Jack Bland, 84, Riverton, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Bland was born Oct. 13, 1916 , at Riverton and was a son of the late Seymour Bland and Lara Burns Bland.

He was a farmer, a WWII US Army veteran and retired from the US Forest Service in 1981. He also did road maintenance for 25 years. He was a member of the Solomon chapel United Methodist church and the Rock Caverns VFW No. 6862.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline Hazel Sponaugle Bland; one daughter, Debbie Burns, Riverton; three sons, Bobby Jack Bland and Denny Bland, both of Riverton, and Wayne Bland, Baltimore MD; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Don Bland and Ralph Bland, and four sisters, Rettie Huffman, Mary Bland, Merlie Everly and Sallie Judy.

The Rev. Greg Bland will conduct the funeral at 11:00 Friday at the Chapel of Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Interment will follow at the Burns Cemetery in Riverton.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton Nursing Home Landscape Fund.

Gladys Susan Lambert, 91, Seneca Rocks, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Lambert was born Nov. 21, 1909 in Riverton and was a daughter of the late John Harper and Eva Bennett Harper.

She was a homemaker and a member of High Rock United Methodist church.

On Oct. 31, 1924, she married Otis Gary Lambert, who died Sept. 26, 1988.

She is survived by six daughters, Katie Smith, Nashport, OH, Betty Spradlin, Charleston, Ethel Brinkley, Camp springs, MD, Irene Gray, Melborne Fl, and Mona Kisamore, Seneca Rocks; five sons, Keith Lambert, Lafayette, IN, Harper Lambert, Newark, OH, Harold E. "Eddie" Lambert, Seneca Rocks, Carl Lambert, St. Louisville, OH and Johnny Lambert, Stuart, VA; one sister, Billie Harper, Seneca Rocks; two brothers Edward Harper, Harleysville, Pa and Johnnie Harper, Ocala, FL; 37 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Worth, Mike and Earl Harper, and one sister Ruby Hedrick.

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at North Fork Memorial Park in Riverton.

Bruce J. Bennett, 72 of Cleveland, OH, passed away at Fairview Hospital on December 11, 2000.

He was born on December 20, 1928, to Robert C. "Buzz Bennett and Myrtle Warner Bennett, Cherry Grove.

He was a US Army veteran during the Korean War. HE worked for the Ford Motor Co., until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Ann Bennett of California, his father, Robert, brother, Raymond, a sister, Bernice, all of West Virginia, and his step-father, Beed Sponaugle of Baltimore, MD.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores (nee Nader) of the home, a daughter, Betty Bennett and husband, Robert, Clearmountain, CA; two grandchildren, Alexandria and Lindsay Jackson of California, his mother, Myrtle Bennett Sponaugle of Balto; three sisters, Bertie Maloney of California, Arlene Fisher of North Carolina, and Shirley Heffner of Balto.

Funeral services were by Yurch Funeral Home of Parma, OH. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Cleveland, OH.

Annie Ruth Painter, 87, Harrisonburg, VA, died Friday Jan. 19, 2001, at Orange Park Medical Center in Florida. She had lived at Moose Haven in Florida for the past two years.

Mrs. Painter was born Jan. 5, 1914, in Sugar Grove and was the daughter of the late John Eye and Mary Florence Hoover Mitchell.

She moved to Harrisonburg, VA, in 1928 and was a member of the Peoples Baptist Church. She was employed at Brockway Plastics for 19 years, the Elks Lodge for 14 years and the Moose Lodge for six years.

Her husband, Lewis James Painter, preceded her in death in July, 1988.

She is survived by a daughter, Anna Belle Bradburn, Harrisonburg, VA; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Pastor Roy Vanscoy will conduct graveside services at 2 p.m. Friday at Rest Haven Cemetery in Harrisonburg, VA.

Violet Macie Mumbert, 76 of Port Republic, VA, died on Friday, January 19, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, of injuries suffered in a traffic accident in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Mumbert was born July 6, 1924, and raised in Fort Seybert and was a daughter of the late George and Bessie Eye May.

She attended and graduated from Franklin High School in Pendleton County.

On Jun 26, 1948, she married Fred Mumbert and moved shortly thereafter to the outskirts of Harrisonburg, Va. There she became, as we know, a devoted wife, dedicated homemaker, and loving mother of five.

A full-time and compassionate caregiver to all, Mrs. Mumbert was an active member of the Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren for over 45 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carla Frazier in December, 1999.

She is survived (with deepest regrets yet fondest memories) by her husband, Fred Mumbert; four sons, Neal Mumbert of Orlando, FL, Brent Mumbert of Harrisonburg, VA, Alan Mumbert of Pasadena, MD and Mark Mumbert of Keller, TX, one sister Maxine Dahmer of Franklin; two brothers, Conway May of Moyers and Durwood May of Ft. Seybert; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services were conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren by Revs. Richard J. Hall and Olen Landes. Private burial was held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg, VA.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA.

Evelyn Mary Hendrickson, 84, Petersburg, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at the Hampshire Center in Romney.

Mrs. Hendrickson was born March 9, 1916 in Ruddle and was a daughter of the late Jared Smith and Ida Waggy Smith.

She retired as a cook at Grant Memorial Hospital in 1990 and was a member of the Memorial Church of the Brethren. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Eastern Star, American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary.

Her husband, Henry Ellsworth Hendrickson, died Feb. 7. 1997.

Surviving are a son, Roy Hendrickson, Petersburg; two sisters, Thelma Greenhalgh, Newport News, VA, and Arlene Brisson, Richmond, VA; two brothers, Eston Smith, Upper Tract, and lacy Smith, Franklin; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Raymond and four sisters, Beulah Bible Lorraine Sites, Myrtle Bible and Edith Lambert.

The Rev. Raymer Cox conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.

Memorial donations may be made to the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company Ladies' Auxiliary, the Petersburg Easter Star or the Memorial Church of the Brethren.
