Fletcher Pope, Jr.

Fletcher Pope, Jr., of McLean, VA, passed away on Jan. 23, 2009, at the Sunrise of McLean, VA. 

Fletcher was born at Fort Seybert and raised on a general farm in Bridgewater, VA.

Mr. pope received a BA in Business administration from Bridgewater College and an MS in agricultural economics from the University of Maryland.  He also attended the Columbia University's Russian Institute.  During World War II, he was a Naval Aviator.  He worked for the department of agriculture as an agricultural economist.  During 1955-57, Mr. Pope served as the Assistant Agricultural Atttache at the American Embassy in Moscow.

Mr. Pope retired from the Department of Agriculture in 1979 and for almost 12 years operated a consulting firm analyzing current developments in the Soviet agricultural situation.

He was the beloved husband of Mary R. Pope; and devoted father of Steven D. Pope and wife, Agatha M, and Gregory L. Pope.  HE is also survived by a sister, Anna Mae Will.

A memorial service will be held at McLean Baptist Church, 1367 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA, on Saturday at 2 p.m.  Interment will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery, Bridgewater, VA, onFriday at 1 p.m.

Austie Mae Smith

Austie Mae Smith, 99, of Riverton passed away Feb. 2, 2009, at Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

She was born Aug. 12, 1909, in Riverton and was a daughter of the late Samuel Smith and Ada Hedrick Smith.

She retired as a cook from the 4-U Restuarant and was a Methodist by faith.

Surviving are a sister, Margie Smith of Riverton; four grandchildren, Debbie Lantz of Cherry Grove, David Kisamore of Maysville and Keith Kisamore and Karen Watts, both of Riverton; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ruby Gail Kisamore; a son-in-law, Jerry Kisamore; and two brothers, Curtis and William.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel at Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Stanley Kile. Burial will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad.

Kent "Flat Top" Lightner

Kent "Flat Top" Lightner, 73 of Riverton passed away Feb. 2, 2009, at his step-daughter's home in Edgewater, MD.

Mr. Lightner was born on March 25, 1935, in Maxwelton, the son of the late Chestly M. and Mae Tilson Lightner.

He worked for Bellines, Burns Motor Freight, Howes Leather and retired from Kevin Roy's trucking.  He enjoyed talking with friends at the Valley View Restaurant and Hunting. 

His wife, Roselee Hinkle Lightner, survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Michele Lightner, Maryanne Lightner and Karen Sue Blankenship, all of Lewisburg; four step-daughters, Donna Griffith, Vicki Thomas, Edith Squires and Roselee Blowe, all of Edgewater, MD; two step-sons, William Thomas Blowe, III, and Edward Blowe, both of Edgewater, MD; two sisters, Mildred Schaffer of Hinton, and Anna Mae Fleshman of Caldwell; two brothers, Ray Lightner and Frank Lightner, both of Lewisburg; one grandchild; nien step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Passtor Barbara Rexroad officiating.  Burial will be in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary H. Alexander

Mary H. Alexander, 73, of Upper Tract died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at her residence.

She was born April 25, 1935, in the Reddes River Community of Wilkes County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Jim Holloway and Eula Staley Holloway.

She was a homemaker and a member of the South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren.

On June 9, 1952, she married Connie Alexander, who preceded her in death on May 12, 1997.

She is survived by three sons, Ronnie Alexander of Upper Tract, Joseph Alexander of Hendersonville, TN, and Robert Alexander of Franklin; one sister, Nancy Hall of North Wilkesboro, NC; one brother James Holloway of North Wilkesboro, NC: five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren at Upper tract with Pastors Randy Ours and Otis "Buzz" Weatherholt officiating.  Burial will be at the Alexander Family Cemetery at Upper Tract.

Memorials may be made to Upper Tract Rescue Squad, PO Box 42, Upper Tract, WV  26866, Upper Tract Fire Dept., PO Box 42, Upper Tract, WV; or the South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, HC 32 Box 60, Upper Tract, WV  26866.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.   

Warren Ralph Graham entered into rest at the age of 88 years on Jan. 27, 2009.

 Born Nov. 4, 1920, in Kline, he was the son of the late William Perry and Lelah Mitchell Graham.

He served as a pastor in the Lutheran Ministry for 30 years in the Federal Bureau of Prisons and continued to serve the church after his restaurant.

HIs wife, Betsy Powell Graham, survives.

Also surviving are a sister, Lola Graham; a son, Mark; daughters, Judy, Lynn and Susan; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

funeral services were held Friday at Rock of Ages Lutheran Church, Stone Mountain, GA, with Pastor Randy Palm officiating.  Interment was in floral Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker, GA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lutheran World Relief Fund.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Wages & Sons Stone Mountain Chapel, Stone Mountain, GA.
