Arthur Quentin Calhoun, 92, of Upper Tract passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at the Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

After serving in the military, he came home to Pendleton County. His nature was loving people, and he was the happiest when he was pulling pranks or picking on others. He lived his life on the principal that monetary things did not matter, but spending time with friends and family was a treasure. He was a “Mr. Fix-it” and enjoyed tinkering and repairing all sorts of things.

Five years prior to his death, Luke Alt became a part of his life. Alt put a smile on Mr. Calhoun’s face that will never be erased.

Surviving are a sister, Eddie “Kate” Alt of Landes; several nieces and nephews; two special friends and caretakers, Danita “Dee Dee” Alt and Luke Alt.

He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Isaac Scott, Elbridge Ivan, Curtis Ford, Verlie Don, Otha Carl and Ira Olin Calhoun; and four sisters, Lydia Mabel Calhoun, Verna Lee Riggleman, Lillian Miller and Bessie Myrtle Hevener.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, Kline, with Rev. Rita Beeman officiating. Military graveside services were provided by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard at the Kline Cemetery, Kline.

Minnie Alice “Mousey” Moats, 66, of Staunton, VA, and formerly of Franklin went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at her residence.

Mrs. Moats graduated from Franklin High School, sang with the “Voices of Salem Choir” under the direction of the Rev. Samuel Anderson for many years and was a member of Mt. Salem Baptist Church in Staunton, VA.

She was employed by Hanover Shoe Company and Shen-Mar Poultry. She was a “people person” and was loved by everyone.

Surviving are a daughter, Vonyene Moats of Staunton, VA; two sons, Vincent Moats and Victor Moats, both of Staunton, VA; three sisters, Irene Moore and Patty Moats and husband, Otis, all of Staunton, VA, and Dolly Troutman-Johnson and husband, Thomas of Stuarts Draft, VA; three brothers, Arthur Moats and wife, Willa Mae of Norfolk, VA, Walter Moats of Harrisonburg, VA, and Leroy Moats and wife, Teresa of Staunton, VA; two grandchildren, SaVon Robinson and Shaneise Hunter; and two special friends, Linda Anderson and Tina Edwards, both of Staunton, VA.

She was also preceded in death by a step-daughter, Carla Rexrode; two brothers, Wilbur Moats and Virgil Moats; and three sisters, Mabel Moats, Elizabeth Moore and Delia Louise Kennah.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Elder Thomas Johnson, Jr., and Rev. Floyd Miles officiating. Interment followed in Jarrett Moats Cemetery in Moyers.

He was born in Franklin on June 3, 1936, the son of the late Fred Hinkle (June 8, 1978) and Mary Florence Hoover Dice (Jan. 6, 1964 ).

Mr. Dice was a 1954 graduate of Franklin High School, a retired auto mechanic and service station attendant, a member of the Wayside Baptist Church and was a veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are a daughter Bobbi Jo Flores of Front Royal, VA; two sons, Johnny Dice of Falls Church, VA, and Scott Hawkins of Ashville, NC; a sister, Mary Ann Atkins of Hurricane; a brother, Isaac Hinkle “Bud” Dice and wife, Bertha of Franklin; a number of grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday in the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Tim Hall and Pastor Roger Gorby officiating. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin, with military graveside services conducted by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

William Russell “Bill” Smith, 72, of Maysville died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

He was born Sept. 8, 1938, to the late Russell Edgar Smith (March 14, 1982) and the late Mary Jane “Tiny” Roby Smith (July 7, 1999).

Mr. Smith was a Methodist by faith, attended Petersburg High School and was a life long mechanic and carpenter.

Surviving are three sons, William Russell “Rusty” Smith, Jr. And wife, Jody of Somerset, OH, and Kenny Lee Smith and Richard “Ricky” Smith, both of New Lexington, OH; four sisters, Reva Jean Hartman of Franklin, Doris Lee Mongold of Arthur, Rose Marie Andrews of Suffolk, VA, and Donna Katherine McLauren of Woodbridge, VA; three brother, Robert Gerald “Bob” Smith, John Harold Smith and Gary Wayne “Joe” Smith, all of Maysville; thirteen grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00am at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Pastor Forrest Rodgers officiating. Interment will be at the Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Maysville.

Fred A. Keplinger, Sr., 83, of Elkton, MD, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at his home.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1927, in Vandergrift, PA, and was the son of the late James A. And Glona Harman Keplinger.

He was raised in Franklin until he joined the Army where he proudly served during WW II and was honorably discharged.

Mr. Keplinger retired as the owner/operator from M & G Convoy in Neward, DE, after 43 years of devoted service as a car carrier. Driving was one of his greatest passions in life, and he remained accident free throughout his career.

He loved spending time with his family and friends, playing golf and his guitar and will be forever treasured in the hearts and memories of all who knew him.

Surviving are four daughter, Jeannie E. Keplinger, Patricia A. Chambers and husband, Rich, Sharon G. Flohr and husband, Doug, and Dawn M. Poore; two sons, Fred A. Keplinger, Jr. And wife, Kathy, and James A. Keplinger; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Michael E. Keplinger and Dana M. Flohr; and two brothers, James W. And Ralph H. Keplinger.

Funeral services will be held today at 7 pm at the crossroads Bible Church, 144 Appleton Road, Elkton, MD, where family and friends may visit from 5 pm to 7 pm. Interment will be held at 2 pm on Friday at the Kline Cemetery in Franklin.

Rudolph Wellons May, Sr., 75, of Vienna, VA, died Monday, January 3, 2011, in Augusta Health, Fishersville, VA.

He was born April 29, 1935, in Rockingham County, VA, a son of the late Alfred Wellons and Susie Marie (Sellers) May, who passed away Jan. 4, 2011.

Mr. May was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Holsum Bakery with 26 years of service. He was a member of Verona United Methodist Church and the American Legion.

Also surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Rudolph W., Jr., and Vanessa May of Staunton, VA, Jeffrey Lee and Cindy May of Verona, VA and Douglas Elbert and Donna May of Fishersville, VA; a daughter, Patricia May Rehm of Conway, SC; a sister and brother-in-law, Doris M. And Jim Allen of Staunton, VA; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday at Verona United Methodist Church by the Revs. Matthew D. Bates, Jr., and Jim Harris. Burial followed in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Military rites were conducted by the Staunton V. F. W.

The world was blessed with a baby boy on April 16, 1954, in Keyser. He was the son of the late Lindburg D. Kimble and Charlotte Marie Parsons Ford.

Mr. Kimble had over 33 years of service as a bus driver for the Mineral County Board of Education. He had also been involved with the Energy Express program. He was past vice-president of the Mineral County Service Personal Association.

He was a loving friend, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Although he was born in a small town, he never let that stop him from making a big impression on everyone he met. He loved life, knew no strangers and loved making people laugh. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He had a big heart and his family meant the world to him. He always knew just what to say in every situation. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his life-long companion, Esther Kimble, special friend, Bootsie Owens; three sons, Richard Lynn Kimble, and financee Erica Smith of Ridgeley, Darrell Alt, and wife Kary of Keyser, and Stacey Loren Lester of Fort Ashby; a daughter, Nicole Lynn Wagoner, and husband David Troy of Cumberland, MD: five grandchildren, Kaila Flanagan, Hunter Wagoner, Grace-Lynn Wagoner, Audrey Kimble and Kathleen Elizabeth Alt; a step-mother, Cordelia Sue Kimble of Upper Tract; five siblings, Linda Tucker and husband, Don of Sanford, FL, Dave Kimble and wife, Debbie of St. Cloud, FL, Guy Kimble and wife, Karen of Keyser, Pat Kimble and wife, Mary of Keyser and Joy Kimble, Austin, TX; and several nieces and nephews. He was the guardian of Danny Helmick.

A service to celebrate his life was held Thursday at the Fort Ashby Intermediate School with Pastor Phillip Dayton and Rev. Richard Maloney officiating.

John Lawrence Smith, 69, of Hurricane, a self-proclaimed “traveling United Methodist preacher, an observer of God’s creation and a recorder of Mountain heritage” died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness.

Mr. Smith was an alumnus of both Nitro High (‘58) and West Virginia University (‘62). He received a Masters of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in 1965.

In 1966, he was ordained a pastor in the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. His service to the Lord took him over most of the state, starting in the Potomac Highlands of Pendleton, Hardy and Grant counties where he served eight churches, and concluded in 2001 with Montgomery and Boomer United Methodist churches in Fayette County.

He was also the author of many books on the natural history of West Virginia including “The Potomac Naturalist,” “Blackwater County,” “The High Allegheny” and “The Birds of Pendleton County.” He had many other articles on the state’s history appear in “Wild, Wonderful West Virginia.”

Also surviving are two children, Jay Lawrence Smith and Julianna (Danny)Smith Bowyer, both of Hurricane; two grandchildren, Jasmine Bowyer and Danny Bowyer, III’ two sisters, Helen Harman of Luray, VA, and Rebecca (Robert) Jordan, of Dallas, TX; a brother, Richard (Robin) Stanley Smith of St. Albans; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held Jan. 8 at the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, Hurricane. A reception to celebrate what would have been his 70th birthday followed.

The Wymer family moved to Washington, DC, in 1941. She was a 1951 graduate of Central High School. She was a private secretary at Muncy Trust Company. She was a Presbyterian by faith and was active in volunteer work.

Also surviving are a daughter, Bonnie F. Mitchell; two sons, Donald P. Flemion and Brian R. Flemion; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 13, 2010, at Harry H. Witzke’s Funeral Home, Ellicott City, MD. Interment was in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Ellicott City, MD.
