WILL OF ALEXANDER QUARRIER

At a court held for Kanawha County at the Court house thereof on Monday the 10th day of September, 1827.

A writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Alexander Quarrier decd was this day produced in court by Alexander W. Quarrier, Monroe Quarrier, and James Y. Quarrier, the executors therein named and proved by the oaths of G. B. Quarrier, Archibald A. Quarrier, and Alexander T Laidley subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said executors who made oath thereto (no surety being required of the by the said will) certificate was granted the for obtaining a probate of the said Will in due form: and is ordered that Benjamin H. Smith, James Hogue, Mason Campbell and John P Turner or any three of them do appraise the personal estate and slaves (if any) of said decedent and make before thereof to the court at a future term.

In the name of God Amen, I Alexander Quarrier of the County of Kanawha in the Commonwealth of Virginia being now of sound mind do make and ordain that my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

First, I desire that at my decease my body be decently interned at the discretion of my executors and my spirit I resign to God who gave it.

Second, I direct that all my just debts be paid by my executors and if possible that they be paid in the manner hereinafter prescribed, wishing that the whole of my personal property should remain as it is now and disposed of as is hereinafter mentioned.

Third, I direct my Executors shall sell or dispose of all my lands either lying and being in this State and County or in any other State in the United States (Except such as are hereinafter reserved leaving it to their sound discretion either to sell immediately for ready money or to lease the same or to make contracts with other persons for the selling or leasing of the same and out of the first monies arising from such sale or lease, I request and desire that my just debts be paid and the remainder be divided in this manner, first an equal share to my wife and an equal share to each and every of my children now living. And I do exhort my said executors to be diligent in establishing my title to said lands believing that many of them are of considerable value.

Fourth, I desire that my property opposite the Town of Charleston remain in its present situation and I give to my beloved wife Sarah the whole of said property including land, my Slaves Judy, Julia and her six children together with her future increase, and all my personal property of whatsoever description to be by her used to her exclusive benefit during her said natural life (not how ever wishing her to sell any of said Slaves) And at her death request that all of my said property shall be equally divided amongst my said children or their heirs and I direct my executors to make such distribution of my said Slaves after the decease of my wife as to avoid if possible the sale of any or either them out of my family. My executors may at their discretion after the decease of my wife sell the land on which I now live, so as to make an equal distribution of the profit amongst my children.

And Lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my sons Alexander W. Quarrier, Monroe Quarrier, and James Y. Quarrier, Executors of this my last Will and testament, requesting the Court to permit them to qualify, and to obtain certificate of probate of this my last Will and Testament without granting any security for the same. Given under my hand and seal this 4th day of March in the Year 1827.
