Leslie Harper, 85

Leslie Rexrode 'Les' Harper, 85, of Waynesboro, VA, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, VA. 

He was born Sept. 7, 1923, in Cave, a son of the late George Earl and Lena Mae Rexrode Harper. 

He was a long-time member of the Basic United Methodist Church, where he was active in various capacities.  A veteran of the Marine Corps, serving during WW II, he was a civic minded citizen.  He was a retired bank manager and was an active member of the Masonic Lee Lodge No. 209 of Waynesboro, VA, and the Scottish Rite in Fork Union.  He was a taxidermy hobbyist.  

His wife of 58 years, Caroline Carr Harper, of Waynesboro, VA, survives. 

Also surviving are two sisters, Kathryn M. Humphreys and husband, Bill of Waynesboro, VA, and Mary June Brown of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Leo C. Harper of San Antonio, TX, and Robert E. Harper and wife, Lina of Fishersville, VA; a special uncle, Edward Furr; four nieces and their husbands, Sharon and David Johnson, Sara and Wendell Alexander, Stacey and Darrell Hayes and Mary Donna and Steve Olsen; and two nephews, Jay Humphreys, IV, and wife, Meg, and Phillip Harper. 

A memorial service was conducted Wednesday at Basic United Methodist Church by Rev. Don Gibson and Rev. Larry Nolff.  Interment was in Riverview Cemetery, Waynesboro, VA, with a Masonic service by Lee Lodge No. 209 and honors conducted by the Stuarts Draft VFW Post #9339.

Homer Allen Lantz

Homer Allen Lantz, 70, of Maysville died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg. 

He was born on Feb. 2, 1938, in Milam and was the son of the late RAchel A. (Lantz) Nesselrodt. 

Mr. Lantz was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Petersburg.  

His wife, Mary E. (Self) Lantz, formerly of Smoke Hole, survives. 

Also surviving are one son, Allen William (Bill) Lantz and wife, Tina of Harpers Ferry; three daughters, Nellie (Lantz) Prisby and husband, David of Hedgesville, Ruth Ann Lantz of Maysville, and CArolyn Lantz and husband, John Reckner of Gerrardstown; six grandchildren, John Rckner, Jr., Victoria Prisby, Blake, Mason, Kaitlyn and Lauren Lantz; four brothers, Paul Ketterman of Petersburg, Connie Ketterman of Romney, Michael Kesner of Winchester, VA, and Melvin Kesner, Jr., of Hinesville, GA; five sisters: Leta Make (Nesselrodt) Shirk of Dorcas, Irene (Kesner) Weber, JoAnn (Kesner) Kneiss and Judy Kesner, all of Berkeley Springs, and JEan (Kesner) Colley of Glen Burnie, MD; and his special family the Walter Whetzel family. 

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Allen Dale Lantz; and one daughter, Shirley Lou Lantz.  

Funeral services were held Monday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Elder Richard Whetzel and Bishop Steve Kimble officiating.  Burial was in the Kimble Family Cemetery, Smoke Hole.

Martha Showalter, 90

Martha Elizabeth Brunk Showalter, 90, of Harrisonburg, VA, died peacefully, in her sleep Jan. 14, 2009, with family by her side. 

She was born Feb. 20, 1918, a twin and the daughter of the late Gabriel and Dora Mosier Brunk, in Allen County, Elida, OH. 

She was the last surviving family member of ten children. 

She accepted the Lord as her Savior at a young age and was a member of the Pike Mennonite church, after having served with her husband in various mission and volunteer service assignments.  She was a homemaker, and after the children were married she was involved in home care for various community friends.  She also cared for Marguerite Davis in her home from September 1983 to June 2002.  As hobbies, she enjoyed making ceramics to give to her children, grandchildren and friends, and she also enjoyed crocheting (scrubbies by the dozens), sewing and reading. 

She had lived in her own home with supervised care for the past five years by daughter, Leanna, and James Rhodes until Dec. 13, 2008, when she was moved to her daughter's, REba and Raymond Brunk's, residence in Dayton, VA, where she was cared for by her family until her death. 

On Nov. 28, 1940, she married Hubert Daniel Showalter, who preceded her in death March 25, 1983. 

Surviving are nine children, Violet Ropp and Christian of Brunner, Ontario, Canada, Helen Bear and Daniel of Timberville, VA, Reba Brunk and Raymond of Dayton, VA, Larry and Rhoda (Knicely) Showalter of Onego, Leon and Janet (Harold) Showalter of Spring Creek, VA, Leanna Rhodes and James of Harrisonburg, VA, Dora Ivanitsky and Serge of Salem, OR, Nelson and Marie (Rodes) Showalter of Port Republic, VA, and Alvin and Debra (Heatwole) Showalter of Mount Crawford, VA; 32 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Roy and Mary Kathryn (Martin) Showalter of Harrisonburg, VA; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Waneta Rose; and a grandson, Menno Karel Ropp. 

Funeral service was held Sunday at the Pike Mennonite Church. Interment was in the Pike Church cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Puerto Rico Mennonite Missions, Gospel Sunrise or the charity of one's choice. 

Johnson Funeral Service, Bridgewater, VA, was in charge of arrangements.

Leslie Steele, 48

A memorial service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Turner Ashby High School, Bridgewater, VA, for Leslie Gale Steele, 48, of Broadway, VA. 

A reception will follow. 

Mr. Steele passed away Jan. 4, 2009, in Denver City, TX.

Herman Kimble, 94

Herman L. Kimble, 94, departed this life at 3:50 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Serenity Care Home, where he was a resident. 

He was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Grant County, the son of the late Arthur and Zella Kimble. 

Mr. Kimble was employed by the F.C. Cook Lumber Company and later by the City of Buckhannon as the street commissioner.  

He was a member of the First United Methodist in Buckhannon, where he attended Sunday School and worship and was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.  He loved the outdoors and enjoyed his vegetable garden, giving much of his produce to neighbors, family and friends.  In his later years, his winters were spent looking at seed catalogues and planning next year's crops.  

On Dec. 24, 1938, he married Bessie V. Alt, formerly of Pendleton County, who survives. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jerry L. Kimble and wife, Patty, William M. "Bill Kimble and wife, Sharon and Wayne L. Kimble and wife Diane, all of Buckhannon; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Kimble  of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lenford Kimble; and three sisters, Gerna Feaster, Opal Alt and Annie Kimble, all of Petersburg. 

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Damon Rhodes officiating.  Burial will follow in the South Branch Memorial Gardens in Petersburg.
