Winford “Windy” Kofsky

Winford John “Windy” Kofsky, Jr., age 77, of Seneca Rocks, WV, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

He was born in Baltimore, MD on January 14, 1934, the son of the late Winford John and Minnie Nemcek Kofsky.

Mr. Kofsky graduated from Sparrows Point High School, was a member of the VFW Post #6694 in Dundalk, MD. He retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1994 as a Welder. John was a Veteran of the US Navy and was Catholic.

Surviving are a companion, Sandra Waggy of Seneca Rocks; two daughters, Laura Conrad and husband Scott of Baltimore, MD, Linda Surdel and husband Richard of Baltimore, MD; two sons, Joseph Kofsky of Milton, VT, John Kofsky and wife Kimberlee of Baltimore, MD; a sister, Delores Vice of Lima, OH; five grandchildren, Nicole Conrad, Kevin Conrad, Zachary Kofsky, John Kofsky, and Richard Surdel.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday a the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin with Pastor Becky Bennett officiating. Interment will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, WV with military graveside services provided by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

Alston Hansel Thompson

Mr. Alston Hansel Thompson, 87, of Franklin, West Virginia died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at his home.

He was born January 27,1924 at Ruddle, West Virginia and was the son of the late Samuel Roscoe Thompson and Bessie Alice Hinkle Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was a timberman, a heavy equipment operator, a farmer and he operated his own sawmill.

On October 21, 1946, he married Teretha V. Warner Thompson, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Mary Radcliffe of Dayton, VA; two sons, Gary A. Thompson of Fredericksburg, VA, Harry L. Vandevander of McGaheysville, VA; two half-brothers, Jerry W. Thompson of Hinton, VA, Donald Thompson of Broadway, VA; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; and two step-great-greatgranddaughters, He was also preceded in death by one brother, Sherman Thompson and three sisters, Lilly Smith, Ivanelle Moyers and Polly Mallow.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, West Virginia with Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin.

Edward H. Harper, 89

Edward H. Harper, 89, of Pottstown, formerly of Royersford, PA, passed away Monday at Frederick Living.

Born in Job, West Virginia, he was the son of the late John and Eva (Bennett) Harper.

Mr. Harper was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Trappe, PA. He was an avid bowler with the Church’s men’s bowling league for ten years. Edward served in the United States Army, in Italy during WWII and was the recipient of two purple hearts. After the service, he worked for B.F. Goodrich for forty-two years.

Most of all, Ed loved to spend time with his three grandchildren.

His wife, Daisey E. (Works) Harper, preceded him in death.

Surviving is a daughter Joanne Reilly, wife of Kevin of Pottstown, PA; grandchildren, Daniel Reilly, husband Laura of King of Prussia, PA, Kristen and Kelly Reilly of Pottstown, PA; great granddaughter Jennifer Harper Reilly of King of Prussia, PA; sister Billie Gail Harper of Seneca Rocks; and sister-in-laws Ruth Harper and Ethel Harper.

He was also preceded in death by brothers Michael, Earl, Worth and John Harper, and sisters Gladys Lambert and Ruby Hedrick.

A funeral service was held Saturday at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Trappe, PA 19426, with Rev. Ann Tweedie Few officiating. Entombment followed at Limerick Garden of Memories.

Louise Vandevander, 85

Louise Propst Vandevander, 85, of Brandywine, died Tuesday morning, January 10, 2012 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin, West Virginia.

She was born September 17, 1926 at Brandywine, and was the daughter of the late Dan Propst and Iva Propst Propst.

Mrs. Vandevander had worked at Virginia State Snack Bar, Cameron Station, Alexandria, Virginia.

Her husband, Isaac Raymond Vandevander, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Margaret Anne Rexrode of Weyers Cave, VA; one brother, Roy Propst and wife, Marie of Clearville, PA; two sisters, Polly Thomason and husband, Dick of Hilton Head, SC, Wanda Eye Hedrick and husband, Everett of Marlinton; two grandchildren, Timothy John Rexrode and wife, Mary of Conifer, CO, Nicole Anne Showalter and husband, Chris of Weyers Cave, VA; Four great-grandchildren, Taylor Leigh Rexrode of Conifer, CO, Jesse Lee, James Ryan and Haley Dawn Showalter all of Weyers Cave, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son Dennis Propst, sister Norma Propst Walker and two brothers Hurl Propst and Elvin Propst.

Her body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held in Brandywine in the Spring.

Melvin Everett Moats

Melvin Everett Moats, age 83, of Sugar Grove, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

He was born at Sugar Grove on April 4, 1928, the son of the late Albert and Clariece Beverly Moats.

Mr. Moats attended Moatstown School, graduated Upshur County High School, and was a member of the Moats Chapel AME. He was a carpenter, a construction Worker, and he was a veteran of the US Army.

His wife, Myrtle Catherine Redman, whom he married Oct. 20, 1950, survives in Sugar Grove.

Also surviving are two daughters, Fay Redman Moats and husband Charles of Franklin, Alma Moats Grandison and husband Norman of Wardensville; a son, Melvin Moats, Jr. and companion Carla of Bridgewater, VA; four sisters, Thelma Moats of Moyers, Elsie Barrow and husband Sam of Franklin, Grace Moats of Moyers, Cora Grandison of Strasburg, VA; two brothers, Earl Moats and wife Gloria, Harman Moats, Jr. of Moyers; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Anderson; two brothers, Lawrence Moats, Gene Moats; and a sister, Beverly Gardiner.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Eldon Moats officiating. Interment will be at Moats Family Cemetery, Moyers with military graveside services provided by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Jerry L. Nelson, 71

Jerry L. Nelson, of Glen Burnie, passed away suddenly on January 5, 2012 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Born July 26, 1940, in Riverton, he was the son of Virgie Judy Nelson of Franklin and the late Rev. Harding Nelson.

Mr. Nelson had lived in Maryland since 1959. He worked for Coca Cola in Capital heights, MD, from 1959- 2001. He was a member of Woodberry Church of the Brethren in Baltimore, MD, for many years In his spare time, he enjoyed watching sports and he was a fan of the COPS television show. He kept up with current events by watching TV news, and reading the newspaper.

His wife, Patricia A. Mongold Nelson survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Paul O. Nelson of Frederick, MD and Michael L. Nelson of Greenbelt, MD; a daughter, Donna J. Ward of Pasadena, MD; a brother, Phillip H. Nelson of Charlottesville, VA; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday at the Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral home at Glen Burnie, MD. Interment followed in Glen Haven Memorial Park.
