Arveda M. Pritt

Arveda M. Pritt, 102, of Keyser passed away on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, around 3:30 a.m. at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.

Born June 14, 1907, in Reeds Creek, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Martha (Radar) Hartman.

Mrs. Pritt was a faithful member of the Keyser Church of the Brethren for over 60 years.  She worked at the Burlington Children’s Home from 1929 to 1940.  She was also an active member of various organizations that helped the community.

Her husband, D. R. Pritt, preceded her in death.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are one daughter, Genevieve Hampton of Marietta, GA; three step-children, Hilda Shoemaker of Newnan, GA, Robert E. Pritt of Fruit Land, UT, and Thomas E. Pritt of Kaysville, UT; 15 step-grandchildren; four foster grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by seven sisters, Bessie Thompson, Effie McCabe, Roxie Hartman, Edna Crock, Mary Murphy, Margie Crane and Annie Malcolm; and four brothers, Clarence, Elmer, Alva and James Hartman.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, with the Reverend Ron Wyrick officiating and assisted by Pastor Dwight Ramsey.  Interment followed in Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Keyser Church of the Brethren, 152 S. Main Street, Keyser, WV 26726.

Emma Christina Breeden

Emma Christine Breeden, 67, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Breeden was born on March 18, 1942, on Thorn Creek, near Franklin and was a daughter of the late Harvey and Zettie Whetzel Rexrode.

She worked for Byrd's Restaurant, New Frontier and Thompsons, all in the Franklin, and the Old Virginia Ham Cafe, the Lunch Counter of Roses Store and South Main St. Laundry.

On Jan. 21, 1996, she married Ronald Breeden, who preceded her in death on April 4, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Donald Phares of Harrisonburg, VA, and companion, Vicki Short of Lebanon, VA, and Rick Phares and companion, Marsha Crow of Linville, VA; a daughter, Sherry Wean and husband, Steven of Harrisonburg, VA; a sister, Alice Rexrode of Harrisonburg, VA; four grandchildren, Jolene Louderback, Steven Wean, Matthew Phares and Aspen Phares; and one great-grandson, Brandon Tucker.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby Eye, Florence Hedrick, Martha Rexrode and Margaret Wolfe.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Westside Baptist Church in Harrisonburg, VA, with the Revs. Ted Shultz and Troy Pearson officiating.  Burial followed at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg, VA.

Jack Lough Mullenax

Jack Lough Mullenax, 70, of New Creek and formerly of Franklin, died Jan. 22, 2010, at Heartland of Keyser in Keyser.

He was born July 23, 1939, at Franklin and was the son of the late Arlie E. Mullenax and Beulah Lough Mullenax.

Mr. Mullenax worked as a topographer for the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington, DC, and was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church, Sons of the Confederacy and the Pendleton County Historical Society.  He was a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961.

On Feb. 11, 1965, he married Nancy A. Hiser Mullenax, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jay Mullenax of North Carolina and Jon Mullenax of Dallas, TX; and five grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Mullenax.

Funeral services were held at Sunday at the chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Randy Ours officiating.  Interment was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin.

Brandon Leon Lantz

Brandon Leon Lantz, 18, of Elkton, VA, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, following a motor vehicle accident.

He was born Feb. 5, 1991, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was a son of Delbert "Leon" Lantz, Jr. and companion, Dana, and Angela "Michelle" Hutton Lantz and companion, Andy Good, all of Elkton, VA.

He attended Spotswood High School and graduated from Massanutten Technical Center and was a member of the Blue Ridge Independent Church near Elkton, VA.  He had been employed by McDonald's in Elkton, VA, and also performed landscaping.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Also surviving are two brothers, Matt Rexrode and Benjamin Mikel Good, both of Elkton, VA; two sisters, Ashley Renee Lantz and Courtney Dawn Lantz, both of Elkton, VA; step-brother and step-sister, Anthony Shifflett and Katie Francisco; girlfriend, Holly Terry; grandparents, Mike and Carolyn Hutton, Delbert Lantz, Sr. and Vivian Lantz, all of Elkton, VA; great-grandmothers, Bernice Hutton of Elkton, VA, and Dorothy Lantz of Penn Laird, VA; great-grandfather, Gene Hansbrough; uncles, Jeff Lantz, Sr. and wife, Lisa, and Mickey Hutton; aunt, Carrie Hutton; great-uncles, Ralph Lantz and wife, Ruth, and Eddie Lantz; nephew, Aidan Rexrode; and special cousins, Jeffrey Wayne Lantz, Jr., Lindsey Lantz, Matt Mowbray and Cassie Hutton.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Beverly Good; great-grandparents, Max Hutton, Sr., Bettie Hansbrough, Cecil and Minnie Shifflett and Dolan Lantz.

A funeral service will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at the Full Gospel Lighthouse Tabernacle near Elkton, VA, with the Rev. Homer Frazier, Pastor Ronald Spencer and Pastor Carter Dean officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Peters Cemetery near Elkton, VA.

Jane Ann Boggs Core

Jane Ann Boggs Core died on Jan. 18, 2010, after battling Multiple Sclerosis for over 30 years.

She was born in Franklin, the daughter of Dr. Richard and Dorothy Trumbo Boggs.

Mrs. Core was a graduate of Franklin High School, West Virginia University and held a Masters Degree from Case Western Reserve University in social work.  Her career in the mental health field spanned 30 years, mostly in Lake County, where she held various positions in Family Planning, Lake County Mental Health Center and University-Laurelwood.  She was also a long time associate of Dr. Roger Sherman, M.D. ending with his death in 1990.  She is remembered with fondness by generations of those she helped, as well as numerous co-workers, who knew her as a warm, giving, and highly skilled therapist.  Multiple Sclerosis ended her working career in 1999, but she was able to remain active in the equine sports with her favorite horse, Bene.  She has a very wide circle of friends in that sport and will be sorely missed, and throughout the wider community.

Her husband of 34 years, Harry Core, survives.

Also surviving are two brothers, Richard Boggs and Gene Boggs, both of Franklin; a daughter Jennifer Morse and husband, Gerald; a granddaughter Alexandra of Berea, KY; a son Brian Core and wife, Carolyn of Brighton, CO; and a step-son Kevin Core of San Antonio, TX.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home, Painesville, OH, with Rev. David R. Mason, PhD, professor of religious studies at John Carroll University and associate rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, OH, officiating.

The Rev. Bill Blackwell will conduct a memorial service and burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin, at a later date.

Patricia Turner Phillips

Patricia Ann Turner Phillips, 52, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Harrisonburg, VA, the daughter of Genevieve Bennett Turner of Riverton and Wayne Warner of Franklin.

She attended Circleville High School and was a cook, having worked at Country Cookin' and L & S Diner.

Her husband, Willard Phillips, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert Propst, Fulks Run, VA, and Jeremy Propst, Petersburg; and four grandchildren, Kyle Propst, Logan Propst, Tessa Propst and Alex Cassell.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Stanley Kile officiating.  Burial was in the Mallow Cemetery, Riverton.
