Thelma Getz, 76

Thelma Elizabeth (Calhoun) Getz, 76, Petersburg died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at her home after a long time illness. 

She was born on Jan. 26, 1932, in Ruddle and was the daughter of the late William C. "Bill" Calhoun and Dora (Judy) Calhoun.  

She and her husband owned and operated the family owned business, Calhoun's Country Store.  She was a member of the Bethel Church of the Brethren and Landes Ruritan.  She also was a member of the ladies auxiliaries of the VFW, American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. 

Her husband of 56 years, Harry D. Getz, survives. 

Also surviving are one son, Clarence J. "Sonny" Getz and wife, Shirley of Harrisonburg, VA; one grandson, John Wesley :"J.W." Getz of Norfolk, VA; one sister-in-law, Betty Calhoun of Romney; several nieces and nephews; extended family, Butch and Wanda Stump and family, Tim and Nettie Hall and family, Mark and Rhonda Mullenax, Mike and Roxann Nelson and Mark and Kathy Walters and family; and many other neighbors and friends.  

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by an infant grandson, David William Getz; one sister, Evelyn V. Hedrick; and two brothers, Vernon Clarence Calhoun and William Roy Calhoun.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Greg Rotruck and Rev. Dee C. Flory officiating.  Burial was in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville.  

Memorials may be made to Bethel Church of the Brethren, Grant Memorial Hospice or Landes Ruritan.  

Cleveland Smith, 76

Cleveland Roosevelt "Clink" Smith, 76, of Doe Hill, VA, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009.

He was born Dec. 3, 1932, in Churchville, VA, a son of the late Lester Smith and Meda Jane (Huffman) Helmick. 

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army and received a medal for being a sharpshooter and was stationed in Fairbanks, AK.  He was a member of the Doe Hill United Methodist Church.  He had worked at Vepco Pumped Storage Project for 12 years, at Hanover Shoe Factory for 17 years and in his younger years as a logger.  He was a hard worker, devoted husband and father and loved his visits with his grandchildren.   

His wife of 51 years, Doris Ann (Hull) Smith, survives. 

Also surviving are a son, Daniel Smith and wife, Sandie of Franklin; two daughters, Sharon Crider and husband, Danny of Brandywine, and Tamara Lambert and husband, Ronnie of Sugar Grove; five grandchildren, April Simmons and husband, Justin, Derek Crider, Breanna and Lacey Smith and Adrian Lambert; a sister, Marie Hayes of Butner, NC; and a half-sister, Margaret Borkman of Baltimore, MD. 

He was also preceded in death by a sister, two brothers and a half-brother. 

A private ceremony was held Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, with Rev. Dave Boger officiating. 

At his request, he was cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. 

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.  

Ann Derby, 88

A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, Jan.31, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. for Ann Derby, 99, at the Derby residence in Franklin. 

Mrs. Derby was a member of women's circle groups at Franklin Presbyterian Church and Main Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member.

She also belonged to Potomac Valley Garden Club, Franklin Home Demonstration Club and Daughters of the American REvolution. 

Mrs. Derby died peacefully at Pendleton Manor, Franklin, on Dec. 27, 2008.

Beverly Gardiner

Beverly Alma Moats Gardiner, 67, of Franklin passed away Jan. 25, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA. 

Born March 9, 1941, at Moatstown, she was a daughter of the late Albert S. and Emma Cleriece Beverly Moats. 

She was the president of the Progressive Civic Club, a member of the Entry Mountain AME Church and the Franklin Home Demonstration Club and participated in the community choir. 

For many years, she worked at Hanover Shoe Factory and Pendleton Nursing Home.  She was a homemaker and volunteered her services in the community.  

Her husband, Calvin Everett Lee Gardiner, preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1996.     

Surviving are two daughters, Ruth Charmayne Lynch and husband, Ron Lynch of Harrisonburg, VA, and Monica Denise Scott and husband, Eugene Scott of Staunton, VA; three sons, Michael Gardiner, Kent Gardiner and wife, Amy Gardiner, and Stacey Gardiner, all of Franklin; four sisters, Mary Grace Moats and Thelma Moats, both of Moyers, Cora Grandison of Strasburg, VA, and Elsie Barrow of Franklin; three brothers, Melvin Moats, Herman Moats and Earl Moats, all of Moyers; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.  

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Calvin Jeffrey Gardiner and Gregory Gardiner and two brothers, Gene Moats and Albert Lawrence Moats. 

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Rob Borror officiating.  Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin. 

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hazel Waggy

Hazel Belle Raines Waggy, 85, of Brandywine died Jan. 23, 2009, at PEndleton Manor in Franklin. 

Mrs. Waggy was born March 10, 1923, in Circleville and was the daughter of the late Ken Raines and Verna Lambert Raines. 

She was a factory worker and retired from Kawneer in Harrisonburg, VA.  She was a member of Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren and attended North Fork schools. 

Her husband, Curtis Marshall Waggy, died Feb. 5, 1984. 

Survivors include her niece and foster daughter, Tamara "Tammy" Burton and husband, Ken, of Woodinville, WA; two sons, Curtis Waggy, Jr., and wife, Kitty of Franklin, and Richard Hartley and wife, Debbie of Mason City, IA; one brother, Richard Raines and wife, Betty of Baltimore, MD: four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Berlie; and four sisters, Evelyn, Zona, Wilda and Mildred. 

Pastor Pat Godfrey conduct a graveside service Tuesday at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine. 

Memorials may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squads.
