The Hampshire County Public Library

The County Library is in Romney The library is part of the West Virginia ed.net and has computerized access to other library catalogs across the state.

The Library is also home to the Genealogy Room. Along with standard reference materials for the county, this Room houses many individual family files in a vertical file, a number of limited edition, often typewritten, family histories and genealogies.

The library accepts queries by snail-mail, accompanied by an SASE. Copies are currently fifteen-cents a page. Donations of funds or material are gratefully received.

The Address is: Genealogy Room, Hampshire Co. Public Library, 153 W Main St, Romney, WV 26757. Telephone # 304-822-3185, but the genealogist is a volunteer who works irregular hours based on other commitments. Please submit queries by only one media, as they are handled in the order received (FIFO) and two queries will get two answers from possibly different volunteers.

Among the many families represented in their vertical files are:

Capon Bridge Library

There is a second library in the County, in Capon Bridge. They too have vertical files and information that might be helpful in your genealogy search for that part of the County. I had their hours, but have misplaced them during one of my illnesses.

You may search Frederick County (the parent county) via Handley Library's catalog. Should you leave a query at Handley, please include your snail-mail address. It is quite often easier for the staff to make a copy of a single page and drop it in the mail than to retype the information for you. Additionally, they ask that you NOT submit queries by more than one media .. the volunteer who takes the FAX request may not be aware that another volunteer starting working on your e-mail request yesterday, and neither will know that there is a letter awaiting action on the Archivist's desk. There is, of course, a charge for copies, and donations are well-received.

Miscellaneous

A visitor has sent in some tidbits from the 1880 census. These mostly concern Smith and Harris families in the county. This is a wonderful addition, and I am very grateful for the submission!
