- I have an old autograph book that belonged to my Great Grandmother, Mattie B.
Black Bosley, wife of Lindsay Bosely. It is dated from 1881-1888. A lot of
beautiful writing and signatures. I am not sure where she was from so I do
not know if all the people listed were from Braxton Co. It has been really
interesting to read all the messages.

- The 4th miner from the left is Wesley VARNEY. The photo was
undated, although it mentioned it was taken at Widen, WV. I was in contact
with Art Friend of Braxton County's rootweb operation some time back and he
said of the photo " The Widen coal operation for years was owned and
operated by the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company. Around or about 1958
the company was sold to the Clinchfield Coal Company. Clinchfield
officially closed their operations at Widen on December 31, 1962. These
dates were given to me by someone who should be rather accurate with their
information. Since 1962 small operators have started mining operations in
Widen from time to time. Whether there is any mining going on there now, I couldn't

- The Strange Creek photo original had written on the back:
"Taken on the headwater of Strange Creek, W. Va. in Braxton County, July 4,
1901." My great grandfather, William Yular Varney, is the 7th from the left
and the one with the "X" over his head. My great uncle, Arnold Varney, told
me at the time that William's uncles Elliott Cart and Smith Hanshaw were
also in the photo, but he couldn't identify them.submitted by: Linda Newman.
- Here is the large group photo with Levi Cart in Civil War
uniform. It's been awhile since I looked at the photo and I had more
information that original thought. I would still be interested in learning of the occasion for such a photo. My uncle's reasoning for Levi wearing
his CW uniform some 50 years hence was that folks were so poor that
wearing your CW uniform would be like wearing your "Sunday best."
