Irene Pennington, 74

Mrs. Irene Kinsreda Pennington, 74, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.  She had been in Avante of Harrisonburg for the past year.

Irene was born in Onego on June 30, 1934, and was a daughter of the late John and Katie Bland Pennington.

She is survived by her former husband, William Grogg, Sr., father of the children, two sons, Jennings Grogg and wife, Teresa of Bridgewater, VA, William (Billy) Grogg, Jr., and wife, Debbie of Hinton, VA; two sisters, Lorraine Losh and husband, Ronnie of Dayton, VA, and Lee Brown of Harrisonburg, VA, a brother, Virgil Pennington and wife, Georgia of Singers Glen, VA; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was conducted Friday at Rawley Spring Church Cemetery with the Rev. Zack Pennington officiating.

Larry Westfall, 54

Larry Allen Westfall, 54 of Broadway, VA, died Jan. 8, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 21, 1954, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was a son of Lena Wampler Westfall of Broadway, VA, and the late Walter Westfall, of Pendleton County.

He was employed by the City of Harrisonburg as a clerk for central stores.  He had worked at Shenandoah Manufacturing for 30 years.  He was a member of Mt. Grove Church of the Brethren in Fulks Run and attended Grace Mennonite Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two sons, Michael Westfall of Tenth Legion, Wesley Westfall of Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers, Wayne Westfall of Fredericksburg, VA, Billy Wesetfall of New Market, VA; a sister, Carolyn Keister of Broadway, VA; and three grandchildren, Sabrina, Tanner, Aedan.

Jerry  Shiflet and Rev. Sonny Dodds conducted a funeral service Sunday at Mt. Grove Church of the Brethren.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mark R. Wenger, 87

Mark Reiter Wenger, 87, of Pinnacle, NC, passed away, Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at his residence. 

Mr. Wenger was born on Aug. 15, 1921, in Rockingham County, VA, and was the son of the late C.D. and Bessie Reiter Wenger.

He was retired building contractor and a member of the Bank Mennonite church.

On Dec. 7, 1944, he married Eunice Heatwole Wenger, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Erma Elaine Wenger of Hyden, KY, Ellen and Dwight Shenk of Thurman, OH, and Lois Yvonne Wenger of Port Henry, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Rhoda Wenger of Pinnacle, NC; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Perry Williams of Santa Clara, CA; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Horst of Dayton, VA; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Nelson and Florence Heatwole of Onego; and nieces and nephews. 

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul Wenger; and two sisters, Margaret Genua and Charlotte Halterman.

A funeral service will be conducted today at 10:30 a.m. at Bank Mennonite Church near Dayton, VA, by the ministry of his church.  Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Martha Ruddle

Martha Sue Ruddle, 83, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on Nov. 26, 2008.

She was the daughter of the late Whitney and Janie Pitsenbarger Ruddle.

She graduated from Franklin High School.

Surviving are one son, David Wayne Whyte; one granddaughter, Kylie White; one great-grandson, Brandon David Whyte; three sisters, Mary Armentrout of Franklin, Myrtle Napier of Owings, MD, and Sylvia Neil of Brandywine; one brother, Stanley Lamb of Baltimore, MD; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and an ex-sister-in-law, Arbutis Ruddle Jones of Weyers Cave, VA.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Carroll Ruddle, Edwin Ruddle, Herbert Ruddle and Lester Ruddle.

She was laid to rest in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brent Woods, MD. 

John Schaefer

At Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA, on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, John Schaefer of Brandywine, beloved husband of Anne, much loved husband of Anne, much loved father of michael, Mark, Andrew and Sarah, and dearly loved grandfather, passed away.  He will be greatly missed.

Funeral is private.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Nina B. Mitchell, 84

Nina Bell Mitchell, 84, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Loyalton of Harrisonburg, where she had been a resident for over two years.

She was born in Pendleton County on June 11, 1924, and was a daughter of the late Daniel David and Marcella Hartman Riggleman.

She was united in marriage Oct. 6, 1940, to Andrew Morris Mitchell, who died Aug. 11, 2003.

She worked at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in housekeeping, where she retired in 1999.  She attended Victory Baptist Church in Harrisonburg, VA.

She is survived by one daughter and  her husband, Polly Pittington and husband, Claude of Harrisonburg, VA; one sister, Sarah Earp of Frederick, MD; four grandchildren, Travis Pittington and wife, Dale, Cristal Martin and husband, Kareem, Connie Atkins and husband, Tony, and Angela Humphries and friend, Stan Bennett; and six great-grandchildren, David and Daniel Pittington, Mikael Boyers and wife, Megan, Chantel Baker, Hailey and Kori Atkins.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, Lilly Reedy, Nida See, Coral Alice Riggleman, Minnie Hinkle, Fannie Sears and Esta Mitchell; and three brtohers, Jess, Harvey and William Riggleman.

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Bruce Murray and Pastor Tim Adkins officiating.  Burial followed at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
