Avonelle Anderson, 78

Avonelle Marie (Kelsey) Anderson, 78, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, in Rapid City, SD.

She was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Cherry Grove and was the daughter of the late Charles and Nola Bennett Kelsey.

Mrs. Anderson was the owner of the Kelsey Art Gallery in Hot Springs, SD.  She was a graduate of Circleville High School and attained BA and MA degrees in art, literature and educational psychology from BHSC at Spearfish, SD.  She was a well-known artist, a published author and an instructor of creative writing and art for Mira Costa College, San Diego, CA.

Surviving are her children, Mark Anderson and wife, Hilary, and Alan Anderson and wife, Valarie Stone, all of Golden, CO, August Anderson of Rapid City, SD, and Nola Kelsey of Hot Springs, SD; former husband, Keith Anderson of Black Hawk, SD; former son in-law, Dexter Wittman of Rapid City, SD; sister in-law, Elizabeth Kelsey of Hot Springs, SD; grandchildren, Shauna McClurg, Ian Anderson, Jerry Anderson and Athena Anderson; six brothers, Charles (Ted) Kelsey of Sundance, WY, Richard Kelsey of Creedmoor, NC, Dr. Ronald L. Kelsey of Fredericksburg, VA, Jarel R. Kelsey of King George, VA, Roger B. Kelsey of Latrobe, PA, and Dr. Kenneth L. Kelsey of Las Vegas, NV.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Doris Lee (Kelsey) Kaminski.

A celebration of Mrs. Anderson’s life took place on Nov. 28, 2009, at the Kelsey Art Gallery in Hot Springs, SD.  A memorial service and interment in the North Fork Cemetery will be conducted in May.

Carla Rexrode, 45

Carla Mae (Bird) Strother Rexrode, 45, of Mount Solon, VA, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born in Staunton, VA, on July 7, 1964, and was a daughter of Noah Moats of Moyers, and the late Shelby Jean Elizabeth (Strother) Brock.

Mrs. Rexrode worked as a dietary aide for Avante at Harrisonburg, VA.  She was a member of North River Baptist Church.

She was united in marriage on July 10, 1996, to Timothy Lee Rexrode of Mount Solon, VA, who survives.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and father, are a daughter, Crystal Gail Hodge of Mount Solon, VA; two sons, Steve Lee Burgoyne of Linville, VA, and Dallas Zendell Rexrode of Mount Solon, VA; one sister, Voyene Moats of West Virginia; four brothers, Darrell Keith Brock of Sangerville, VA, Roy Strother of Hinton, VA, Victor Moats of Roanoke, VA, and Vincent Moats of Waynesboro, VA; four grandchildren, Landon Hodge, Dalilah Hodge, Jade Moyer and Xavier Smith; grandmother, Carrie L. Strother of Mount Solon, VA; aunt, Shirley L. Strother of Mount Solon, VA; uncle, Norman Strother of Mount Solon, VA; and step-father, Thomas W. Brock of Harrisonburg, VA.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Deborah Strother.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, VA, with the Rev. Elaine Rose officiating.  Burial followed at Greenwood-Ames Cemetery.
