Donna J. Smith 

Donna Jean Smith, 43, of Upper Tract and formelry of Franklin, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, of ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, at the home of her daughters in Upper Tract. 

Ms. Smith was born Aug. 11, 1961, in De Funiak Springs, FL, and was a duaghter of lavaughn Gavin of Freeport, FL and the late Gloria Jean Cooper Counley 

She attended Franklin High School and was employed in the fitting department at the Franklin Shoe Company in Franklin.

In addition to her father, she is survived by two daughters, Tricia Lynn Good and husband, Keith, and Erica Dawn Smith, all of Upper Tract; a sister, Terry Lynn Kemp of Crestview, FL; an aunt, Constance Hurley of Crestview, FL, with whom she lived for many years.; a brother Michael Scott Gavin of Crestview, FL; and three grandchildren.   

The Rev. Cecil D. Bradfield conducted the funeral Sunday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Madeline Shifflet 

Madeline Shifflett, 61, of Franklin died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Franklin. 

She was born Jan. 3, 1944, in Fort Seybert and was a daughter of the late Roy Curtis Simmons and Martha Susan Hartman Simmons. 

She was a member of Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church, the Fort SEybert Home Demonstration Club and the Franklin Moose Lodge Ladies' Auxiliary.

Survivors include a special friend, S.M. "Mickey" Good of Grottoes, VA; three sisters, Marie Mitchell of Franklin, and Shirley Mitchell and Karen Warble, both of Harrisonburg, VA; three brothers, James Simmons, Randy Simmons and Olin Simmons, all of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.   

Pastor Randy Cosner conducted the funeral at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fort Seybert.

Douglas Nesselrodt

Douglas "Doug" Nesselrodt, 50, of Franklin, died Jan. 23, 2005, at his home.

Mr. Nesselrodt was born Dec. 29, 1954, at Harrisonburg, VA, and was the son of Bobby L. Nesselrodt and Thelma Samples Nesselrodt of Franklin.

He was owner and operator of Valley Electric in Franklin from 1974-1976. He worked for Virginia Power as  an instrument and control technician and later for Design Electric and as an electrical and instrumentation superintendent for Jacobs Engineering, both of Harrisonburg, VA.  He was a sheep and poultry farmer, operating South Branch Poultry. He also owned and operated Liberty Mountain Wood Products and South Branch Transport.

Mr. Nesselrodt was a member of Harper's Chapel United Methodist church, Pendleton Masonic Lodge, No. 144, and a 4-H leader, being selected Outstanding Leader of the Year and was a member of the Tri-County Fair Association, where he served on the board of directors.  He was also a member of the West Virginia Shepherd Association, West Virginia Poultry Association, 4-H All-Stars and was a West Virginia Golden Horseshoe winner.  

On July 4, 1975, he married Christina Chadock Nesselrodt, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Matt Nesselrodt and wife Andrea of Franklin and Kenny Nesselrodt of Blacksburg, VA; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Nesselrodt of Pendleton county Nursing Home in Franklin, and father and mother-in-law, Gerald and Vivian Chadock of Petersburg. 

The Revs. Richard Longbon and Andre Crummett conducted the funeral ?Wednesday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with Masonic graveside services by members o the Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 144 A.F.&A.M.

Funeral services were Jan. 28, at the Kimble Funeral Home chapel, Franklin, with interment in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin. Masonic graveside services were conducted by members of Pendleton Masonic Lodge #144 A.F. & A.M.

Iva L. Hupman 

Iva Lee Hupman, 93, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at a Charlottesville, VA, hospital. 

She was born Oct. 14, 1911, in Sugar Grove, the daughter of D.J. and Sally Simmons. 

Mrs. Hupman graduated from Bridgewater College, and was a teacher for 28 years, most of her career being with the Harrisonburg, City Schools.  She was a longtime member of the First Church of the Brethren.  Her last eight years were spent at Branchland Retirement Home in Charlottesville, VA.  

Though small in stature, she lived her long life to its fullest with a feisty spirit and a quick mind, which remained alert to the end. 

She will be missed by many, including a daughter, Carolyn Beach, and husband, David; a granddaughter, Tracy McCurdy, and husband, Michael; and two great-grandchildren; a grandson; three sister, Mary Emott, Catherine Mauzy and Edna Clemente; and a large group of nieces and nephews.  

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Hupman; two sisters, Cleda Simmons and Erma Cavanaugh; and two brothers, Clyde Simmons and Garland Simmons.  

A memorial service was held at the First Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg, VA, on Saturday, followed by a gathering of family and friends at her duaghter's home in Charlottesville, VA. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. 

Hill & Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville, VA, was in charge of arrangements.  

Roy A. Mitchell 

Roy Abraham Mitchell, 77, of Franklin died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at his home. 

Mr. Mitchell was born May 2, 1927, in Kline and was a son of the late Charles Mitchell and Ina Mae Kesner Mitchell. 

He was an Army veteran and retired from Dunham-Bush in Harrisonburg, VA, after 20 years of service.  He was a member of South Mill Church of the Brethren.  

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathleen Hartman Mitchell; two daughters, Doreen Faye Turner of Port Republic, VA, and Delores Jean lam of Franklin; a son, Roy Steven Mitchell of Franklin; two sisters, Leota Grogg of Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin and Hazel Rexrode of Avante Nursing Home in Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers, Charles Jr. Mitchell of Franklin and Stanley Mitchell of Port Republic, VA; 10 grandchildren, Shannon Hensley, Michael Mitchell, LaRee Slusser, Ryan Mitchell, T.J. Mitchell, Konja Lam, Kevin Roy Mitchell, Michelle Mitchell, Jessica Mitchell, Brittany Anderson and Bethany Mitchell; four great-grandchildren; Tye Mitchell, Taylor Mitchell, Jaxson Mitchell and Reagan Anderson; one step-grandson, Daniel Wright; one step-great-granddaughter, Katie Anderson; and three pet dogs, Sassy, Fluffy and Mitzi.  

He was also preceded in death by one son, George Kevin Mitchell; three brothers, Roland, Raymond and Cletus R. Mitchell; and one sister, Mable Riggleman.  

Bishop David Hartman and Pastor Dan Ludwick conducted the funeral Monday at the Basagic Fuenral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Propst Family Cemetery.

William Simmons Sr., 85

William Glen Simmons Sr., 85, of New market, VA, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005.  

Mr. Simmons was born may 6, 1919, in Kline and was a son of the late Pearlie C. and Mary Smith Simmons.  

HE retired as service manager from Brown's Tyson Dodge. 

His wife, Della Virginia Simmons, preceded him in death. 

Survivors include his companion, Beatrice Biller of New Market, VA; a son , William Glen Simmons Jr. of Vero Beach , FL; a daughter, Carolyn J. Kingree of Edinburg, VA; a step-daughter, Virginia Benson of Chantilly, VA; a sister, Mamie Armentrout of Baltimore, MD; a brother, Earl Simmons of Waynesboro, VA; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Wednesday at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock, VA.  Burial was at Union Forge Cemetery,

Wanda Puffenbarger, 64

Wanda Mohela "Moe" Puffenbarger, 64, of Timberville, VA, died Monday, Jan. 24 2005, at LIfe Care Center in New Market, VA

Ms. Puffenbarger was born Dec. 22, 1940, in Brandywine and was a duaghter of the late John P. and Belva Cagle Puffenbarger.  She was a member of the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren in Brandywine and attended Calvary Baptist church in Timberville, Va.  She graduated from Franklin High School in 1959 and attended Madison College (JMU). She was employed at Rockingham Poultry and WLR Foods from January 1968 until October 2000.

Survivors include a half brother, John Puffenbarger of Fairfield, VA; two half sisters, Elsie Cowger of Lafayette, LA, and Lorraine Myers of New Smyrma Beach, FL.

H. Garth Bodkin

H. Garth Bodkin, 78, of Apopka, FL, died early Sunday, January 23, 2005, after a long battle with heart disease.  He passed at his daughter's home in Chapel Hill, NC, surrounded by his loving family. 

Mr. Bodkin was the son of the late Joseph Bodkins and Nellie Painter Bodkin.  

He was a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II and a member of the Center of Faith Church, Apopka, FL.  He retired from Consolidated Freight was for over 46 years of service.  

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Lambert, two sons, Garth Bodkin of Lunenburg, MA, and Steve Bodkin of Hudson, MA, and a daughter, Debra Bodkin Cullen, and husband, Michael of Chapel Hill , NC; a brother, Norlyn Bodkin and wife Paige of Harrisonburg, VA; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Kymberly and Sadie Bodkin of Worcester, MA; brothers-in-law Sterle Lambert and wife, Joy of Upper Tract, and Ron Lambert and wife Corrine of Moorefield; and sister-in-law, Nancy Fulk of Enola, PA.  

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, at the chapel of the Cross, 304 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC.

Olin Smith, Jr., 71

Olin Frederick "Sonny" Smith Jr., 71, of Petersburg, died Jan. 20, 2005, at Heartland of Keyser, Keyser.

Mr. Smith was born July 5, 1933, in Ruddle and was the son of the late Olin Frederick Smith Sr. and Margaret Pauline Miller Smith.

He graduated from Franklin High School and served in the 317th Engineer Battalion U.S. Army.  He attended the Seventh Army NCO Academy in Munich, Germany, and received the Good Conduct Medal.  He was a member of American Legion Post 78 of Petersburg.

Mr. Smith was supervisor for transportation for Montgomery County in Gaithersburg, MD.  He lived in Rockville, MD, for 32 years  and after his retirement he moved to Petersburg in 1995.  He attended the Potomac Valley Baptist Church.  

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Betty L. Alt Smith; a daughter, Monnie Johnson and husband Greg of Gaithersburg, MD; two sisters, Lucy Gae Propst and husband Delbert of Brandywine, and Beulah Hoover and husband, Jerry of College Park, MD; three brothers, Gerald Smith and wife, Mary Lee of Laurel, MD, Jimmie D. Smith and wife, Betty of Harrisonburg, VA, and Gene W. Smith and wife, Pat of Brandywine; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special great-great-niece, Andria Bucklew of Moorefield.

The Revs. Ted Anderson and Stanley Kile conducted the funeral Monday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at the Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper tract with military honors by the combined veterans organizations of Grant County and the JROTC.

Martha Leana Pitsenbarger 

Martha Leana Pitsenbarger, 70, of East lake, OH, died Jan. 4, 2005, at lake West Hospital in Willoughby, OH, after a long illness.  

Born May 25, 1934, In Riverton, she was the daughter of the late Walter Warner and Mamie Harper Warner.  

she lived in Cleveland, OH, before moving to Eastlake, OH, 18 years ago. 

She was a member of the King of Kings Lutheran Church in Willoughby, OH, since 1999.  She was baptized in the name of the Triune God. She publicly confessed her faith in the Savior through the trite of confirmation. 

She was married to Rembert Pitsenbarger on Dec. 3, 1954.  She and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and renewed their marriage vows before their extended family and friends on Nov. 27, 2004. 

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter and son-in-law, Charolett and Ronald Marshall; a granddaughter; two brothers, Jack Warner of Riverton and Jim Warner of Onego; two sisters, Alice Cowger of Franklin and Grace Moody of Newark OH; and several nieces and nephews.   

She also was preceded in death by one grandson, one sister, Nellie Warner, and one brother, Harmon "Bob" Warner.  

Funeral services were conducted  Jan. 6 at the Monreal Funeral Home, Willoughby, OH, with the Rev. Paul Schmiege officiating.  Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmstead, OH.
