WILL OF ISAAC REABURN

In the name of God Amen

I Isaac Reaburn of the County of Kanawha and State of Virginia make the following as my last will and testament. To my dear wife Susan (after my just debts are paid) I will all my property consisting of a Negro woman slave names Melissa and girl named Louisa both living in Monroe County Virginia, together with other contingent property there, Also all my property here consisting of one Negro girl named Mary, a horse three head of cattle, my books farming utensils & all other inferior things belonging to me, if I have omitted any thing, which belongs to me I also will it. I wish Matthews Thomas and Moses F Ward to be my executors. My dear wife, the reason I die by my own hand, is that my enemies are mesetating and have been presituation, my your and our children’s eternal infamy and destruction having by their intrigue shamed on being the author of certain slanderous writings, making uncouth pictures, and even of being accessory to stealing and pillfering, which things they say, they can prove by a kind of confession which I made at the house of F. Cobbs, by their asking certain questions, which if they should prove (which I know they would) they would hurl us to inevitable destruction and most black disgrace. Oh, it is horrid to think of the consequences of these things, of which the great god knows I am totally innocent . My dear Susan and my dear children, I a now about to leave you in the hands of a great and good god, who will lead you in the right tract, if you will follow his process Alas, for me, I have deviated from his commands, but feel as though do infinite do being as able and willing to forgive my multitude of crimes. My dear Susan you have been a most affectionate wife to one, vastly more so than I deserves, my dear wife I crave of you as my most earnest desire, that you endeavor with all the abilities that in you lie, to raise our dear children in the nature and aomsontion of the Lord. I you can, give them a decent education and teach them to keep decent company. If you should find it your convenience to marry it is my most solemn advice to you, to choose a man of sober habits, and that is industrious and fugal, not fond of bad lewd company. I should like write much more to you but volumes would not contain the wishes so I bid you a long, long farewell. O prepare yourself to meet me in Heaven where I hope to go, written by my own hand in the year of the Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three on the thirteenth day of August and sealed my own seal in presence of name prater optimum it manimum deum.
