The attached list is a partial record of people who were buried in the old Slaughters Creek Cemetery. This cemetery is located on the lower face of the hill, at the western end of Chelyan, Kanawha County and is accessible at the entrance about one quarter mile up "Little Creek". The original list of people who were buried in this old cemetery was found by Mrs. Ellen Calvert while she was in the process of engaging in her unending search for historical data of this and other areas of our State and Nation. Knowing of the interest and action that the Chelyan United Methodist Church had undertaken years before in the cleanup and restoration of this old cemetery, Mrs. Calvert gave her information and findings to Mr. Everette Smith, present chairman of the Church Cemetery Committee. Mr. Smith asked local residents who might be interested in the cemetery to assist in editing the list and in the attempt to add historical data by finding additional names of people buried at this location who were not on the original list. Copies of the original list were distributed to several people who added names that were omitted on the original list. Corrections were also made on any recognized errors in names, spelling, dates, etc. We estimate that the attached list represents about 50 percent of the people who are buried in this old cemetery. Accurate historical data is most difficult and sometimes impossible to find after several generations have passed without any written historical records. So far as we can determine, the first people buried at this cemetery were early settlers and maybe a few slaves and Indians in the (area) around 1850 before the Civil War. Records at the cemetery indicate this cemetery was used extensively by people of this area during the early 1900s from 1900 to 1950. The records indicate that the cemetery was not used much after 1950 because people were beginning to bury their loved ones in perpetual care cemeteries. From the records we have, we believe that the last person buried at the old Slaughters Creek Cemetery was J. D. Ellis, son of Hardie Ellis. He was buried in 1988. We certainly thank all the people that gave their assistance and their cooperation in compiling this list. We apologize to the families and friends of people we have inadvertently omitted, and to those where errors have been made. We tried to make this list as complete and accurate as possible with the limited records and knowledge available. (Signed ) David W. Smith
