Harvey C. Whetzel
Harvey C. Whetzel, 80, of Franklin, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at his home.

He was born June 30, 1925 at Dumpling Run, Hardy County and was a son of the late Silas Whetzel and dora Alice Mongold Whetzel. 

He was employed by the Grant County Department of Highways and retired fro Hanover Shoe Company after 17 years of employment.  He was a member of the Friends Run Church of the Brethren and was an honorary member of the Franklin volunteer Fire Department. 

His wife, Ersley Ratliff Whetzel, preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 2005.  They were married Sept. 30, 1946. 

Survivors include a daughter, Janet E. Thompson and Bert Beck; and a son, Austen C. Whetzel and wife, Dianne, all of Franklin; a sister, Faye Ratliff of Timberville, VA; a brother, Acie Whetzel of Broadway, VA; six grandchildren, Kevin Thompson, Sr., Michele Westfall, Becky Paugh and husband, Terry, Jeremy Thompson, Trent Whetzel and wife, Jenny, and Jared Whetzel and wife Tesia; five great-grandchildren, Christopher Thompson, Kevin Thompson, Jr., Tyler Shears, Haley Madison Elizabeth Paugh and Patrick Westfall; and one step-great-grandson, Cody Paugh. 

He also was preceded in death by 10 sisters and two brothers. 

Pastor Dan Ludwick conducted the funeral Saturday at the Kimble Funeral Home in  Franklin.  Burial was at cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract.

Walter Simmons, 89

Walter Stern Simmons, 89, of Amarillo, TX, died Jan. 7, 2006, at the cottages at Quail Creek, Amarillo, TX. 

Born Dec. 30, 1916, in Reeds Creek, he was the youngest son of the late Josephus and Stella E. Smith Simmons. 

Mr. Simmons was a veteran of U.S. Army, having served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.  In 1955, he moved to Missouri, where he continued farming at Pisgah and Fortuna and later worked for Dunkin Sign Company in Versailles, MO. He enjoyed caring for this cattle and hunting.  He was a member of the Reeds Creek United Methodist church. 

On April 18, 1944, he married Twila Gene Drake at Fortuna, MO, who preceded him in death on May 7, 1983. 

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Wise and husband, Jon of Hughesville, MO, and Brenda Burns and husband, Terry of Amarillo, TX; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. 

He also was preceded in death by one sister, four brothers and a son, Alan Dean. 

Graveside services were held Tuesday at Syracuse Cemetery, Syracuse, MO, with Rev. W.D. Martensen officiating. 

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Holley Funeral Home, Inc., Canyon, TX  79015. 

Roy Donald Simmons

On Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at 9:27 p.m., Roy Donald Simmons (Summers) of Eastpoint, Baltimore, MD, was greeted by Jesus and family members to his eternal home. 

Mr. Simmons was born in Franklin on April 2, 1940.  He was the son of the late Mary Louise Simmons Shifflett and the grandson of the late Isaac Conrad Simmons. 

His brother, Roger Dale Simmons (Podelco) preceded him in death. 

He is survived by a sister, Mary Ruth Simmons Boyer of Franklin. 

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.  Burial was at Parkview Cemetery in Overlea Baltimore, MD. 

Jackie L. Weaver, 51

Jackie Lynn Weaver, 51,  Philippi, passed away Jan. 2, 2006, in the Sago mine disaster in Tallmansville.

Mr. Weaver was born Jan. 5, 1954, in Philippi, a son of the late Oliver Perry and Evelyn Dorothy Sinsel Weaver. 

Mr. Weaver was an experienced coal miner and was employed by Sago Coal Mines as a maintenace man. Mr. Weaver was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors and was a member of the Corley United Methodist Church.

He was united in marriage Sept. 5, 1992, to Charlotte Poe Weaver, who survives at Mt. Liberty Road in Philippi.

Also surviving is one daughter, Rebecca Sue Weaver Wolfe of Philippi; one son, Justin Tyler Weaver, at home; one sister, Linda Lou Kimble of Franklin; two step-sisters, Beverly Ann Pyles of Grafton and Hilda Jean Jones of Ohio; three brothers, Perry W. Weaver Jr., Mark Allen Weaver and Jeffrey Neal Weaver, all of Philippi; two step-brothers, Ron Skidmore of Moatsville and Don Weaver of Monongah; two grandchildren, Gavin Isaac Wolfe and Dylan Christopher Wolfe; a special nephew, George E. McCauley Jr., and several other nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by many coal mine brothers.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Jackie Lynn Weaver Jr., and a half-brother, Eddie Skidmore.

Services were held Sunday at the Wright Funeral Home, Philippi, with the Rev. Destry Daniels and the Rev. Arden Beck officiating.  Interment followed in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery.
