1780s Documents

Sample 1780s Documents

Hampshire County researcher Jim Hall found these documents on his ancestors and shared them as an example of the type of documents one might find. He has also kindly added a transcription for comparison.

They're rather large files, so please be patient while they load.

The first is a tax receipt dated 1780, issued to Stephen Viney by Deputy Sheriff John Prunty. Prunty moved to Harrison County when it was formed in 1784 and served as justice-of-the-peace, later sheriff and represented Harrison county for twenty years in the VA legislature. (Use the BACK key on your browser to return to this page.)

The second is a claim Benjaman Rounsoval made against the estate of Andrew Viney, dec'd, dated 1783 and is signed by Sheriff Stephen Ruddell. (Use the BACK key on your browser to return to this page.) Ruddell came to Hampshire County about 1761 and left for KY about 1784. In 1780, he posted bond when he was appointed sheriff.

If you have an interest in either Prunty or Ruddell, please contact Jim at the address given above.

Thanks for thinking of the Hampshire County GenWeb, Jim!
