Marie E. Vandevander 

Marie Elizabeth Vandevander, 88, of Franklin died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mrs. Vandevander was born Nov. 1, 1916, in Smith Creek and was the daughter of the late Alonzo Lambert and Effie Rexrode Lambert. 

She was a homemaker and was employed at the Franklin Garment Factory.  She was a member of Smith Creek Church of the Brethren. 

On April 8, 1939, she married Roy Walter Vandevander, who survives.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

she also was preceded in death by four half brothers, Richard, Harry and Horace Lambert and Lloyd Rexrode, and two sisters, Jessie Arbogast and Nellie Lambert. 

Pastor Dan Ludwick conducted the funeral Dec. 28 at Smith Creek church of the Brethren.  Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin, by Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  

James Puffenbarger, Sr., 85

James Berton Puffenbarger, Sr., 85, of Harrisonburg, VA, die d Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at his home.  

Mr. Puffenbarger was born Aug. 26, 1919 in Sugar Grove and was a son of the late James P. and Tena F. Simmons Puffenbarger. 

He attended schools in West Virginia and moved to Harrisonburg, VA, in 1971 from Fort Belvoir, VA.  He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired after 20 years and one day.  He was a VFW commander in Mount Clinton, Va.

Mr. Puffenbarger was a member of Beaver Creek church of the Brethren, where he was a deacon.  He was the owner of Layman's Restaurant from 1972-1992. 

Survivors include his wife, Wilda L. Puffenbarger, whom he married Dec. 5, 1974; a son, James B. Puffenbarger, JR., of Harrisonburg, VA; a daughter, Sandra J. Barco of Fayetteville, NC; a brother, Harold J. Puffenbarger of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Shirley R. Eckard of Bridgewater, VA, and Leora F. Grogg of Sugar Grove; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. 

The Revs. Glenn E. Bollinger and John E. Sayre conducted the funeral Dec. 23 at the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.  Burial followed in the church cemetery by Lindsey Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, Va.

Loy Armentrout, 82

Loy C. Armentrout, 82, of Mechanicsburg, PA, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at Health-south Specialty Hospital. 

Mr. Armentrout was born July 17, 1922, in Kline and was a son of the late Charles and Janie Harman Armentrout.  

He retired from the former Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot, where he had worked for 39 years.  He was a member of the Mechanicsburg, Club and American Legion Post 109.  He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the CCC Camp.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley Ours of Dorcas; and two brothers Harmon Armentrout of Baltimore, MD, and Clyde Armentrout of Franklin. 

Also preceding him in death were a sister, Bernice Grace Armentrout, and a brother Roy Dayton Armentrout. 

The funeral was conducted Dec. 29 at Malpezzi Funeral Home in Mechanicsburg, PA.  Burial was in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery.    

Gladys Avenell Raines

Gladys Avenell Raines, 84, of Brandywine died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004 at her home. 

Mrs. Raines was born Dec. 10, 1920, in Ruddle and was the daughter of the late Garnett Daniel Hedrick and Lena Margaret Lambert Hedrick. 

She was a homemaker and retired in 1983 as a cook from the Pendleton County School System after 20 years of service.  She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. 

On Feb. 25, 1939, she married Arlie Raines, who preceded her in death July 29, 2004. 

She is survived by two sons, Harold Raines and wife, Hilda of Brandywine, and Daniel Raines and wife, JoAnn of Harrisonburg, VA; a brother, Luther Hedrick of Franklin; a sister, Alice Vandevender of Elkins; three granddaughters, Teresa Cassell, Jana Cullers and Amy Raines, and two great-grandsons, Jordan Cassell and Dustin Dyer.

She was also preceded in death by two infant daughters and five brothers. 

The Rev. mark James conducted the funeral Dec. 29 at the Kimble Funeral Home in Frnaklin.  Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Ray D. Dove

Ray Dayton Dove, 77, of Petersburg, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Dove was born April 13, 1927, in Riverton, he was the son of the late Robert Dove and Kitty (Teter) Dove. 

He served 24 years in the air force during World War II and the Korean War.  He spent time in Italy, Germany, Japan and the Canal Zone before retiring.  He then worked another 20 years in Civil Service at Washington, D General Hospital as a radiology technician.  After his retirement, he spent his free time doing woodworking and gardening. 

He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge A.F.& A.M. of Massachusetts and was Protestant by faith.   

Survivors include his wife, Regina Turner Dove; a son, Ray Dayton Dove Jr. of Petersburg; three daughters, Mitzi Groves and husband Jim, of Cumberland, MD, Gina Hart and husband Steve, of Richmond, VA and Teresa McLaughlin and husband Bob, of Fairmont; three brothers, Gus Dove of Dover, DE, Worth Dove of San Diego, CA; and Alton Dove of San Demis, CA; five sisters, Lillian Teets of Riverton, Jeanne Bland of Circleville, Molly Tidwell of Decatur, GA, Patricia Dickenson of Olney, NY, and Olive Armentrout of Harrisonburg, VA; four grandchildren, James Brian Groves, Turner Hart, Melissa Curtis and Tara Curtis.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Dick Alden Dove; and two brothers, Bruce "Chip" Dove and Danny Dove.

The Rev. Gary Phillips conducted the funeral  Dec. 23 at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Connie Kimble Warrenfeltz

Mrs. Connie Kimble Warrenfeltz, 49, of Inwood, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at her home.

Mrs. Warrenfeltz was born May 3, 1955, in Petersburg and was the daughter of the late Kermit B. Kimble and Agnes Nelson Kimble.

She graduated from Franklin high School in 1973 and was a data processor for AB&C group in Charles Town.  She attended Brushy Run Church of God.  

On July 19, 2002, she married Walter L. Warrenfeltz, who survives. 

Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robbie D. and Don R. Shanholtz of Harpers Ferry; two sisters, Donna McCormick of Charleston and Paula Peck of Petersburg; three brothers, Larry Kimble, Roger Kimble and William Kimble, all of Charles Town; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral Dec.28 at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Richard Ervin Borror

Richard Ervin Borror, 76, of Landes, died Dec. 26, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Borror was born March 9, 1928, in Landes, he was the son of the late James Borror and Ada Belle Judy Borror. 

He served in the Army from 1946 to 1952, being discharged as a corporal, and retired from General Motors in Baltimore, MD, after 32 years of service.  After retiring, he was cashier for National Lumber Company in Baltimore, MD.  In 1993, he and his wife returned to West Virginia. While living in Baltimore, MD, he was a member of the Dundalk Assembly of God Church, Dundalk, MD, and later was a member of Faith Assembly of god Church in Petersburg, where he was a deacon.  He was a member of the Landes Ruritan Club.  

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, M. Joan Kimble Borror; a son, Gary A. Borror of York, PA; four daughters, Janice Gregson and husband, Charles of Elkton, VA, Diana Landis and husband, David of Canton, Ohio, Brenda Welty and husband Guy Sr., of York, PA, and Tina Coulter and husband Kenneth of Grayslake, IL; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

He was also preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters, Arlie Borror, Rumsey Borror, Edna Riggleman, John Borror, Dora Cosner, Calvin Borror, Ronald Borror and James Earl Borror and two sisters, Edna Riggleman and Dora Cosner.  .

The Revs. Charles E. Lomasney and Robert J. Klier conduted the funeral Dec. 29, at the Schaeffer Funeral Homel, Petersburg.  Burial was at the Judy Cemetery in  Landes with military rites by the combined veterans organizations of Grant County and JROTC and by the Honor Guard from Fort Belvoir.

Mrs. Nellie Warner

Mrs. Nellie Warner, 71, of Circleville, died Dec. 26, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Warner was born April 30, 1933, in Riverton, she was the daughter of the late Walter Warner and Mamie Harper Warner. 

She was a homemaker and a member of the North Fork Baptist church and the O.E.S. Chapter 138 in Franklin. She attended Circleville High School.

On Nov. 19, 1949, she married Ralph J. Warner, who survives.  She is also survived by a daughter, Shirley Lamborne of Circleville;  three sons, Bill Warner and Teddy Warner, both of Circleville, and Glenn Warner of Moorefield; three sisters, Alice Cowger of Franklin, Martha Pitsenbarger of Cleveland and Grace Moody of Riverton; two brothers, Jack Warner of Riverton and Jimmie D. Warner of Onego;  12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother, Harmon Lee Warner.

The Rev. Mark McAllister conducted the funeral Dec. 30 at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Teter Hill Cemetery in Circleville.

Bernard Abel Zickefoose

Bernard Abel Zickefoose, 74, of Cleveland, OH, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at St. John Westshore Hospital in Westlake, OH.

Mr. Zickefoose was born April 21, 1930, in Hunting Ground and was the son of hte late Charles E. Zickefoose and Alice Etta Warner Zickefoose. 

He was a surface grinder at Barth Industries in Cleveland, OH. 

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Bennett Zickefoose; three daughters, Stella Price and husband, Leondas of Elkton, VA, Theresa Curry and husband, Donnie of Durbin, and Barbara Duran and husband, Jerome of Medina, OH; a sister, Emmel Bennett of Circleville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Angela; three brothers, an infant, Kermit and Edsel; and two sisters, an infant and Elva Daniels.  

Paul O'Gorek conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.  

Betty J. Whetzel, 72

Mrs. Betty Jane Cook Whetzel, 72, of Arthur died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, near Maysville, as a result of an automobile accident.

Mrs. Whetzel was born April 10, 1932, in Petersburg and was a daughter of the late Hasper D. Cook and Elizabeth Virginia Mongold Cook VanMeter. 

She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1951.  She was a nurse's aide at Grant Memorial Hospital for several years and was employed at the Petersburg Sewing Factory.  She retired from Grant County Nursing Home as a nurse's aide.  She attended Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Arthur.  

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, E. Wayne Whetzel; a son, E. Wayne Whetzel Jr. of Arthur; seven sisters, Catherine Phares and Elizabeth A. Judy, both of Petersburg, Lucy Mae Calhoun of Upper Tract, Bonnie K. Baldwin of Fisher, Linda Ritchie of Harrisonburg, VA, Sharon J. Crites of Dorcas and Karen J. Whetzel of Moorefield; and two grandchildren, Kaitlyn Whetzel and Zachary Whetzel.

The Rev. Joseph Gerstell conducted the funeral Dec. 26 at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield.

Ronald D. Ketterman, 58

Ronald D. Ketterman, 58, of Riverton died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Grant Memorial Hospital  in Petersburg.  

Mr. Ketterman was born Feb. 25, 1946, in Brushy Run and was the son of the late Glen Ketterman and Velma Lambert Ketterman.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. 

The Rev. Mark McCallister conducted the funeral Dec. 31 at the North Fork Baptist Church in Riverton.  Burial was at the North Fork Memorial Cemetery.

Sadie M. Bowers

Sadie M. Bowers, 96, of Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin and formerly of Highland County, VA, died Monday Jan. 3, 2005. 

Funeral arrangements were pending at press time at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  

Carolyn J. Bennett, 66

Mrs. Carolyn J. Bennett, 66, a resident of Harrisonburg, VA, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, Dec 28, 2004.

She was born on Mach 30, 1938, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was the daughter of the late Jesse Raymond and Kerneda Cleown Morgan Bennett, formerly of Pendleton County. 

Surviving are her only child , Raymond Walter Bennett and his wife, Lori of Harrisonburg, VA; three grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Garber, Kitty Lineweaver and Sandy Wampler, all of Harrisonburg, VA; brothers , "Benny Ray" Jess Raymond Bennett, II, of Bridgewater, VA, and Roger Bennett of Bow, NH; step-mother, Goldie Simmers Bennett of Harrisonburg, VA; and her many nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by cousins, Phyllis Miller and Donna Warlitner, both of Harrisonburg, VA.  

Carolyn was employed at Knights Inn / Motel 6 as a night auditor for the past 17 years.  She previously worked for the federal government in Washington , DC, Dunham-Bush, Glen Shomo Tires and L&S Diner.

A memorial service was held Dec. 30, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA, with the Rev. Clarence M. Moyers officiating.  She was cremated and laid to rest with her parents at Weaver's Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Cletus R. Mitchell, 87

Cletus Richard Mitchell, 87, of Port Republic, VA, died SAturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Rockingham memorial Hospital in harrisonburg, VA. 

Mr. Mitchell was born Sept. 21, 1917, near Kline and was a son of the late charles and Ina Mae Kesner Mitchell.

He was a maintenance engineer at Madison College, now James Madison University, and was a member of the Harrisonburg Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. 

On May 13, 1939, he married the former Esta Hartman, who survives. 

Also surviving are three daughters, Shirley M. Smith of McGaheysville, Va, Frances M. Michael of Harrisonburg, VA, and Connie M. West of Boomer, NC: three brothers, Roy Mitchell of Harrisonburg, VA, Charles Junior Mitchell of Franklin and Stanley Mitchell of Port Republic, VA; two sisters, Leoda M. Grogg of Franklin and Hazel M. Rexrode of Harrisonburg, VA; 11 grandchildren,; one foster granddaughter and 16 great-granddaughter.

Stella M. Popkins, 80

Stella Mae Popkins, 80, of Mathias died Thursday, Dec. 30, 004, in a nursing home in Franklin. 

Mrs. Popkins was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Clarke County, VA, and was the daughter of the late Clifton Longerbeam and Katherine Riley Longerbeam. 

She was a homemaker. 

On March 27, 1945, she married Harry Shepherd Popkins, who survives.  

Also surviving are four sons, Donald Popkins, Preston Popkins and Douglas Popkins, all of Winchester, VA, and Bobby Popkins of Fauquier County, VA; a half brother, Charles Coontz of Winchester, VA; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

The Revs. Ross Halbersma conducted the funeral Monday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home in Berryville, VA.  Burial was at Green Hill Cemetery in Berryville, VA. 

Hoy Vandevander, 78

Hoy Abraham VAndevander, 78, of Franklin died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at his home. 

Mr. Vandevander was born oct. 17, 1926, in Cherry Grove and was the son of the late Edward vandevander and Mary Elizabeth Vandevander. 

he was employed at Mullenax Lumber Mill in Franklin and was a member of the church of the Brethren. 

He is survived by a sister, Theda Warner, and husband Johnny of Fairmont, and several nieces and nephews.  

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Woodrow, Zola, Edward and Brooks Vandevander, and three sisters, Gretchen Vandevander, Cleo Nelson and Loma Bogan. 

The funeral was held Sunday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Dan Ludwick officiating.  Burial was at the Simmons Cemetery in Franklin.
