Esta Rae Mitchell

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Klineon July 9, 1920, and was a daughter of the late Daniel David Riggleman and Effie Lena Hartman.

She retired in 1975 from James Madison University, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Harrisonburg, VA.

She was united in marriage May 13, 1939, to Cletus Richard Mitchell, who preceded her in death on January 1, 2005.

Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Smith of McGaheysville, VA, Frances Michael of Goods Mill, VA, and Constance West of Boomer, NC. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service was conducted Dec. 28, 2008, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes, VA, with Bishop Newell Wright officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, VA.

Delton L. Bennett

Delton L. Bennett, 65, of Laporte, MN, died Dec. 17, 2008, at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, ND, following five weeks of being hospitalized. 

He was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Onego to Virgil and Nellie Bennett. 

Mr. Bennett lived in Riverton until moving to Alaska with his wife in 1984.  In 2002, they moved to Minnesota and made their home near Laporte, MN.  

His life partner, Eileen, survives. 

Also surviving are three sisters; Sharon Bogan and Brenda Mick, both of Riverton, and Becky George of Upper Tract; three brothers, Robert Bennett of Circleville, Jean Bennett of Riverton and Wayne Mick and their respected families; and two nephews Gregory Bennett of Virginia and Kevin Thompson of Circleville, who were always there for him. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Riverton. 

Arrangements are being handled by Dennis Funeral Home of Walker, MN. 

William Hubert (Isaac) Mick

William Hubert (Isaac) Mick, 83, of Cherry Grove died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.  

He was born Sept. 2, 1925, at Cherry Grove and was the son of the late Johnny K. and Arlena Lambert Mick. 

He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, having served in Germany during World War II.  He was a carpenter in Woodbridge, VA, and a kiln operator at the Greer Lime Plant in Riverton for 23 years. 

On July 6, 1970, he married Mary Ethel Hedrick Mick, who survives. 

Also surviving are his granddaughter, April Buitendyke Hoover of Brandywine; a great-grandson, Jason Michael Buitendyke of Cherry Grove, both of whom he raised; one step-son, Eric Wheeler and wife, Penny of Cherry Grove and their three children, Cassie, Adam and Leslie; one step-daughter, Ruth Malcom of Cherry Grove and her children, Jolene, Jimmy, Kelly, Samantha, Dominique, Derek, Amber and Loriann; one great-grandson, William Malcom of Cherry Grove; three sisters Lillian Johnson of Pendleton Manor in Franklin, Hope Estes of Culpeper, VA, and Olive Simmons of Cass; one brother, John Mick of Fort McCoy, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

He ws also preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Mick; one sister, Bonnie Mick Wymer; one half brother, Dona Nelson; one step-son, Joseph Hedrick; and one step-grandson, Jerry Malcom.  

Graveside services were held Dec. 31, 2008, at North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton with Rev. Dr. Paul O'Gorek officiating. Military graveside services were conducted by members of the Pendleton County Honor Guard.  

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. 

Earl Junior Dove, 61, of Broadway, VA, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at his home with his family. .

He was born on Aug. 19, 1947, and was a son of the late Ora Lee Dove and Denna Arlene Dove.

He retired from Valley Proteins in Linville, VA . after 30 years due to illness. He was born and raised as a member of the Fairview Church, New Market, VA.

His loving wife, Janie Marie Price Dove, survives. 

Also surviving are one daughter, Tammy Annette Dove Hammer of Franklin; two sons, Donald Martin Dove of Timberville, VA, and Michael Jay Dove of Bridgewater, VA; step-daughter, Shelly McNee of Shenandoah, VA; step-son, Barry Reedy of Fulks Run, VA; Ffour grandchildren, Justin Michael Dove and Matthew Joseph Dove, both of Franklin, Arron Martin Dove and Amber Dawn Dove, both of Timberville, VA; step-granddaughter, Megan M. McNee of Shenandoah, VA; two sisters, Mazie Stump of Moorefield and Eunice Mullenax of Broadway, VA; three brothers, Delmas Dove of Bergton, VA, Willard “Bud” Dove of Fulks Run, VA, and Roger Dove of New Market, VA. 

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Tanya Arlene Dove.

The Revs. Jerry Shifflett and Lewis Armentrout Jr., conducted the funeral Sunday at the Fairview Church.  Burial followed in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in New Market, VA.

Ruth Belle Warner

Ruth Belle Warner, 93, of Riverton died Dec. 21, 2008, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. 

Born June 29, 1915, at Cherry Grove, she was a daughter of the late William and Annie Elizabeth Waybright Mullenax. 

She was a homemaker and loved to quilt.  She was a member of the Circleville PResbyterian Church. 

Her husband, Richard M. Warner, preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1986. 

Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn Simmons of Frankln, Debra Simmons of Riverton and Diana Auville of Onego; six sons, Billy Warner, Roger Warner, Jimmy Warner and Laird Richard Warner, all of Circleville, Kenneth Warner of Franklin, and Hal Warner of Blue Grass, VA; one sister, Irene Raines, a resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg; 19 grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.  

She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Jimmy DeWayne Warner; one daughter, Elaine Simmons; three brothers; and six sisters. 

Funeral services were held Dec. 24, 2008, at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Bill Cox officiating.  Burial was in the Warner Family Cemetery, Upper North Fork. 

Faye L. Downey, 63

Faye Lambert Downey, 63, of Craigsville, VA, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 28, 2008, at Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center of Fishersville, VA. 

She was born on April 25, 1945, in Pendleton County, the daughter of the late Oscar and Ethel Moyers Lambert.  

In November of 1986, she married Daford M. Downey, who survives. 

Mrs. Downey was a 1965 graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin.  She retired as a line worker at Perdue Poultry, Inc., in Bridgewater, VA.  She was a member of Peoples Baptist Church in Craigsville, VA.  She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.  

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sisters, June Ord of Franklin adn Betty Mongold of Bridgewater, VA; six brothers, William Otha Lambert and Charles Lambert, both of Waynesboro, VA, Warnie Lambert of Dayton, VA, Ona "Chuck" Lambert of Mount Sidney, VA, Jack Lambert of Franklin and Roger Stuckey of Archbold, Ohio; a special niece, Tammy Judy of Stuarts Draft, VA; and a number of other nieces and nephews.  

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Velma C. "Dit" Lambert.  

A funeral service was conducted Dec. 31, 2008, at Peoples Baptist Church in Craigsville, VA, with Pastor Claude Williams and the REv. Dee FLory officiating.  Interment followed in Community Memorial Cemetery, Craigsville, VA.

Charles Pitsenbarger, 3

Charles Ray (Bubby) Pitsenbarger, 3, went home with the angels on Dec. 26, 2008.  He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home. 

He was born on Dec. 22, 2005, at Harrisonburg, VA, and was the son of Charles Allen and Amy Lynn Crawford Pitsenbarger of Broadway, VA.  

Surviving in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Dezarai Lynn Crawford and Katelynn Dawn Pitsenbarger, both at home; grandparents, Ricky Elwood Crawford of Broadway, VA, Catherine and Edwin Lantz of Elkton, VA, Sheila Rexrode of Fulks Run, VA, Raymond Gray of Vermillion, OH, and Earl Curry of Singers Glen, VA; and great-grandparents, Tiny and Cindy Crawford of Fulks Run, VA, Ralph and Arvella Pitsenbarger of Franklin, Goldie Taylor of Mount Crawford, VA, Marving Mutherspaw of Dayton, VA, and Alice and Bob Lilly of South Carolina. 

The Rev. Ike Risser and Roy Good conducted a funeral service Dec. 28 at the Gospel Hill Mennonite Church.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Hazel C. Taylor, 79

Hazel Catherine Bennett Taylor, 79, a resident of Mill Creek and more recently of Beverly, departed this life early Wednesday morning, Dec. 31, 2008, at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.  She had been in declining health for the past two years and had suffered a stroke four months ago. 

She was born Tuesday, April 16, 1929, at Cherry Grove, a daughter of the late Clemmie E. Bennett and Nora Kate Lambert Bennett. 

She attended the schools of Pendleton County, was a member of the Church of the Brethren, loved gospel music, word search puzzles, Bible studies and reading the Pendleton Times.

She was twice married.  Her first husband, Robert J. Lambert, and her second husband, Stanley B. Taylor, both preceded her in death. 

Surviving are four sons, Larry Lambert and wife, Zorina of Fayetteville, NC, Stanley Taylor of Martinsburg, William McCAuley Gilbert and wife, Lori of Chardon, OH, and Robert Leonard, Belington; three daughters, Ruth E. O'Brien andhusband, DAve of Genevia, OH, Nancy Draa and husband, Paul of Warren, OH, and NOra Lambert and husband, Bobby of Mill Creek; two brothers, Elmer Bennett adn wife, Grethel of Franklin, and Andrew Bennett and wife Lucy of PEtersburg; three sisters, Cathline Dean of Manassas, VA, Luna Haggy of Franklin and Lillian Thompson of Bartow; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. 

She was also preceded in death by one infant son, Jacob Bennett. 

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Valley Independent Baptist Church, Huttonsville, with Pastor Frank Stanley officiating.  Interment followed at the Birck Church Cemetery at Huttonsville.  

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home, Elkins.

Ann Riley Derby

Ann Riley Derby, 88, of Franklin died peacefully at Pendleton Manor, Franklin, on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008. 

Born Feb. 18, 1920, in Little Rock, AR, she was the daughter of the late John Alexander Riley and Ann Salter Mills Riley.

Mrs. Derby received her associate degree in business and music from San Jose State College, where she met her husband, Sherwin Lyle Derby.  Married on Oct. 7, 1941, the were wed nearly 65 years before he died.

Mrs. Derby was a gifted piano player who could both read music and play by ear.  While living in O'Fallon, IL, she accompanied school dance and choral groups and church choirs of all ages.  For five years, she served as periodicals clerk for O'Fallon High School Library.

After dividing their time between Illinois and Pendleton County for several years, the Derbys moved to Franklin.  She took readily to small town life joining women's circle groups at Franklin Presbyterian Church and Main Street Methodist Church.  She was also active in Franklin Home Demonstration Club, Potomac Valley Garden Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. 

She enjoyed interior decorating, knitting, growing houseplants and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Derby will be remembered as a gracious, friendly woman who had a smile for everyone.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Nan and Paul Goland of Franklin; two sons, John Derby of O'Fallon, IL, and Mark Derby of Dallas, TX; two granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.

Everett Waldschlager

Everett Eugene "Gene" Waldschlager, 80, of Franklin died Dec. 29, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Waldschlager was born Nov. 23, 1928, in Dixon, IL, and was a son of the late John Waldschlager and Violet Engle Waldschlager.

He retired as a supervisor from Hanover Shoe Co. with 25 years of service.  He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a Baptist.

His wife, Joyce Trantham Waldschlager, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Terry Engle and husband, Clarence Richard of Minnetonka, MN, and Cindy Evick and husband, Billy Evick of Franklin; three sons, John Waldschlager and wife, Diana of Columbia, MO, Mark Dehlin and wife, Crystal of Morgantown, and Glenn Waldschlager and wife, Cheryl of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, Donnie Waldschlager of Ohio and bill Waldschlager of Florida; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Ronnie.

Pastor Glenn Waldschlager conducted the funeral Friday at the chapel of Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. burial was in Pine Crest Cemetery in Franklin with a military graveside service by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Carter Lee "Pete" Ruddle

Carter lee "Pete" Ruddle, 77, of Franklin and formerly of South Charleston, died Jan. 1, 2009, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

He was born Feb. 25, 1931, at South Charleston and was the son of the late Isaac Carter Ruddle and Evelyn Marie Griffth Ruddle. 

Mr. Ruddle was a carpenter by trade and a retired maintenance supervisor at Union Carbide Tech Center.  He was a Veteran  of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean War aboard the USS Albuquerque and the USS Alvin C. Cockrell, and was a retired Seabee from the U.S. Naval Reserves.  He was a member of Dunbar Masonic Lodge #159 and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9666. 

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Margery Coen Ruddle.   

Also surviving are six sons, Roy (Karen) Ruddle, Robert M. (Chris) Ruddle, Richard Ruddle and Peter R. (Missy) Ruddle, all of South Charleston, Philip L. (Maxie) Ruddle of Charleston, Charles M. (Sheila) Ruddle of Franklin; five daughters, Ann (Carl) Wright, of Fredericksburg, VA, Mary Evelyn (Tony) Taylor of Chesapeake, VA, Tracy (Ken) Webb of Charleston, Betty Jean (Charles) Underwood of Fredericksburg, VA, and Beverly Ruddle of Winston-Salem, NC; 20 grandchildren, Eleanor Ruddle, Brittany, Blair and Bailey Ruddle, SAmantha Ruddle, Thomas and Janet Ruddle, Jason, Kristopher and Cameron Wright, Scott, Emilee, Zachary and Benjamin Taylor, Margery and Becca Webb, Jacob and Jenny Ruddle and Brice and Hannah Underwood; and one brother, John David (Pat) Ruddle of Yorktown, VA. 

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert E. Ruddle.  

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Kevin Hand officiating.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with Masonic graveside services conducted by members of Pendleton Lodge #144 A.F.& A.M.

Mildred Hope Nelson

Mildred Hope Nelson, 86, of Laurel, MD, died Jan. 2, 2009, at Fairfax Nursing Center, Fairfax, VA.

Born March 9, 1922, at Macksville, she was a daughter of the late Glenn and Myrtle Raines Hedrick.

She was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodists Church.

Her husband, Roland Nelson, preceded her in death in 1990.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda Sue Rubens and husband, Gary of Annandale, VA, Brenda Faye Clark and husband, Roy of Leesburg, VA, and Deborah Jean MacPherson and husband, Andrew of Crofton, MD; one sister, Gae Mullenax of Cherry Grove, one brother, Blake Hedrick of Seneca Rocks; sister-in-law, Sadie Belle Propst of Circleville; and two grandchildren, Allison and Catherine MacPherson. 

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Darrell, Virgil and Sheldon; and one sister, Thelma Lambert.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the High Rock United Methodist Church with Pastor Barbara Rexroad officiating.  Burial was in North Fork Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the High Rock United Methodist Church.

William Harlan Kile

WIlliam Harlan Kile, 91, of Upper Tract departed this life Dec. 31, 2008, in Franklin, as the result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Kile was born Feb. 7, 1917, in Pendleton County and was the eldest child of the late Eston McKinley and Lucinda Edith (Kimble) Kile.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1936.  In his younger years, he worked for Glen L. Martin Aircraft Corporation, Baltimore, MD.  Upon his return to Pendleton county, he owned and operated Kile's Texaco Service Station near Upper Tract.  In 1961, he and his wife were awarded the Champion Farmer Award for Pendleton County by the Farming for Better Living Council.

Mr. Kile serviced his community in many positions: Justice of Peace, secretary of Cherry Hill Cemetery Association, member of Pendleton County Public Service District, charter and honorary member of south Branch Ruritan Club and charter member of South Branch Fire Department. 

He was united in marriage Nov. 16, 1940, to Pauline Virginia Lambert, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Christine Kile of Upper Tract; a son, William Kile and daughter-in-law, Beverly of Petersburg; five grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Kesner of Dayton, VA, Mildred Kimble of upper Tract and Shirley Kile of Petersburg; two brothers, Bunis Kile of Upper Tract and Reginald Kile of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jacob Herold Kile and Keith McKinley Kile and two sisters, Maxine Mowery and Kathleen Simmons.

The Reverend Stanley Kile and Pastor Sam Harper conducted a funeral service Saturday at Christ Central Church near Upper Tract.  Interment was in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract.

Christopher Allen Sponaugle, Infant

Christopher Allen Sponaugle was stillborn at his residence at Circleville on Dec. 24, 2008.

He was the son of Rick Allen and Jennifer Sue Turner Sponaugle.

Survivng in addition to his parents, are one sister, Rebecca Sponaugle of Montgonery, AL; five brothers, Austin Sponaugle, Roland Tingler, Dustin Sponaugle and Adam Sponaugle, all of Cherry Grove, and Aron Vint of Circleville; and grandparents, Elaine Turner and Edith "Peachy" Thompson, both of Cherry Grove.

A graveside service was held Dec. 26, 2008, at Cherry Grove Cemetery, Cherry Grove, with Harold Mullenax officiating. 

Arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.
