Charles M. CARPER, born in Monroe county, Virginia, in 1831, came to Lincoln
county in 1871. He is a son of James and Sarah M. (Sarver) Carper, residents of Craig county, Virginia. Charles
Carper first married Catherine Kibert, and two children are the fruit of their union: Ballard P., born June 6,
1854; Oscar W., February 22, 1856. Mrs. Carper died June 6, 1856. In Giles county, Virginia, 1858, Charles M.
Carper was united in wedlock with Mary S. Sarver, and to them nine children have been given, born as follows:
Sarah C., August 19, 1859; Martha J., February 23, 1861; Charles D., August 26, 1862; Paris E., July 11, 1866;
James H., August 5, 1868; Wildea D., July 10, 1870; Bentorm M., March 28, 1873; Medora B., October 21, 1875;
William A., October 23, 1877. Martha J. resides in Boone county, West Virginia. Mrs. Carper was born in Giles
county in 1836, and she is a daughter of Henry and Catherine (Tracy) Sarver, both deceased. C. M. Carper
enlisted in the war between the States, serving in the Confederate army in the 22d Virginia Regiment. He is a
farmer in Jefferson district, owning 370 acres of land, part of which is heavily timbered with oak, poplar,
pine, and walnut. Upon the farm is a fine apple and peach orchard, and mineral, coal and iron ore of excellent
quality are to be found. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in regular standing. His postoffice
address is Spurlockville, Lincoln county, West Virginia.
