WILL OF JOHN SHREWSBURY, SENR

I John Shrewsbury Senr of the County of Kanawha and state of Virginia do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say

1st I give and bequeath to my son Samuel Shrewsbury the following slaves viz Jack and Harriet children of my Negro woman Polly now deceased also the following Negro men slaves, James Anderson and Abraham also my Negro woman Mariah, and her children likewise my Negro boy named Aaron, together with all my stock of horses cattle sheep hogs and all my farming utensils of every description all my household and kitchen furniture also all my funds and all debts due me by bond note or otherwise, with this condition that he shall pay of all just and legal debts that may be against me.

2ndly I give to my daughter Martha Darnell my Negro woman named Ireana - Together with all the salves, I formerly gave her, which slave is in her possession

3dly I give to my grand Daughter Martha Dickinson Shrewsbury daughter of my Daughter Martha Darnell my Negro girl named Marybe

4thy I give my grand son John Shrewsbury Darnell my Negro boy named Jack - son of Negro woman Catherine

5thly I give to my grand daughter Martha Dickinson Shrewsbury daughter of my son John deceased my Negro girl Caroline also my bed and furniture and bed stead

6thly I give to my grand son Joel Shrewsbury son of my son John deceased my Negro boy named Albert

7thly I give to my grand son John Dickinson Shrewsbury son of my son John deceased Negro boy named Norris

8thly I give to Julia B Shrewsbury widow of my son John deceased my Negro boy named Charles

9thly I give and it is my will and desire that my Negro man Ned (slave) shall be hired out or so disposed of in such a way and manner as to have the proceeds of him to be applied to support of my unfortunate grand son Julian son of my son John deceased and in case of the death of Julian said Negro slave Ned or his proceeds to revert to the other heirs of my son John deceased.

Those several bequeaths gifts and … comprehends my estate and as respect my .. estate, I have .. to this time conveyed the same by deeds recorded in the clerk’s of Kanawha County which Deeds of conveyance contains my will and desire as respects my real estate.

Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Samuel Shrewsbury and Joel Shrewsbury Senr Executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and former wills or testaments by my heretofore made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 1st day of June in the year of our Lord 1835.

Inventory and appraisement of the Estate of John Shrewsbury deceased as produced and show to us by Samuel Shrewsbury Executors of said Estate - Being first duly sworn this 21st day of December 1835.

1 Negro man named Jack

1 Negro woman named Harriet

1 Negro boy named Moses (son of Harriet)

1 Negro child Josephine (daughter of Harriet)

1 Negro man named Mearia

1 Negro boy named Henry (son of Mearia)

1 Negro boy named Frank (son of Mearia)

1 Negro boy named John (son of Mearia)

1 Negro child named Catharine (daughter of Meria)

1 Negro man named James

1 Negro man named Anderson

1 Negro boy named Abraham

The above thirteen Negroes are willed to Samuel Shrewsbury.

1 Negro woman Irena willed to Martha Darnell

1 Negro girl Mary willed to Martha D Shrewsbury daughter of Martha Darnell now in her possession

1 Negro boy Jack willed to John Shrewsbury Darnell son of Martha Darnell now in his possession

1 Negro girl named Caroline willed to Martha D Shrewsbury daughter of John Shrewsbury deceased

1 Negro boy Gilbert willed to Joel D Shrewsbury

1 Negro boy named Morris willed to John Shrewsbury

1 Negro man named Charles willed to Julia Shrewsbury

1 Negro boy named Ned willed for the benefit of Julian Shrewsbury an unfortunate child of John D Shrewsbury decd to be hired out or disposed of for the benefit and support of said child

etc.

At a court held for Kanawha County the 8th day of February 1836, the Appraisement of the estate of John Shrewsbury deceased was this day presented in court and admitted to record.
