B. Wright Harper

B. Wright Harper, age 88, of Riverton, WV, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born at Macksville, on January 1, 1924, the son of the late Mason Philip and Sally Kate Lawrence Harper.

Mr. Harper attended Cave Schoolhouse and Circleville High School. He was a Farmer, a member of the Pendleton County Farm Bureau, and a member of High Rock United Methodist Church.

On May 19, 1950, Wright married Betty Jane Hedrick and she preceded him in death on June 27, 2006.

Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Funk and Michael of Rowlesburg, Lucy Kisamore and Danny of Riverton; two sons, Merlin Harper and Gena of Riverton, Berlin Harper and Debbie of Seneca Rocks; a sister, Leona Leach of Flemington; nine grandchildren, four step grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and five step great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Roscoe; and a sister, Norma Black.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the High Rock United Methodist Church, Seneca Rocks with Rev. Robert Baer and Pastor Barbara Rexroad officiating. Interment was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Jerry William Alt

Mr. Jerry William Alt, 70, of Upper Tract died Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Falling Waters.

He was born February 25, 1941 at Brushy Run and was the son of Imogene S. Alt of Baltimore, MD and the late Melvin D. Alt.

Mr. Alt attended the Alt Schoolhouse and was a 1958 graduate of Southern High School in Baltimore, MD. He was a truck driver, a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Alaska from 1958 - 1961 and attended church services at Wilson Chapel. Happiest behind the wheel of his big-rig, when he wasn't on the road, he enjoyed his garden, his dogs and watching deer from his porch.

His wife, Linda Berg Alt, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Sherrie and husband, Andy Shaffer of Griffin, GA, Cindy and husband, Patrick Rogan of Westminster, MD; one son, Steve Alt of Spartanburg, SC; two sisters, Polly and husband, Robert Gardenghi of Baltimore, MD, Judith Wiley of Baltimore, MD; one brother, Joseph and wife, Lula Alt of Baltimore, MD; Five grandchildren, Michael and wife, Chelsea, Jared, Sabrina and husband, Tom Danielle Arieana; Four great-grandchildren, Logan, Alyssa, Riley, Bailey.

He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Edward Wiley.

Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 AM at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. Burial will be at Wilson Chapel Cemetery on Jake Hill Road.

Retha “Mae” Steele

Mrs. Retha "Mae" Hoover Eye Steele, 89, formerly of Brandywine, West Virginia, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

She was born June 6, 1922 at Brandywine, and was the daughter of the late Harry "Tut" Hoover and Nellie Eye Hoover.

Mrs. Steele was a cook for 25 years at Osborne High School in Manassas, VA and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Eye and her second husband, Dan Steele.

Surviving are, three sons, David and wife, Nancy Eye of Vacaville, CA, Wesley and wife, Debby Eye of Sugar Grove, Bobbie and wife, Mary Eye of Holliday Hills, IL; one sister, Mabel Harold of Franklin; twelve grandchildren; twenty-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Jerry Eye; one daughter, Nellie King; two brothers, Charles Hoover and Wilson Hoover; two sisters, Corean Kile and Dorothy Kile; one half-brother, Virgil Hoover and one half-sister, Beck Hoover.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, with Pastor Pat Godfrey officiating.

William Mitchell, 96

William Curtis Mitchell William Curtis Mitchell, died on January 20, 2012 in Burke, Va.

Born Jan. 8, 1916 at Sugar Grove, he was the son of the late Nadie Florence Wilfong and James Harve Mitchell.

He was a resident of Prince William County for 65 years. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and was active in ARC of Greater Prince William County.

His wife, Mary E. Mitchell preceded him in death.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Tanguay; two sons, James Mitchell and his wife Patricia, and Garry Mitchell and three grandchildren, Mathew, Robin, and Michael.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, Va.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, Woodbridge, VA.
