike) Fisher of Fairfield Glade, TN; two sons, Roger Hartman and Jeffery Hartman, both of Fairbourne, OH; one sister, Coleen Shipley of Logan, OH; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Moore of Fairbourne, OH; one brother, Kenneth Hartman of Columbus, OH; and one half sister, Elva (Jeannie HOover) McLain of Brandywine. 

Funeral services were held at Newcomer Funeral Home, Dayton, OH, on January 30, and burial was in Valley View Memorial Cemetery, Zenia, OH.
