Mrs. Landes was born Oct. 21, 1917, in Sugar Grove and was a daughter of the late Daniel Franklin and Ida Florence Flesher Eckard.

She was a member of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church and retired from Cargill Poultry Plant.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth A. Landes of Verona, VA, and Roger L. Landes of Weyers Cave, VA; two daughters, Linda K. Legg of Bridgewater, VA, and Charlene Offenbacker of Weyers Cave, VA; a brother, James Eckard of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Sarah K. Oaks and Virginia Rhine, both of Greenville, TN; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Buddy Farris conducted the funeral Tuesday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial will follow at the Clover Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Kincaid was born Aug. 24, 1916, in Sugar Grove and was a daughter of the late John Olen Puffenbarger and Lucy Jane Simmons Puffenbarger.

She was employed at Genesco for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church in Churchville, VA.

Her husband, Russell Miller Kincaid, preceded her in death.

Survivors include four daughters, Lucy Plotner, Mary Clifton and Elizabeth "Libby" Clifton, all of Churchville, VA, and Iva Ailer of Staunton, VA; two sons, John Kincaid of Churchville, VA, and Russell Junior Kincaid of Stuarts Draft, VA; a sister, Alma Rawley of Mount Solon, VA; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Dennis Sites, the Rev. Frankie Hall and Bill Hinton conducted the funeral Tuesday at Jerusalem Chapel Church. Burial as at Green Hill Cemetery in Churchville, VA.

Bear funeral home Churchville, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements. 

Mr. May was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Fort Seybert and was a son of the late George Franklin May and Bessie Eye May.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, working on helicopters. He was a logger for over 40 years and was a farmer.

Mr. May was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Sugar Grove VFW Post No. 9666.

His wife, Arlene Hoover May, whom he married Feb. 9, 1946, survives.

Also surviving are a son, Willard R. and Ruthaleen May of Moyers; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn May and Mack Jones of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; a brother, Durwood May of Fort Seybert; a sister, Maxine Dahmer of Franklin; and four grandchildren, Stacy Thompson, JEremy, Bradley and Kayla May. 

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Violet Mumbert.

The Revs. Craig and Wendy Richter conducted the funeral at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Moyers. Burial was at St. John’s Church Cemetery.

Iva Lambert Sponaugle, 99, passed away at Parsons Residential Care in Chesapeake, VA, on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007. 

Born April 4, 1907, at Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Cora Eye Lambert. 

Her husband, R. McClure Sponaugle preceded her in death.  

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving son, Dr. H. Dale Sponaugle and wife, Orva, of Portsmouth, VA; a granddaughter, Susan Newsom and her husband, Dr. Roger W. Newsom of Virginia Beach, VA; a grandson, Patrick M. Sponaugle and wife, Lisa, of Germantown, MD; and five great-granddaughters; two nieces, Arvella Vandevander and June Lambert; and several nieces and nephews by marriage.

She was also predeceased by two brothers, R. Mahlon and Roy M. Lambert. 

A memorial service will be held March 10 at 10 a.m. at The Walnut Street United Methodist Church in Franklin. Inurnment will be in The Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made in her memory to The Walnut Street United Methodist Church, Franklin.

Joy (Harper) Hedrick Markley, 89, of Westminster, MD, and formerly of Maysville, died Wednesday Jan. 24, 2007 at the Carroll County Hospital in Westminster, MD.

Mrs. Markley was born Oct. 16, 1917, in Brood, Pendleton County, and was the daughter of the late Arthur Wesley and Clara Ann Mallow Harper.

She had worked for Hooper and Sons in Baltimore, MD, and was a cook at Maysville Elementary School. She attended the Lighthouse Community Church.

Her first husband, Lester H. Hedrick, preceded her in death Jan. 1, 1951. Her second husband, Harold L. Markley, preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1968.

Surviving are three sons, Herbert J. Hedrick and wife, Phyllis of Stephens City, VA, and Dallas T. Hedrick and Harman Hedrick, and wife, Sandra all of Maysville, W.Va.; two daughters, Bernice L. Vance and husband, Kenneth of Baltimore, MD, and Judy C. Nelson and husband, George of Westminster, MD; a sister, Jacqueline McDonald and husband, Stern of Levels; two brothers, Elwood Harper of Vienna, VA, and Chester Harper and wife, Norma of Elkins, W.Va., and 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  

She also was preceded in death by four sister, Mabel Mallow, Elva Harper, Ethel Sites and infant IOca Dora Harper; and four brothers, Esten Harper, Earl Harper, Harlen Harper and Stelman Harper.  .

The Rev. Joseph Eversole conducted the funeral Saturday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va. Burial was in the Mallow Cemetery on Timber Ridge Road in Riverton.

Elizabeth Maiden, 84, of Frank died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Life Care Center in New Market, VA.

Mrs. Maiden was born Aug. 20, 1922, at Stoney Bottom in Pocohontas County and was the daughter of the late Willie Burner and Marie Geiger Burner.

She was a resident of Brooklyn, NY, for 45 years and was an accountant.

Her husband, Ernest Maiden, preceded her in death in October 2005.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Hoeper of Silver Spring, MD; a son, Thomas Burner of Franklin; a sister, Mary Catherine Jenkins of Franklin; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Kevin Hand conduct the funeral Wednesday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Arbovale Cemetery, Arbovale.
