Roscoe Johnson
Roscoe Johnson, 78, of Franklin, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Johnson was born April 3, 1926, at Ruddle, and was the son of the late William Claude Johnson and Alpha Hartman Johnson.

He was retired in 1988 after 35 years in tree disease prevention for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, Tree Disease Prevention, after 35 years. He was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church.

On Feb. 29, 1956, he married to Alice Rettie Hedrick Johnson, who survives in Franklin.

Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Owen of Crimora, VA; a son, Tom Johnson of Franklin; a sister, Myrtle Johnson, of Franklin; a brother, Leo Johnson of Huttonsville; five grandchildren, Andrea, Staci and Loren Owen and Ashley and Rachel Johnson; and one step-grandson, Willie Brown.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Leonard W. Johnson; five brothers, Robert, Morris, Arvel, Brozie and Roy; and one sister, Margie Simpson Clower.

Pastor Dan Ludwick conducted the funeral Saturday in the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Lora C. Smith 

Lora Clara Smith, 86, of Baltimore, MD, died Monday, Jan 31, 2005, at Lighthouse Senior Living Center in Baltimore, MD. 

Mrs. Smith was born July 12, 1918, in Cherry Grove and was a daughter of the late Isaac Earl Murphy and Sylvia Virginia Bennett Murphy.

She retired from the American Can Company in Baltimore, MD, as an inspector with 35 years of service.  She graduated from Circleville High School in 1936 and was a member of Circleville Presbyterian Church. 

Survivors include her husband, Richard Smith of Baltimore, MD; a daughter Joanna Robbins of Knoxville, MD; a son Earl R. Smith of Harrisonburg, VA; a sister, Helen Johnson of Solomons, MD; a brother, Herman Murphy of Cherry Grove; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.   

She also was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeffery Smith; two brothers, Dana and Frazer Murphy; one sister, Zetha Vandevander, one half brother, Hessie Hornick; and one half sister, BonnieWymer. 

The Rev. Paul O'Gorek conducted the funeral Saturday at the Circleville Presbyterian Church.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton by Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  

Roscoe T. Harper

Roscoe Thomas Harper, 90, of Pendleton Nursing Home and formerly of Route 220 South in Franklin, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at the nursing home. 

Mr. Harper was born Feb. 14, 1914, in Cave and was the son of the late Otto H. and Nannie Fleisher Harper.  

He was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church. 

His wife, Bessie M. Mowery Harper, preceded him in death. 

Survivors include three daughters, Reta M. Corn of Baltimore, MD, Mary Elaine Cody of Murietta, CA, and Jean Chestnut of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Nola Mauzy of Staunton, VA, and Josephine Stover of Harrisonburg, VA; 15 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and a couple of great-great-grandchildren.    

He was also preceded in death by one son, Woodrow Harper; a brother, Carl Harper; and a sister, Donna Rodgers. 

The Rev. Stanley Kile will conduct the funeral today at 11 a.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will follow at the Cedar Hill Cemetery.  

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  

Viola LeCrone, 84

Mrs. Viola Lorene LeCrone, 84, of Franklin died Feb. 1, 2005, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.  

She was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Union County, OH, and was the daughter of the late Clarence Fletcher and Lela Overfield Fletcher. 

She was a cook at the Women's Reformatory in Marysville, OH.  She was a Methodist by faith and a member of Ohio Lotis Rebekah Lodge #501, Mechanicsburg, OH. 

On July 7, 1937, she married Lawrence LeCrone, who preceded her in death in 1958. 

Surviving are two sons, David Le Crone and wife, Carrie of Franklin, and Larry LeCrone of Ft. Walton Beach, FL: two daughters, Pamela Neff and husband Lanny of Bellefontaine, OH, and Patricia Koehler and husband Jim of Springfield, OH; two brother, Gene Fletcher and wife Martha of Middleburg, OH, and Ralph Fletcher and wife, Lillian of Pittsboro, IN; two sisters, Stena Owen of Magnetic springs, OH, and Margaret Channel and husband, Theodore  of Plain City, OH; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by one daughter and two sisters. 

Funeral services were held Saturday at Middleburg United Methodist Church in Middleburg, OH, with Pastor Mebane McMahone officiating.  Burial was at Middleburg Cemetery by Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine, OH.  

Local arrangements were handled by Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  

Grace Hampton, 86

Grace Huff Hampton, 86, of Upper Tract died Saturday, FEb. 5, 2005, at her residence. 

Mrs. Hampton was born June 8, 1918, in Leslie County, KY, and was a daughter of the late Ishmael Huff, Sr., and Myrtle Nantz Huff.

She attended South  Mill Creek Church of the Brethren and Brake Church of the Brethren.  

her husband, David Hampton, Jr., preceded her in death on May 4, 1991. 

She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Mary All of Leesburg, FL, and Gloria Faye Alt of Upper Tract; two sons, Louie E. Hampton of Dominican Repulbic, and Harvey Oza Hampton of Burgaw, NC; three sisters, Vada Fay Alt of Moorefield, Mossie Roberts of Hamton, VA, and Geneva Robbins of Kingsport, TN; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.  

She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Jeanette Cannon, Juanita Vedder Holmes, Virginia Hopkins, June Huff and Bobby Jean Huff; and five brothers, Ishmael Huff, Jr., Robert Huff, Stanley "Block" Huff, William McKinley Huff and James Huff.  

Pastors Randy Ours and Craig Howard conducted the funeral Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.  

Gwendolyn Anderson, 77

Gwendolyn M. "Dolly" Anderson, 77, of of Belle Vernon, Rostraver Township, PA, died Jan. 28, 2005, in TLC Nursing Home, West Newton, PA.

Born in Donora, PA, on Sept 11, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Olie and Cecilia (Moravec) Evick.  Mr. Evick was formerly of Franklin.  

A homemaker, she was a member of the Church of St. Anne, Rostraver Township, PA, and an avid bingo player. 

Her husband, Harve C. Anderson, Jr., preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1988.  

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Harve C., III, and Susan Anderson and Robert W. and Debbie Anderson, all of Rostraver Township, PA, and Mark O. and Terri Anderson of West Newton, PA; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia J. and George Wilhelm of West Newton, PA; one sister, Patricia L. Grove of Rostraver Township, PA; and 13 grandchildren. 

A funeral mass was conducted Feb. 2 at the Church of St. Anne, Rostraver Township, PA, with the Rev. Msgr. Nicholas A. Mitolo presiding.  Interment was in Mon Valley Memorial Park in Pennsylvania.   

Lester G. Snyder, 93

Lester G. Snyder, 93, formerly of Brandywine, passed away Friday, February 4, 2005, in the Frey Village Retirement Center, Middletown, PA. 

Born in Harrisonburg, VA, on October 1, 1911, he was the son of the late Luther and Hattie Elliott Gladwell.  He was later adopted by the late Early and Deelie Snyder. 

He was a farmer and had retired as a bus and meal truck driver for Milton Hershey Schools and had also worked at the former Hershey Shoe Factory.  He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Derry Township, PA and its Men's Club.  He was also a member of the Hershey Retired Employees Organization.  He enjoyed gardening, furniture refinishing, taking movies , fishing and wine making.   

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise E. Hiveley Snyder, on September 10, 2000.  She was formerly of Brandywine.  

Mr. Snyder is survived by four daughters, Mary E. Stadler, wife of Ronald H. Stadler of Middletown, PA, L. Jean Straw, wife of the Rev. Irvin E. Straw of Lititz, PA, Patricia S.A. O'Steen, wife of David Chapman O'Steen of Florence, AL, and Leta L. Sweger, wife of William Sweger of O'Fallon, IL; three sons, William L. Snyder, husband of Sandra Kline Snyder and James K. Snyder, Husband of Marilyn Hooves Snyder, both of Hummelstown, PA, and David W. Gladwell of Lebanon, PA; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.  

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Eston Snyder, in July of 1994. 

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 850 Hill Church Road, Hummelstown, PA, with the Rev. Charles Scott and the Rev. Irvin E. Straw, his son-in-law, officiating.  Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Lower Paxton township, PA.  Friends are invited to call today at the church from 10 a.m. until time of the service. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 850 Hill Church Road, Hummelstown, PA  17036.
