W.R. Bonsal, III, 76

W.R. "Rocky" Bonsal, III, 76, of Pinehurst, NC, died Wednesday morning, Jan 11 2006, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, NC.

Bonsal was born in Pittsfield, MA, on July 22, 1930, to the late Agnes and William R. Bonsal, Jr.

He was a 1949 graduate of Saint Mark's School in Southboro, MA, and earned a bachelor's degree from yale University in 1953.  He was a 1956 graduate of Wharton School of Business and attended Harvard School of Business in 1990.  

From 1956 to 1960, Bonsal worked for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co., joining his family's firm.,, W.R. Bonsal Co., in 1960, starting out as a job scheduler, but eventually serving as treasurer, present, chairman and CEO until his retirement in late1997. 

Bonsal was named Manufacturing Entrepreneur of the year in 1997 in the Regional Entrepreneur awards program co-sponsored by Ernst and Young, USA Today, Nadsdaq and the Kauffman Foundation.  He was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, NC, serving at one time or another as a senior warden, a member of the vestry, and as chairman of various committees.  His involvement with years of charitable work and support of many organizations continued even into retirement. 

He is survived by his wife Patricia (Patsy) Schoonmaker Bonsal, whom he married in 1959; a daughter, Katherine B. Tracy of southern Pines, NC; two sons, William R. Bonsal, IV of Niskayuna, NY, and Andrew S. Bonsal of Edgefield, SC; as well as a sister, Mary Potter of Franklin; and three grandchildren.

 A memorial service was held Jan. 15 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, NC.

Leanna Ross

Leanna Ross, 81, of Speedway, IN, died Dec. 28, 2005. 

Born Aug. 14, 1924, at Kline, she was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Mary Greenawalt Dahmer, former residents of Kline. 

Mrs. Ross was a registered nurse for Speedway Schools and a member of the Speedway Christian Church and Kappa Kappa Kappa Sorority.  She was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. 

She was the widow of Russel L. Cunningham and Ralph Ross.  Surviving are a son, Carl Cunningham and a daughter Debby Thompson, both of Indianapolis, IN; a granddaughter, Kelly Thompson; a sister, Hilda Smith of Tulsa, OK; and a brother, Roy S. Dahmer of Melbourne, FL.  Also preceding her in death was a son-in-law, Larry Thompson. 

Funeral services were held Dec. 30, 2005, at speedway Christian Church.  Burial was at Washington Park North Cemetery.  

Richard P. Smith

Richard Pershing Smith, 86, a resident of Baltimore, MD, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, in Lighthouse Senior Living Center at Baltimore, MD.

He was born March 29, 1919, at Circleville, a son of the late William Lester Smith and Beulah Calhoun Smith.

He retired from Eastern Stainless Steel in 1979.

His wife, Lora Clara Murphy Smith, preceded him in death Jan. 31, 2005.

He is survived by a daughter, Joanna Robbins of Knoxville, MD; a son, Earl R. Smith of Harrisonburg, VA; three sisters, Mary Huffman of Philadelphia, PA, Rebecca Keller of Cambridge City, IN, and Katherine Nelson of Charleston, SC; two brothers, Conway Smith of Circleville and William Lester Smith Jr. of Harrisonburg, VA; six grandchildren, Randy Edwards, Janelle Cullen, Janice Dschaak, Terry Kniceley, Kim Mitchell and Janna Colledge, guardian and caretaker; 14 great-grandchildren; Robert, Raymond, Austen, Brandi, Sarene Kamryn, Amie, Blake, Braden, Chad, Jordan, Megan, Brandon, Cody and Emma; and one great-great-grandchild, Alexander.

He was also preceded in death by one grandson, Jeffery Earl Smith; and one twin brother, Raymond Smith.

The Rev. John Oldman conducted the funeral Saturday at the Circleville Presbyterian Church.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton by Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Memorial donations may be made to Circleville Presbyterian Church c/o Jane Wilkins, PO Box 84, Riverton, WV 26814.

Forrest L. Shirey, 87

Forest L. "Poe" Shirey, 87, of Hedgesville, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2006, at his home.  

Born September 20 1918, in Boynton, PA, he was the son of the late Harry Shirey and Carrie Bowman Shirey.

Mr. Shirey  served in the US Navy during WWII and later became an iron worker, He was a member of Local 568 in Cumberland, MD.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Lorraine L. Sheppard Shirey of Hedgesville; four daughters Holler of Cresaptown, MD, Lillian A. Powell and husband, Paul of Ridgeley, Patty Bolton of Brandywine, Connie L. Markley and husband, Russell of Hedgesville; two brothers, Cliff Shirey of Cresaptown, MD, and Harry Shirey of Hainsville, FL; a sister, Ruby Shoemaker of Bedford, PA; seven grandchildren; and sex- great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce and Chancey Shirey; and one sister, Lillian Martz. 

Services were held Saturday at Rosedale Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with Pastor Dave Miller officiating. 

Interment followed at Rosedale Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by the Martinsburg Combined Honor Guard.  

Diane Evelyn Emerick 

Diane Evelyn Emerick, a beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, was born June 13, 1958. 

The Heavenly Father called her home on Jan. 21, 2006, where she had a beautiful reunion with her dad, Frank Jacob Emerick, her materanl grandmother, Evelyn Lambert, her paternal grandparents and other loved ones. 

There are many that loved her and are left behind, including her mom, Doris Emerick-Williams; her husband, don of Glencoe, PA; her brothers, Jerry Emerick and wife, Cheri of Spanish Fork , UT, and Jason Emerick and wife, Karen of Berlin, PA; her sisters, Debbie Anderson and husband, Scott of Bennion, UT, Donna Dively and husband, Randy of Berlin, PA, Darla Glessner and boyfriend, Gary Lewis of Glencoe, PA, and Kara Adami and husband, Steve of Ogden, UT.

Mrs. Emerick loved her 21 nieces and nephews and was never absent from ballgames, plays, concerts or anything they were involved in.  She also was the proud great-aunt of 14 great-nieces and nephews.  She leaves a large extended family as well , including her grandfather, Leslie Lambert, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was an active, faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  She also served on the AYSO board of Berlin, PA.  Until her illness, she was employed by New Enterprise Stone and Lime of Somerset, PA.  Her strength and courage the past 18 months amazed and inspired all.  She spent her last days being more concerned about her fmaily than she was for herself.    

Services were held Wednesday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in LaVale, MD.  Interment was at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Glencoe, PA.  

Emma Sponaugle, 83

Emma H. Sponaugle, 83, of Doe Hill, VA, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, VA.  

Mrs. Sponaugle was born July 10, 1922, in Kline and was the daughter of the late Hasper Amos and Anna MAry Ellen (Heavner) Hevener. 

She was a homemaker and was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church and the United Methodist women. 

On Feb. 4, 1948, she married John A. Sponaugle , who preceded her in death march 30, 1996. 

Mrs. Sponaugle was the last survivor of her immediate family. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Gail Hartbarger of Nokesville, VA; three sons, John H. Sponaugle and wife, Pam of Grottoes, VA, and James K. Sponaugle and wife, Caroline, and Harry B. Sponaugle and wife, Sharon, all of Doe Hill, VA; nine grandchildren, Sarah and Laura Beth Sponaugle, Michael and Matthew Sponaugle, Cathy James, Laci Sponagle, Mallory, John and David Hartbarger; and four sisters-in-law, Violet Hevener of Upper Tract, Mary Propst of Moyers, Deloris Sponaugle of Philippi and Mary Mae Sponaugle of Franklin. 

She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lilia Kay Sponaugle; two sisters, Lura Hevener and Jean Sponaugle; and two brothers, Paul and James Hevener. 

The Revs. Samuel Sponaugle and Dave Boger conducted the funeral Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  Burial will be at Blue Grass Cemetery.

Russell Newman, 89

Russell Newman, 89, of Moorefield died Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg. 

Born May 29, 1916, he was the son of the late Rev. B.F. Newman and Mae (Garrett) Newman. 

Mr. Newman worked for Ashland Oil Refining company for 30 years prior to his retirement in 1978.  He was a veteran of World War II, serving on various ships in the U.S. Navy throughout the South Pacific.  He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Wayne, WV, Chapter 18, Royal Arch Masons.  He was an avid golfer and sportsman in his retirement years, and he and his wife shared their time between their residence in Moorefield and their winter home in Bradenton, FL. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ruby (Murphy) Newman. 

He is survived by one sister, Helen Hendricks of Berea, KY: two sons, N. Russell Newman of Moorefield and William C. Newman of Pocasset, MA; and two granddaughters, Sue Ellen Gossard of Winchester, VA, and Becky Yokum of Upper Tract. 

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Buford and burl; and three sisters, Clarice, Lucille, and Louise. 

Funeral services were conducted at the Fraley Funeral Home, Moorefield, Tuesday with Pastor Ed Craft officiating.  Interment followed at the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield.

 Golda C. Wimer, 90

Golda Crigler Wimer, 90, of Franklin died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin. 

Mrs. Wimer was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Franklin and was the daughter of the late Harry Crigler and Nettie Arbogast Crigler. 

She retired from Hanover shoe company after 18 years of employment and had also worked in the Belle Meade Gift Shop in Harrisonburg, VA.  She was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian church. 

Her husband, Thomas Edwin Wimer, preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1963. 

Mrs. Wimer was the last survivor of her immediate family. 

She is survived by two sons, Edwin Wimer, Jr., of Franklin and Clark Nolan Wimer of Buford, GA; five grandchildren, Lori Ann De Moss, Tom Wimer, Elizabeth Armstrong, Dawn Haff and Clark Wimer, Jr.; and five great-grandchildren, Thomas Wimer, Philip Wimer, Justin Armstrong, Taylor Wolters and Joshua Huff. 

She also was preceded in death by five brothers, Richard Harry, Curtis, Ed and Virgil Crigler; and one sister, Fannie Crigler. 

The Rev. Carl Tribett and Pastor Susie Echols conducted the funeral Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton Nursing Home, the Cedar Hill Cemetery Paving Fund or the Pendleton County Rescue Squad.
