Lacy E. Smith, 95, of Franklin, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Smith was born May 16, 1911, in Ruddle  and was the son of the late Jared Branson Smith and Ida Virginia Waggy Smith.

He was a farmer and was a member of Friends Run Church of the Brethren.

On June 16, 1936, he married Ethel Ruddle, who preceded him in death Jan. 20, 1983.

Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Shyrl R. Smith and wife, Betty, and Gail E. Smith and wife, Betty, all of Franklin; a sister, Thelma Greenhalgh of Newport News, VA; a special daughter-in-law, Gail Gregory Smith of Staunton, VA; five grandchildren, Bradley S. Smith, Larry Smith, Jerry Smith, Randal C. Smith and Louise Landis; and six great-grandchildren.

Pastors Daryl Ritchie and Sam Harper conducted the funeral Monday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Nettie Memorial Chapel Cemetery at Reeds Creek.

Stanley L. Craig

Stanley Lewis Craig, 76 of Franklin, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Craig was born Feb. 21, 1930, in Deer Run and was the son of Rexie Craig and Mabel Thelma Ruddle Craig.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1948. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was a poultry and cattle farmer, and was a partner in Eye and Craig Ford Implement Supply.  He was a faithful member of the Franklin United Methodist Church. 

On Oct. 3, 1953, he married the former Elaine Eye, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Doris Ann Dove of Mozer, and Mary Beth Lambert and husband, Mark of Upper Tract; and five grandchildren, Clifton,and Beth Lynn Dove and Jesse, Jacob and Jared Lambert.  .

The Rev. Carl Tribett conducted the funeral Sunday at the Franklin United Methodist Church. Burial with military rites by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin United Methodist Church or the Pendleton County Rescue Squad.

Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, was in charge of funeral arrangements.  

Mr. Bland was born Oct 17, 1925, in Riverton and was a son of the late Frank Lester Bland and Zona Jordan Bland.

He had served in the Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946 on a Destroyer.  He did construction work and built houses.  He was the owner and operator of Blands Grocery and Campground for 30 years.  He was a member of the Circleville Presbyterian Church.

On Jan. 23, 1948, in Washington, DC, he married the former Mary Catherine Bennett, who survives. 

Also surviving are two daughters, Linda E. Bland Shull of Bridgewater, VA, and Jane Elizabeth Simon of Fort Seybert; a sister, Nellie Bland Cross of Williamsburg, VA; a brother, Ray Martin Bland of Circleville.; six grandchildren, Eric Turner and wife, Kim, Teresa Craig and husband, Mark, Stephanie Tichenor, Ralph Shull, II, and wife, Diane, Edward Simon and wife, Kim, and Michelle Simon; 10 great-grandchildren, Kali Tichenor, Christopher Turner, Hunter Turner, Marissa Harris, Tyler Simon, Megan Simon, Mackenzie Shull, Brandon Simon, Kaitlyn Craig and Kacie Simon; one step-granddaughter, Sundae Warner; and one step-great-granddaughter, Allison Warner.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, John Bland. 

The Revs. Bill Cox and Will Vaus conducted the funeral Wednesday at the Circleville Presbyterian Church. Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton with military honors by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Mason D. Mallow

Mason Daniel Mallow, 85, of Baltimore, MD, and formerly of Circleville, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in Circleville.

Mr. Mallow was born May 14, 1921, in Circleville and was the son of the late Isaac Austin and Marie Judith Judy Mallow.

He graduated from Circleville High School and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp No. 519 from 1940 to 1942. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He had retired as a power plant engineer for Armco Steel and the B&O Railroad.

He married the former Kathleen Louise Young; she preceded him in death in 1989.

Surviving are a son, Thomas Isaac Mallow of Glenville, PA, a sister, Genevieve Wimer of Circleville, a brother, Charles Mallow of Boyer, and one granddaughter, Melissa.

He also was preceded in death by one grandson, Jason Mallow; three brothers, Wayne Wade and Ben Mallow; and one sister, Mable Judy Vandevander. 

The Rev. Stanley Kile will conduct the funeral Saturday in the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial with military honors by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard was Monday in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Glen Burnie, MD.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Fork Fire Volunteer Fire Department.

Thelma L. Hedrick

Thelma Leona Mowery Hedrick, 77, of Franklin, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Hedrick was born Nov. 18, 1929, in Reeds Creek and was a daughter of the late Dayton Mowery and Edith Streets Mowery.

She attended Franklin High School and was a member of Reed’s Creek United Methodist Church. She was a supervisor in the fitting room at Hanover Shoe Factory and retired after 28 years of employment.

On Sept. 24, 1955, she married Luther Roy Hedrick, who survives. They were married 51 years.

She is also survived by a son, Michael R. Hedrick and wife, Pam of Franklin; three sisters, Mabel Flanagan of Newark, OH, Viola "Toots" Shreve of Petersburg, and Nancy Sites of Upper Tract; three brothers, Orville Mowery and Delbert Mowery, both of Upper Tract, and Maurice "Tom" Mowery of Petersburg, and one grandson, Jeremy Hedrick.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Gordon D, "Trig" Mowery; and five infant brothers and sisters.

The Rev. Gary Phillips will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, W.Va. Burial will be at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Memorial donations may be made to Reed’s Creek Church Building Fund, Mountain Hospice or the Pendleton County Rescue Squad.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

John C. Smith Jr.

John Calvin Smith Jr., 85, of Circleville, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, in Brandywine, at the home of his nephew, Charles Crigler.

Mr. Smith was born April 16, 1921, in Glady and was the son of the late John Calvin Smith Sr. and Myrtle Kline Smith.

He graduated from Circleville High School in 1941. He joined the Air Force (Army Air Corps) during WWII and retired after serving 20 years. He served an additional 20 years as a civilian aircraft mechanic in Cherry Point, NC and returned to Circleville in 1982.

Mr. Smith served two terms on the Pendleton County Board of Education from 1986-1994. He volunteered at Circleville Elementary School for 15 years and was a member of the Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Daniels Smith, whom he married March 9, 1955.

Survivors include a brother, Dixie Smith of Lutz, FL, and a number of nieces and nephews, including a special nephew and his wife, Charles and Debbie Crigler of Brandywine.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.  

The Rev. Mark McAllister conducted a graveside service Wednesday at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin, with military honors by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Dice Hedrick, 79

Dice Hedrick, 79, of Coshocton, OH, died Jan. 16, 2007, at the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital, Coshocton, OH. 

He was born July 31, 1927, in Maxville [Macksville] to the late Solomon Baxter and Artie (Miller) Hedrick. 

He was a farmer and a member of the Coshocton County Farm Bureau and enjoyed his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rolla Grace (Harmon) Hedrick, whom he married May 19, 1961.  she died May 13, 1996.  

He is survived by two sons, David Hedrick of Coshocton, OH, and Dale (Kim) Hedrick of Warsaw, OH; four grandchildren, Jodi (Jim) Nash, Jon, Kaili and Clinton Hedrick; a great-grandson, Walter Dice Hedrick Nash; a sister, Ella Griffith of Washington, DC; four brothers, Roy Hedrick of Virginia, Hugh Hedrick of Coshocton, OH, Hansel Hedrick of Riverton and Joe Hedrick of Seneca Rocks; and many nieces and nephews.  

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Harper and Hazel Hedrick, and a brother, Donnie Hedrick. 

Funeral services were held Friday at the Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw, OH, with Rev. DAvid Fowls officiating.  Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery at Warsaw, OH.
