Milton Long

Mr. Long was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Roaring Creek, near Onego, and was a son of the late Sheridan Long and Mary Jane Vance Long.

He was a farmer, logger and timber cutter. He was a medic in the Army during World War II and was a member of Seneca Rocks Presbyterian Church.

His wife, Nellie Fern Vance Long, preceded him in death Feb. 26, 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Long Ruddle and husband, Morris of Onego; two brothers, John Long of Seneca Rocks, and Kermit Long of Trout Run, PA; and two granddaughters, Polly and Teresa.

The Rev. Bill Cox will conduct the funeral Tuesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Harper Cemetery with military honors by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be made to Seneca Rocks Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall or Gideons International. 

Thelma Roberta (Sites) Goldizen, 81, of Cabins, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

She was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Maysville and was the daughter of the late Luther and Maude (Burgess) Sites. 

She was a member of Corner United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Her husband of 63 years, Arthur A. Goldizen, survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Linda Glascock of Bealeton, VA, Nancy Hansbrough of Harrisonburg, VA, and Sharon Porter of Petersburg, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Essie Maude (Sites) VAnMeter, and two brothers, James Paul Sites and Eston Lloyd Sites. 

Funeral services were held Saturday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Revs. Stanley Kile and Joseph Gerstell officiating.  Burial will be in the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Corner United Methodist Church, Grant County Nursing Home or a charity of choice.

Hope M. Day

Hope May Bland Day, 76, of Seneca Rocks died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Day was born Dec. 19, 1930, in Brushy Run, Onego and was the daughter of the late Titus Bland and Margie Mallow Bland.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Roy Jacob Day, preceded her in death Dec. 24, 1999.

Survivors include a son, John Day of Petersburg; three brothers, Foster Bland and Gar Bland, both of Onego, and Glen Bland of Phoenix, AZ; two grandchildren, Scott and Jamie Day; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Cole Day and Peyton Harrison.

The Rev. Roger Harrison will conduct the funeral at 1 p.m. Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancers Society or Seneca Rocks Volunteer Fire Department. 

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Linda Gail Charlton

Linda Gail Charlton, 60, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Jan. 2, 2007, at 8:35 p.m. at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since Dec. 6.

Ms. Charlton was born Jan. 17, 1946, in Akron, OH, but spent most of her life in Rockingham County, VA. She was a daughter of the late Charles Charlton and Alpha Charlton who survives.

She attended Broadway High School in the late sixties o early seventies and later got her GED.  She was a well-known seamstress who worked for Metro Pants Factory for many years and she also enjoyed making arts and crafts.

She is survived by two sons, Kelly Kite and wife, Debra, and Rick Messerley and fiancee, Shawna Grimm; a granddaughter, Autumn Messerley; three sisters, Neva Knight of McGaheysville, VA, Becky Whitmer of Broadway, VA, and Charlene Charlton of New Orleans, LA; five brothers, Charles H. Charlton Jr. of Martinsburg, William Charlton of Seneca Rocks, Alden Charlton of Broadway, VA, Mike Charlton of Charlotte, NC, and Gary Charlton of Harrisonburg, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Susie Deavers and Phyllis Hinton, and two brothers, David Charlton and Wayne Charlton. 

Pastors Elam Heatwole and Jay Rohrer conducted a memorial service Saturday at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA.

By the request of Ms. Charlton, her body was cremated.

Beverly S. Orr, 68

Beverly S. Orr, 68, of Orlando FL, passed away Dec. 18, 2006. 

Born March 21, 1938 in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Bernice Stites Byrd. 

She married in Charleston in July, 1962, then traveled the world with her Air Force husband until he retired in 1985 and their family settled in Orlando, FL.  She was a secretary for the Florida Department of Banking and Finance until retiring in 1998. 

Survivors include her husband, MSGT L.E. "Leo" Orr; three sons, Jeffrey Carl Orr and wife, Elaine, Dean Clark Orr and wife, Colleen, and Darrin Troy Orr and wife, Ruth; one brothers, Dr. John W. Byrd and wife, Rachel; four grandchildren, Vance, Melanie, Ricky and Bradley; and two nephews, John Byrd and wife, Mandy, and Christopher Byrd and wife, Monica. 

Beautiful Eastern Star and Presbyterian Funeral services were held on Dec. 21 and 22, respectively, at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Orlando, FL.  Dr. Robert Eckard officiated on Dec. 22.  

Dove Funeral Home, Orlando, FL, was in charge of funeral arrangements.  

Goldie M. Harper

Goldie Mae Simmons Harper, 70, of Staunton, VA, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Harper was born June 19, 1936, in Franklin and was a daughter of the late Sebealdus Simmons and Lillian Rexrode Simmons Brooks.

She was a homemaker and cared for her grandchildren and the children of many of her friends. She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Gordon L. Harper, whom she married Dec. 7, 1956, survives.  

Also surviving are two sons, Warren Harper of Verona, VA, and Daryl Harper of Staunton, VA; a daughter, Rebecca Wagner of Verona, VA; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Franklin Brooks

The Rev. Robert R. Von Oeyen Jr. conducted the funeral Tuesday at the Henry Funeral Home in Staunton, VA. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.

Annebelle Cooper Cubbage went to be with the Lord at 3:25 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at her home.

Born in Onego on Aug. 2, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Ernie B. Cooper, Sr. and Daisy Belle Painter Cooper. 

She attended schools in West Virginia, and after the family moved to Harrisonburg, VA, graduated from Mt. Clinton High School in 1952. 

On Feb. 1, 1958, she married Lester Cubbage, who survives.

They lived several years in Wheaton / Silver Spring, MD, where she helped her husband start his construction business. When the children were older, they moved back to Harrisonburg, VA, where she did the company books, prepared houses for new owners and stayed home to raise their four children. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by their children, Jefferey Cubbage and wife, Loretta of  Bridgewater, VAm Robin Lindsay and husband, Jeff of Harrisonburg, VA, Tammy Warren and husband, Robert of Fishersville, VA, and Sharon Manss and husband Tim, of Wake Forest, NC; a sister, Olive Armentrout of Harrisonburg, VA; four brothers, Gene Cooper of Harrisonburg, VA, Jerry and Benny Cooper of Woodstock, VA, and Harry Cooper of Edinburg, VA; 10 grandchildren: Hilary Perry (Evan) and Caroline Cubbage, Kate, Jonathan and Megan Lindsay, Brad Warren, Ashley and Robbie Hinkle, and Samantha and Patrick Manss; and one great-grandson, Benjamin Christian Perry.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernie B. Cooper Jr. and Jack D. Cooper; and one sister, Patsy Cooper.

Funeral services were held at DaySpring Church of the Nazarene, Mount Crawford. Burial followed at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Harrisonburg, VA.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Kyger Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, VA.

Bonnie Harrison, 88

Bonnie Harrison, 88, of Mulberry, FL, died Dec. 27, 2006, in Lakeland, FL.

Born Aug 14, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Kenny and Ollie Rexrode. 

Mrs. Harrison was a native of Pendleton County and formerly of White Sulphur Springs. 

She was employed by Kroger for 20 years.  She moved to Plano, TX, in 1981 before residing in Mulberry, FL, for the previous 10 years.  She was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, FL.

Her first husband, "Jack" Harrison, passed away in 1979. 

Her second husband of 25 years, Warren Sharp, survives. 

Also surviving are two sons, Jim Harrison of Houston, TX, and Jerry Harrison of Augusta, GA; a step-son, Paul Sharp of White Sulphur Sprngs; a sister, Leta Rader of Franklin; a grandson, Matthew Harrison of Allen, TX; two granddaughters, Jennifer Tufford of Plano, TX, and Jan Furlow of Alexandria, VA; and eight great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a grandson, David Michael Harrison; two brothers, Junior and Roy; and a sister, Glenna. 

Funeral services were held Dec. 31, 2006, at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel at Clintonville, FL, with the Rev. Calvin Rice officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Salvation Army.
