COPEN, Sherman Edward

Sherman Edward Copen, 1915 - 1983, Service will be at 1 p.m Friday in Bartlett- Burdett-Cox Funeral Home with the Rev. M.B. "Buss' Melton officiating. Burial will be in Jenkins Cemetery, Rich Fork. Friends my call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Copen 68 of 1918 Preston St., died Tuesday in Kanawha Valley Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was retired from Kaiser Aluminum and was a member of the Old Timers Retirement Club. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving; daughter, Joanne Kastle of Dayton, Ohio; son, Eddie Ramsey of Charleston; sisters, Myrtle Lawhorne and Gertrude Young both of Charleston; cousin, Dorothy Thompson, with whom he made his home; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Impressive Funeral Rites In Honor Of Late Burgess Hundreds Pay Respect At Church And Cemetery F. Lawson Teets, Former California Pastor, Eulogizes Character and Accomplishments In Sermon Masonic Rites Held At Cemetery The entire community suffered a shock last Sunday evening at the news that Burgess Eldridge Mansfield Copenhaver had been overtaken by sudden death. Telephone wires were busy until far into the night as residence of California and vicinity made inquiries in the hope that the sad news might turn out to be an unfounded rumor. It was difficult for people to convince themselves that their esteemed fellow townsman who had been seen on the streets in what was apparently his usual state of health could have passed away. As Burgess Copenhaver died before a physician could be summoned, it is impossible to say what the exact cause of his death. He had complained some during the last two or three weeks about not feeling very well but had been at work every day and been seen about town in the evenings. On Sunday he went to Pittsburgh to see his brother, Hubert, who had been a patient in South Side Hospital for some time. While it was been stated he was not feeling well, those who made the trip with him said that he seemed to be in an unusually good humor. He laughed and joked with his brother and the other members of the party as he seemed to be his usual self. Arriving in California on Sunday evening he complained ---- have been indigestion and -- down on the couch at his home. According to his mother (Grace M. CARSON-COPENHAVER) who was the only person with him at the time he gave one gasp and passed away. Mr. Copenhaver was born April 30, 1887 in Charleston, WVa. and died Sunday, January 18, 1931. That made his age at the time of death 43 years, - months, and -- days. Early in life he was married to Pearl Kiesling --- death, dying three yeas ago last December. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Copenhaver; Harold Ray, Edna Mae, and Paul, and these three survive their father. The son Harold is the eldest and is a student in the California High School. His brother and sister are both younger than he and are grade school pupils. The sympathy of the entire town goes out to the children who were bereft of both parents. Their aged grandmother remains with them. The deceased was in the midst of his second term as Burgess of the Borough of California. He had served his community faithfully and well dealing with intricately difficult problems as he presided with strict justice and fairness during a hard fought coal strike and coped with the ever present problem of law enforcement. It can truthfully be said of him that the best interests of his community were continually uppermost in his mind. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and had been made a Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He was also a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. Hw was also a devout churchman belonging to the First Methodist Episcopal Church. of California where he rendered faithful and efficient service as a member of the Official Board. Funeral services sere held in the First Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The Rev Harry Allan Price was in charge of the service and the music was furnished by the church choir under the direction of Prof. E.E. Halstead. The sermon was preached by the Reverand F. Lawson Teets, a former California Methodist pastor and a close friend of the Copenhaver family. He delivered an eloquent and masterly funeral address which will not be forgotten by those who heard it. He alluded to the distinguished character of the service which the deceased had always rendered to his church and to his community. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in California, the church being crowded to overflowing. There was a Masonic burial service at the grave following the ritual of the church.

COPENHAVER, EMORY H.

Emory Howard Copenhaver, 77, died on September 26, 1960, in Green County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Copenhaver was born Sept, 1883 in Charleston W.Va., a son of the late George B. and Mary Carson Copenhaver. He was a member of the California Methodist Church; Charleroi Lodge 615, F and AM; Pittsburgh and Monongahela Valley Caravan No. 7. He came to California from Dunlevy in 1909 and was a retired employee of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp., Vesta Division. Mr. Copenhaver is survived by a daughter, Miss Constance Copenhaver of California; two sons, George K. Copenhaver of California and Joseph E. Copenhaver of Dillner; a brother Aubrey B. Copenhaver of Richeyville; and two grandchildren.

COPENHAVER, HUBERT LELAND (1881-1973)

Hubert Leland, 91, of 7230 SW 53 Ct., passed away March 20, 1973. He was born Sept 12, 1881 in Copenhaver Mills, Kanawha Co. WV. He had been a resident of Miami here 15 years, coming from California, Washington Co., Pa. He was a retired coal mine foreman. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Harriet C. Norton, Mrs. Helen C. Smith and Mrs. Virginia C. Aber, all of Miami, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be in California, Pa. STANFILL FUNERAL HOMES 10545 S. COPENHAVER, LAWRENCE W.

Lawrence Walter Copenhaver, Coal Center, R. D. Washington Co., Pa, died Sunday, May 16, 1954, at 9:30 a. m. in his home. He was born May 24,1875, at Copenhaver Mills, Kanawha County, W. Va., a son of Floyd an Grace Carson Copenhaver. At the age of 21 he moved to California and worked for 10 years in the mines of that district. He also was employed by the West Penn Power Company, and was street car motorman at one time. In 1913 he started farming near California, operating a dairy farm until 1945 when he retired. He was well known in the California and Coal Center district. Mr. Copenhaver was a member of the California Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the California Rotary Club, director of Howe Cemetery Association, and a former school director of East Pike Run Township. He is survived by the following sons, Clyde, Eugene and Kenneth, of Coal Center, R. D .; Donald, of California; a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Venturi, of Coal Center, R.D.; a nephew, Paul Copenhaver, became part of the family upon the death of his father, Eldrige Copenhaver; a brother, Hubert L. Copenhaver, of California. A son, Clifford, and a brother, Eldrige, are deceased. He also leaves four half-brothers, Thomas, Fred, Grant and Dale Copenhaver, of Charleston, W. Va.; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Neffley, of Charleston. His wife preceded him in death in 1949. EXECUTORS' NOTICE Estate of L. W. Brandon Cesil Corns II, infant son of Brandon Cesil and Rebecca Lynn Corns of St. Albans, died June 8, 1995 at home after a short illness. CORNS, Rev. Everett

The Rev. Everett Corns, 89, of Charleston, died Sept. 29,1990 in General Division, CAMC, after a long illness. He was a retired coal miner and member of Weslyean Church. He pastored Nazarene and Weslyean Churches in West Virginia. He was a veteran of World War I. Surviving; wife, Letty Older Corns, daughters, Charlotte Brown of Charleston, Betty Jane Genter of Cocoa, Fla.; sons, Franklin G. and David both of Richmond, Va., Ronald of St. Albans; sister, Nina Price of Ripley, brother, Cecil of Alum Creek; 11 grandchildren; several great grandchildren. Shello W. Corns, 92, of Charleston died today, May 22, 1998, in Valley Health Village, South Charleston, after a long illness. She was a homemaker and member of Sugar Creek Community Church. Surviving: daughter, Theda Chafin of South Charleston; son, George Corns Jr. of Hope Sound, Fla.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
